Title: Enabling the Collaborative Advantage in Enterprise

Abstract: Understand how Unified Communication & Collaboration, normally the topic of mobile/voice operators, can deliver advantage into the Enterprise network. The benefits of collaborative video and audio applications are enabling fast cost effective responses in the remote diagnostics of situations ranging from emergency response to off shore petrochemical engineering diagnostics.

Hear examples of deployment considerations and management of theses services are discussed.

Definition & Understanding of Communication in Enterprise

Communication

• Connection – via any network type, LAN, WAN,Wireless, etc into one seamless dynamic transport network.

• Delivering information to those that need it

• Information available from any location

• Interconnection – High Performance solutions for voice video and data applications with full duplex capability.

Communication defines access to information, resource, SME over any technology transport network between any end point (people/information/data/etc) or multiples of in real time. Reliable mobile secure, high performance and efficient connectivity through various network technologies need to be guaranteed and measured.

Collaboration

• Collusion – subject matter experts ability to offer advice remotely allowing educated responses to critical situations

• Cooperation – Allowing Vendors and experts to work together to problem resolution as opposed to blame.

• Context – availability of real time accurate information

• Teamwork – Everyone necessary can participate to ensure opinions and judgements can be made and agreed to conclude situations quickly and efficiently

Security Note; - cooperation is always positive, collaboration is positive except in wartime (working with the enemy), and collusion is always negative (working together in secret for a dishonest purpose)

Collaboration Issues Applications Must Resolve

video – loss of pointing gestures, body language, etc

audio – loss of facial acknowledgments

half duplex – lose most voice responses

text based – 2 Dimensional and poor context

Applications must translate the context of communication into electronic media …

It does so but … sometimes with disastrous results

Miss-interpretations can be viewed as rudeness of colleague

Personal space– video may destroy mutual impression of distance

The Human Consideration

Definition & Understanding of Unification in Enterprise

Unification

• Collective decisions can be made as to problem resolution in real time saving cost and improving overall efficiency

• Combined knowledge sharing with SME and others

• Converged use of any technology transport/end point or other with any defined application without unique configurations for each application or requirement

• Incorporated security and performance monitoring to ensure all information is delivered accurately and safely

Communications defines speed and availability of access over converged network technologies whilst the collaboration defines the context whereby the accuracy and quality of the content/data delivered is upheld. Unifying these into a converged solution can have tremendous effects on business efficiency.

Goals & Benefits of UCC

Turning the goals into the benefits:

• Increase productivity and efficiency

• Make it easier & faster to communicate with vast shared knowledgebase internally or externally.

• The ability to collaborate effectively regardless of their location

• Drive cost reductions in Travel, voice calls and high, time to resolve problems and Subject Matter Expertise availability

• Improve health & safety

• Ensure UCC adoption in line with your business goals

• Reduce your carbon footprint

Understanding Communication Properly

Today Computers communicate with a common language over IP allowing single user, multi-user and workgroup environments over networks remotely.

We must not forget the normal human-human communication which is often lost in 2 dimensional text communications such as email, SMS and other collaborative tools.

Face-to-face communication involves eyes, face and body allowing conversations to be analysed, better understanding its its detailed structure.

Some Advantages and disadvantages here;Text-based conversation has reduced feedback for confirmation, less context and a slow interaction and ability to challenge. However it is easily reviewed.

Subject Matter Expertise Made Available

Engineers can relay live information back from remote sites.

Resolve complex repair issues

Remote inspections

Visually report part number/serial numbers

Live video streams with duplex voice to Subject Matter Experts for expert advice in real time

Applications have to overcome the context lost by the on site face-to-face experience – Such as the ability to point to something -

Petro-Chemical Environment

• Ability to share live information in vastly remote locations

• Available SME’s from any location instantly

• Shared decision making in critical situations

• Use of Wireless end point technology to reach root of problem

• Fast educated cost effective resolution

• Reducing time to assess and fix

• Earlier release of any replaceable component

• Identify additional resource expertise requirements accurately

• Reduce Health, Safety & Environmental risks

• Reduce carbon footprint

Key Elements of Delivering UCC – CARE-NET

Communication Security• Protection of data and voice

communications between designated endpoints.

Authorisation & Access Control• Support of multi-level security measures

by implementing identity or role based access control on applications, application server, 802.1x etc

Reliability & Resilience• Tolerance to hardware and software

failures, asymmetric and unidirectional links, or limited range of wireless communication

Easy• Deploying technology should not impact

usability in a way that is intolerable

Network Infrastructure Protection• Protection of routing and network

management infrastructure against both passive and active attacks, such as rogue devices, insertion, deletion, modification or replay of control messages,

Efficiency• Electrical, computing power, RF resource

and network bandwidth

Transmission Security• The services include countermeasures

against radio signal detection, jamming, control/user data acquisition, and eavesdropping
