A NOTE FROM OUR CEO CHRIS STENBERG
SAFETY AROUND WATER
Dear YMCA Friends,
As your new CEO, I must start by saying thank you! The support and dedication of our staff,
board of directors, members and partners are what positions this YMCA as a meaningful and
relevant member of our community. Wonderful things are happening each and every day here at
the Y.
2017 was another year of change for us. Our good friend and dedicated CEO Jackie Minor began
a new chapter in her life. We wish her the best of luck and enjoyment in her retirement, and will
forever be grateful for her friendship, contributions, and dedicated service of 30 years to our Y.
The positive momentum and value added improvements continue into 2018. As we carry out our
work in YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, HEALTHY LIVING, and SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY we celebrate our
accomplishments in 2017 of a newly renovated Rec Pool, FREE land fitness class offerings,
record participation numbers in aquatics, vibrant child care program, successful NDPP (National
Diabetes Prevention Program), newly remodeled fitness center, and growth in Youth Sports. In October, YMCA Nationwide
Membership was rolled out, an unprecedented value added service for our members. You may now enjoy free use of any
participating Ys in your travels.
As your CEO, I view each and every day here as an opportunity. This Y is a shining example that there are great people working
together to strengthen our community. Each day I take enjoyment from seeing members of all ages and walks of life enjoy our
facilities and programs. For that I am grateful. Whatever it may be that brings you to the Y, I hope you can share that same
enjoyment in witnessing members of our community working together to become happier and healthier individuals and families,
ultimately strengthening the ties of our community.
Thank you,
Chris Stenberg

ANNUAL SUPPORT & SCHOLARSHIPS
Every day, the Superior Douglas County Family YMCA gives our
community the support it needs to learn, grow, and thrive. From
childcare to aquatics, disease prevention to athletics, everything
we do helps strengthen our neighborhood and the people who
live here.
Keeping Superior great is a full-time job. Every day, our
community faces new challenges that create a greater need for
the work we do. And we need your help to do it. Your gift can
help Superior and everyone in it shine.
The Annual Support Campaign is crucial to our YMCA. In 2016,
we gave out over $85,000 in scholarships. The money raised &
donated sent kids to camp, helped children learn to swim, gave
adults with special needs or seniors on fixed incomes a place to
become healthier while making new friends. Families get the
opportunity to work toward better health in spirit, mind and
body through YMCA memberships and programs. Every dollar
raised goes right back into our community.
The Y. For a better us.
To learn more about giving to the Y, visit our website
www.superioymca.org, give us a call at 715-392-5611 or stop
in today.
At the Y we have something special. We have a sense of
community and believe everyone should have access to it, along
with the programs and services that help us learn, grow and
strive.
If you would like to belong to the Y or participate in programs,
but cannot afford the full cost you may apply for financial
assistance.
Financial aid applications are available online at
superiorymca.org or at Northwest Community Services.
Applications must be completed and returned to Northwest
Community Services. Applications will be reviewed and you will
be notified by mail. For further information contact Membership
Coordinator Michelle Starry at [email protected] or
call 715-392-5611.
At the Y, we’re more than a gym, we’re a community! Here you are part of something bigger than yourself. A volunteer is
anyone who preforms a task at the direction and on the behalf of the Y without compensation or special member
discounts. Y volunteers have fun, meet new people and make a difference.
There are dozens of volunteer opportunities available here at the Y. No matter what your special talents, interests and
schedule, you can help change someone’s life. So if you share our commitment to helping our friends and neighbors in
our community, please consider becoming a Y volunteer.
For more information on volunteer opportunities contact Michelle Starry [email protected],

SWIM LESSON OVERVIEW
YOUTH SWIM LESSONS
Let our trained swim instructors teach your child how to swim! Our
instructors follow standardized lesson plans developed by Y-USA to
teach children to swim using a natural progression through easy-to
-follow benchmark skills. Students ages three and up are taught
swim basics without the use of wearable flotation aids. This
approach teaches children to control their body in the water faster,
while maintaining an awareness of their own limitations. While your
children explore their swim abilities, they will be closely monitored
by their swim instructor. Beginner levels have no more than four
students per instructor, and you will always see at least one
lifeguard on deck, vigilantly scanning your child’s swim lessons! In
order to maintain our Instructor/Student ratios, missed lessons
cannot be made up during another day or time.

Water provides the ideal environment for exercise. The natural buoyancy of water reduces weight bearing stress, allowing
greater ease of movement with less impact on joints and muscles. The increased density of water creates even and fluid
resistance; toning and strengthening muscles with greater balance and efficiency. Whatever your level of physical activity,
water exercise is an excellent way to improve fitness and maintain health at any age!
