Credit Unions are great places to save your money. They are not-for-proft member-owned; money goes back to your, not to shareholders. That’s the credit union difference.

Watch Your Money GrowDo you know your regular allowance, gift money, or money you earn for jobs you do can make more money? When you put your money in a credit union savings account, it’s called INVESTING.

The credit union then pays you for letting it use your money to give loans to other people. So, how does your money grow in a savings account?

The first time you invest, you will be paid a dividend on just the amount

you put in your account. The next time your account pays a dividend, you’ll be paid on the money you put in your account, plus on the money you’ve already earned in interest. That’s called COMPOUND INTEREST.

So, you see, if you promise yourself to put a bit of money into your savings account every week (and don’t take it out!), you’ll watch it grow so fast you’ll soon have enough to pay for something really special, like a trip or a bike!

Math: Common Denominator for Saving Money

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUTH MEMBERS

Most kids think math isn’t very useful in everyday life. With smartphones and computers in the palms of their hands, kids think they won’t use math once they finish school. You can use math in your everyday life to save money. Most people use math without knowing it, although some people don’t use it as often as they should, and miss many money-saving opportunities. There are other ways to save money with math. Another example is to compare prices

with different unit costs. The most common way unit prices are important is when you’re buying large quantities of things. It can get tricky to know which is better just by looking at it.Using math also can help develop savings and spending plans. For example, if you want to buy a Nintendo Switch, which costs roughly $400, you can figure out how much allowance money to save per week or month.Doing the math helps you set realistic goals for saving.

If you’re an up and coming sophomore, junior or senior and want to add something unique to your resume or college application, RFCU has a fun and special opportunity for you.

“The things that I learned in those four days are more important than anything I have learned in the past 17 years.”

--Kyle B., Past Participant
