Proud to Be Certified as the First “Clean Marina” on the St. Croix River
E-Mariner
Winter Wind
With a chunk of ice the size of Rhode Island, it made quick
work of the end of C Dock. The mass at fault, broke free in
the overnight hours and did the damage before the sun came
up. It’s not something that we can’t fix, but it does show us
the power of wind and ice in the spring. It will be like new in
no time. The crew has everything ready to go.
At least we don’t have to worry about floods, right? Right?

EVEN KEEL April 2016
After a mild winter....the transition into Spring is not following suit. The St. Croix is totally open. Folks are
starting to get ready for the launching season, including me.
Financials: The books won't be finalized until our auditors go over them to be ready for the Annual Meeting.
But right now it looks like we are going to come in at about $33,000 over the 2015 forecast. Our operating
and capital reserves are healthy. We have got about $70,000 more for capital investments than were not in
the budget we put together last fall. These are for pending improvements for technology and widening A
dock to accommodate our rental visitors. Both pending because we need to know what the latest updates ac-
complished and the dock issue needing government approval.
Shower Trailer: The improvements on the inside are close to being finished. The new roof will be ap-
proached as soon as our contractor has good weather to get it done.
Ship Store: The new goodies are coming in for the new season and Sarah is excited to show them for you.
Launch Keys: Those of us who need them need to get new ones. The old ones will not work.... we change
them yearly for security issues.
Security Guard: Jeff is looking for a new one. The word is out...so we'll be looking at candidates.
E Dock Ramp: We have a request to lower the pitch of this ramp from the point to the dock. This is to
make wheel chair access more safe. The point is the highest level in the marina. Hogie is working on this
one.
Elections: The Director positions for C and D, Dock, and At Large, are up for election. These are two year
terms. Elaine Nordness is in charge of elections. If you are interested you can contact her at
([email protected]). For C and D docks you must be the owner of a slip on the respective
docks. For At Large you have to be an owner...but you can reside on any dock in the Marina.
Next Meeting: Is our annual meeting which will be held in the club room, at 9:30AM, Saturday May 14 th.
Have needs? Check in with our friendly staff. They are always ready to help. Until next time. “Boat Friendly”

Annual Meeting!!!!!!!!
No Statistic Too Obscure for Jim
Please put Saturday, May 14th on
your must do list this spring. It’s our
annual member meeting where all
good things happen. Hear the latest
financial information, vote for dock
representatives, and see a Packer/
Viking slide or two. Seriously, this is
our big meeting where we can talk
about everything that’s happening in
and around the marina. We look over
last year, look ahead to the near fu-
ture, and bring up any pertinent is-
sues that might impact you or the
slip. This is the time dock represent-
atives are elected as well. If you are
interested in running, let us know.
The Bios attached are for our incum-
bents. We kick things off around
9:00 a.m. with coffee and donuts and
the meeting starts promptly at 9:30.
Meeting materials will be sent out in
late April and should have all the in-
formation you need. Mark the date,
please. Saturday, May 14th...

Spring has sprung!! Well… Almost. It may not look like it OR feel like it outside but
things are beginning to really buzz here in the office. Boating is on the brain once more and we
have fresh merchandise arriving, slips being rented, launch & insurance paperwork coming in left
and right (keep them coming!!!!) and a newly renovated gas dock to be merchandised (thank you
Geno and Hogie)! Those are some of the projects that are on my front burner as of lately. I have
also been busy getting to know our new neighbors at the Black Oar; if you haven’t heard of them
already I highly encourage you to check them out! The owner, Alex Linnell, was the first person
to standup paddleboard the entire Mississippi River, so it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two
about this latest and greatest craze. The Black Oar specializes in everything standup paddleboards
(SUP). They offer try before you buy demos on all boards and carry 99.9% local brands- can
somebody say awesome?? From simply answering questions, to renting boards, to getting you set
up with your very own paddleboard and paddle that is the perfect fit for you, they are the experts!
In addition to specializing in paddleboards, The Black Oar also offers season passes on paddle-
board rentals as well as rentals on kayaks and fat tire bikes. Definitely worth taking a look at when
you start finding yourselves back at the waterfront and looking for new ways to be out on the wa-
ter! They are located directly next door to us, you can’t miss them!! Check out the website for
more info or stop in when it starts warming up- you’ll be glad you did!!
http:www.theblackoar.com/
P.S. To all slip lessors and lessees- I am still waiting on slip rental contracts to be turned in. Even
if you have already paid we still need a contract!! If you need another copy I would be happy to
do provide you with one- call, or email, or stop in! Sarah
So Much Information, So Little Space
1. Launch is starting…..But the weather has not helped…..22 degrees to-
night! Not good for a summerized boat!!!!! We are pushing things and
will start as soon as we can. Realistically, we are a week late until
further notice.
2. Water should be on next week!
3. If you want to use the launch ramp, you will need a new key. Old
keys will not work. Go ahead….try it.
4. Trailers over 20’ must be removed by June 1
5. No Cash, No Splash!! And not to be crass, but we need your loot or
your launch becomes moot. So pay those bills to experience river
thrills! Cuz we’re not putting you in the drink if you’re not in the pink.
6. Stupid rhyming phrases hereby outlawed.

Bob Carlson, At Large
My family moved to the St. Croix Valley in 1957 when I was about 13. We lived in Lakeland just a few
blocks off of the St. Croix River. I can't remember ever not having a boat....my father would build them
with wood from scratch....later wood with fiberglass overlay. The St. Croix was the main sewer for the
whole valley....not a single waste water treatment plant anywhere. All the big boats dumped in the St.
Croix. Beer and soft drinks switched from bottles to cans....the used ones were everywhere. “Beer Can
Island” as myself and all my friends referred to it was literally covered with them. I worked for
“Beanie” (Jr.) my first summer out of high schools as a commercial fisherman out of Lakeland. We
would net about 6000 lbs of rough fish out of the river each morning. Most people can't believe the
size of some of the fish in this river....some heavier than me (in those days). I've seen a lot of changes
in the river...almost all for the better.
My wife (Midge) and I are residents of Hudson. We have four children and six grand children, all liv-
ing within minutes of us in the valley. We have been in the Marina since 1994, starting on E-Dock, then
moving to D-Dock where we bought our slip in 1995. We’ve been there ever since. We’ve seen a lot
of changes in our marina, all for the better, and have benefitted by the skillful handling by the board (s)
of directors who have unselfishly volunteered their time. I've now been on our board of directors for six
years as “Director at Large”, representing all member/owners of our Marina. During that time I've held
the office of Vice-President, President, and additionally acted as the “liaison of our board to the Marina
Manager”. Also during that time I chaired the “Nominations Committee” several times. As I did earli-
er, it is still felt that it is my turn, and my obligation to remain on our board and volunteer my efforts in
serving in the same manner as those before me.
Both my wife and I are retired from 3M. My career spanned a little over forty years, all in the Chemical
Group of 3M. I’m a chemist by training and spent twenty years in analytical (evaluating incoming and
outgoing chemical products), research (building new chemical molecules and products), and technical
service ( teaching our customers around the world how to use our chemical products). The last twenty
years of my service at 3M was spent on the business side, most of it as a global business manager.( At
3M all business functions, financial, product development, marketing, sales, technical service, and man-
ufacturing report into the business manager function of the business unit.) I necessarily traveled the
globe. And while very taxing on ones personal time, the interaction with people from different coun-
tries and cultures and learning about their cares, wants, and needs was fascinating. It cements ones ap-
preciation for the space, beauty, and personal freedom we have here in the USA, and crystallizes why
these virtues need to be protected.
My experiences in committee work include those in the American Chemical Society, the Society of Au-
tomotive Engineers, and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. All in support of my work
for 3M. Within 3M I was a member of our Department/Divisional Operating Committee and Manage-
ment Committee.
Besides boating, my hobbies are wood working (fine furniture) and I am a natural mechanical “gear
head”. My strengths are in dealing with strategic and operational issues, and I enjoy working with peo-
ple.

Jim McCormick: D Dock
I have volunteered my services on the Board for 14 years now and have been the Treasurer during much of that
time. During my tenure, our slips have become significant financial assets for every one of us. That has resulted in an increased emphasis by our membership on our financial stability. We now manage the financial affairs of
our association as a business rather than a club. Our financial reporting is now considerably more sophisticated
and accurate. Our financial communications to you as members have become more transparent and forward looking.
We are investment partners and co-owners in a wonderful business association having a value of 20 million dol-lars, a testimonial to your loyalty and commitment. However, we are also co-owners of a seasonal business that
is in a highly competitive recreational industry and is also real estate based. Consequently, we need to keep our
eyes on the ball, given our nation’s current economic conditions. At the same time we want to have fun as boat-
ers and we should feel good about the financial growth that we have collectively achieved. I am volunteering my time and services for the next two years in anticipation that our membership will continue our positive trend
line.
My wife, Melinda, and I have raised our family on the St. Croix River and we cherish the marina and beautiful
river at the same time. In my “real life”, I was an attorney and a C.P.A. and Senior Partner at Deloitte, the
world’s largest accounting and consulting firm. Now retired, and whenever possible, we make a bee-line for the
marina and we relax on the boat and in the marina. Baseball and hockey take up some time (as a spectator sport) and there’s no better place to watch a game than on the boat….unless you’re at the ballpark or in the arena.
Elaine Nordness, C Dock
My name is Elaine Nordness. My boat is Happenstance, slip CN14. We have been in the Marina for
about 22 years. For approximately 7 of those years we were in the process of restoring Happenstance.
We spent some of that time in the parking lot under the big white tent. Hence the nick name “The Park-
ing Lot People”.
Our first experience on the river was on a 23 foot boat. We launched at the Camden bridge in Minneap-
olis and boated to Stillwater and back in one day on several occasions. Then we got the boat bug. There-
fore a 48’ wood Chris, Happenstance.
Gary and I were married for 46 years and have four children and 10 grand children. They love the boat
and two of my sons Don and Jeff are now the captains.
Gary, Jeff and I started a commercial real estate Business (Essence Real Estate Services, Inc.) in 1990.
We have real estate broker’s licenses in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Jeff and I sell, lease, and develop
commercial property in the Metro Area.
I am very appreciative of conservative, stable condition of the Marina. Also, the friendly atmosphere
makes it a perfect environment to relax and enjoy the river. The staff is always there to help with what-
ever we need. They are outstanding.
I would be happy to serve on the board to continue seeing the Marina prosper and grow.

Inspection Time
If you haven’t noticed, we lift a lot
of boats around here! Like 600 plus
per year. So the complete(and very
in-depth) inspection we do every
other year (even numbered years to
make it easy to remember) was com-
pleted this morning. It’s a several
hour process spearheaded by the
manufacturer, Marine TraveLift,
Inc. out of Sturgeon Bay, WI. We
always coordinate with other mari-
nas to keep our costs down and it is
always nice to know things are oper-
ating as they should, and safely of
course. That’s always key.
This year, Hogie and Geno also com-
pleted the Operator’s Training ses-
sion and received their recertifica-
tion in the process. Even the in-
structors agreed that our guys are
the best in the biz, having moved
thousands of boats over the years.
I’d venture to say that either Geno
or Hogie could teach the teachers a
thing or two. In fact, I guarantee it.
