● With mid-term elections fast approaching, this month’s meeting will be a presentation by Rick Saccone, the Re-publican candidate vying to defeat incum-bent Dave Levdansky in the race for State Representative in the 39th Legislative Dis-trict. With Saccone having spent a career in USAF as a Counterintelligence Officer and serving as a civilian advisor in Iraq, it should be interesting to hear and discuss his opinions on firearms legislation, the deer management program, and other sensitive issues. ● Remember, there is a work party on September 18, as well as a Mon-Valley Friends of NRA banquet at 6:00 in the Valley Inn Social Hall on Snyder Road in Monongahela.

DUES NEWS At the last board meeting, the directors reviewed the trend of the cost of our operating expenses. As with most segments of the economy, the cost to the club for utilities, in-surance, etc. has risen steadily. As a result, after holding the line on membership dues for the past few years, the directors voted to increase dues by $5.00 a year in all membership categories, effective January 1, 2011. The increases are shown below.

To ease the transition, the directors also voted to let members who renew their mem-bership for next year by December 31, 2010, pay at the old rates instead of the new, increased rates.

The shooters agreed the practice match at the club was valuable in getting them ready for the barely audible commands on the Perry firing line. Bruce Long gave his first-time shooter’s perspective that summed up the experi-ence -- from the 5:30 AM mosquitoes to realizing you’re surrounded by and shoot-ing among the best civilian and military marksmen in the world. ● Also on tap is the September 19 John Garand Memorial M1 Rifle Match. ● Dan Campbell reports PA Republican Policy Committee conducted a town meet-ing in New Stanton to hear feedback on its proposal to eliminate the PA Instant Check (PICS) for firearms purchases and rely solely on the Federal program (NICS). This move would not only save redundant costs but also eliminate the need for the PA State Police recordkeeping system. ● In answer to some inquiries, dog train-ing is limited to two areas--the grassy ex-panses behind the mainframe archery tar-get and the meadow-like lower area along the creek before you get to the plinking range. Dogs must be leashed unless run-ning free as part of the training regimen when they are under control of the han-dler. ● To close out the season, there’s a new match in town. Al Jaworski is organizing a Combat Rifle Match for November 13. This should be a fun match. Details are in the web edition of the newsletter.

RIFLE CIVILIAN MARKSMANSHIP PRO-GRAM. This outdoor program shoots the third Sunday of the month. The firing be-gins at 11:00AM. First time shooters need to have a safety orientation at 9:00AM. Program began its 6 week class Septem-ber 14.basics for new shooters. Addi-tional coaching and practice is available every Tuesday night through March after the 6 week class concludes. MEETING NOTES FROM THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY SPORTSMEN’S LEAGUE AND THE WASHINGTON COUNTY SPORTSMEN’S AND CONSERVATION LEAGUE (Delegates Mike Yanchak and Bob Kirsopp)

HERE’S LOOKIN’ AT YOU, BABE!

Ernie Elk is one of the four 3-D targets set up on the lower archery range for archery season prac-tice. The area has been up set up with a gated perimeter guard rail but is still handicap-accessible.

The yard markers for the upper target ranges have been repainted. Target 6, on the ridge, has been refurbished after the sanitary line cut through and is ready for use. The slight slopes on both sides of the cut will be stepped for easier access. If you use the Target 2 tree stand, you can use your harness. That facet of hunting also needs to be practiced.

THE 2010 JUNIOR RIFLE PROGRAM IS UP AND RUNNING

Whether you call it Junior Rifle or Basic rifle Training for Juniors and Adults, the program began September 14th. There is room for late signups for this 6 week in-structional class emphasizing safety and marksmanship basics for new shooters. Additional coaching & practice available every Tuesday night through March after the 6 week class concludes. There is a charge of $10 (TOTAL) for the 6 week class. That cost includes instruction book, ammo, and all needed equipment. After the 6 week class concludes there is a charge of $3 per week for ammo and tar-gets. FISH AND BOAT COMMISSION The PFBC has begun drawing down three lakes in Southwest Pennsylvania, The three lakes are High Point Lake and; Lake Somerset, located in Somerset County; and Virgin Run Dam in Fayette County. The drawdown will continue until March 2011. Fall trout stockings are underway. Some nearby stocking will occur through Octo-ber in counties and waters below Allegheny: Montour Run 10/4, Pine Creek 10/5 Beaver: Raccoon Lake 10/5 Lawrence: Neshannock Creek and Slip-pery Rock Creek 10/5 Somerset: Laurel Hill Creek 10/6 Washington: Little Chartiers Creek 10/4, Canonsburg Lake and Dutch Fork 10/5 Westmoreland: Keystone Lake and Loyalhanna Creek 10/6 Executive Director John Arway recently offered the Commission’s perspective on the current and potential impacts of Mar-cellus development to aquatic resources, fishing and boating. Most people do not realize that the Commission relies almost entirely on fishing licenses, boat registra-tions, and federal funding tied to fishing and boating to pay for everything it does. Arway noted, “If we received a portion of a severance tax, we could take a collabo-rative approach with both the industry and the other agencies that are reviewing and advising on projects. Ultimately, we would like to have Commission staff in position to spend the necessary time re-viewing and commenting on projects, working in the field with developers and other agencies and enforcing the water pollution laws of the Commonwealth to make sure our resources are protected. I

truly believe that the public expect that service from us, and the resources under our jurisdiction depend upon it to sur-vive.” GAME COMMISSION PGC awarded 50 elk licenses for the 2010 season. All 50 hunters selected to receive a license will be mailed a confir-mation letter within about a week. Of the 17 antlered elk licenses, PA residents got 14. Of the 33 antlerless licenses, 32 went to Pennsylvanians. Preference points played a big role in the results. For in-stance, 14 of the individuals had eight and 10 had seven. In addition to the 50 licenses drawn, one special license was auctioned off by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. It went for $35,000!! Get your bows out. ● An M1 Garand rifle match is to be held in the community on September 19, 2010. ●The event will be held at the Dormont - Mt. Lebanon Sportsman's Club located off of Linden Road in North Strabane Township. ● The match will begin at 10:00 am. ● It will be a 100 yard, 50 round, 4 stage, 3 position match for any safe M1 rifle in 'as issued' condition. Iron sights only! ● Slow and sustained fire stages. ● All standard match and safety rules will be followed. ● Eye and ear protection is mandatory. ● Participants from the community are welcome. ● There is a $10.00 entrance fee. ● This is a CMP 'sanctioned match' and awards will be given to those who score sufficiently. ● Have questions or comments? There is a $6.00 entry fee.

Any centerfire weapon shooting a single projectile is allowed,

including, but not limited to:

● Any sight or optic is allowed, e.g., iron sights, red dots, magnified optics, and lasers. ● Match will be conducted at 100 yards, 65 total rounds

Course of fire: 5 sighting shots--any position 10 rounds rapid fire prone from standing --70 seconds with reload, X2 10 rounds rapid fire sitting/kneeling/squat from standing--60 seconds with reload, X2 10 rounds rapid fire offhand --60 seconds with reload, X2 ● No shooting jackets allowed ● Slings (if used) must be attached to front and rear of firearm ● Reloads must be conducted off the body (pocket or magazine pouch) Enjoy a fun match that gives you a chance to test your favorite defensive firearm in field positions at silhouette targets.
