Work with your parents/guardian and leader to select your 4-H projects. Let’s say you want to learn how to take a photograph, feed a dog, build a
birdhouse, or plant a garden. When you learn those skills, you also learn life skills such as:
how to make decisions and set goals
how to get organized
how to keep records
Anyone interest in becoming a 4-H Judge
If you are interested in becoming a 4-H exhibits judge,
please contact the Extension Office for more details. You
can also check out the State 4-H Judges page at

Projects, Projects, Projects!!
4-H has some great opportunities for members to get
involved. Iowa 4-H has over 45 project areas to
become involved in with many opportunities within
each area. Check out the project hotsheets at http://
www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/4-h-project-hot-
sheets.
Make sure to list any project areas that you are
interested in on your 4-H Online account to receive all
emails and mailings on the happenings of each project
area.
To begin your 4-H adventure, start looking at the many project areas that 4-H has to offer. You may choose one or more
projects from more than 45 different areas. There is a 4-H project for everyone! Projects are fun to do alone and with your
friends.
Think about:
An interest you’d like to explore
A hobby you’d like to learn more about
A topic of interest shared by you and your family
Remember to select projects that you can get help with from your:
parents/guardian
grandparents
friends
other 4-H members
The other part of the 4-H experience is club meetings, where you learn:
how to be a group member
how to speak in front of a group
how to work together on projects
how to be a good citizen
4-H is full of fun times to work and play with others, including community service projects, club trips and activities, and camps.
All these skills can help you as you go through school and beyond. For many 4-H’ers, an interest they have in certain 4-H project
areas will lead to future careers.
Start by finding 4-H project areas that are of interest to you. Contact the Extension Office to become enrolled in the project
areas. Then start using your creativity to explore new ideas and create new projects.
4-H Projects– Begin your adventure today!!

Photographing 4-H
Did you know the most enrolled 2012-2013 4-H
project in Winneshiek County was photography?
This is a very common 4-H project not only in
Winneshiek County but across the country.
This month we are encouraging 4-H clubs and
members to dig deeper in the photography pro-
ject. Discover how you can take awesome pho-
tographs, explore the rule of thirds, and dis-
cover how photography is an art, a science and
a communication tool.
4-H Project Hot Sheets and Exhibit Tip Sheets
are a wonderful resource for 4-H members.
These were created to provide ideas and pro-
ject resources as well as to provide members
opportunities to explore within each project.

½ A Heart Pizza Pocket
Supplies: roll of refrigerated flaky bis-
cuits, filling of your choice, prepared pizza
sauce
The adult heats the oven to 400 degrees F.
Divide the refrigerated biscuits into 10
pieces. Press each piece to form a 4” cir-
cle. Spread 1-2 Tbsp. of sauce on only half
of the circle, because you have to fold the
dough in half later. Don’t put sauce too
close to the edge. Add a filling(s). (Not
too much so you can fold it over.) Fold the
pizza circle in half. Press the edges with a
fork to seal. Place pizza pockets on a
greased cookie sheet. (Note: If you cover
the cookie sheet with parchment paper,
you can use a pencil to write each child’s
name next to his own heart pizza.) Bake at
400 degrees for 12-14 minutes or until a
deep golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.
Enjoy!
