Charlie Voelker is a life long resident of the Altamont community. He is a veteran of the US Navy and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway during the Vietnam war. Charlie farms and raises dairy beef. He and his wife Judy have been married 40 years. They have 3 sons, 1 daughter, 2 daughters-in-law, 1 son-in-law, 4 grandsons, 3 granddaughters and 1 great grandson.
Charlie is a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altamont and has held several offices in the Church. Charlie has served on the Effingham County Board for the past 12 years. As a member of the board, he has served on the Health Department board, 911 board, Effingham County Extension Building Association and several other committees related to Effingham County. He is retiring from the County Board this month, but intends to remain active in community events.
Charlie is very passionate about providing a healthy environment for fu-ture generations through recycling and conservation practices. He believes kids should participate in extra-curricular activities and community events to keep their minds and bodies active.

The Shumway Eagles 4-H Club is 50 + members which come from all
over Effingham County, although, most come from the Beecher City and
Shumway area. Our club is active throughout the year, meeting every
month but December. As a club, we start the year with an election of
officers to run the meetings for the year. We follow parliamentary
procedure, thus learning how to make motions, second them, amend
them, and vote on them. Some day, maybe one of these members will
hold an important position in a company or in politics and say, “It all
started with things I learned in my 4-H club meetings.” Members also
learn and participate in community serve projects as a club and also as
individuals. Members are encouraged to participate in a variety of
activities that helps other people and groups, as well as, ourselves.
Everyone is encouraged to show their knowledge and skills learned by
giving a prepared talk or demonstration during the year. We have
discovered some innovative ideas and extraordinary talent among our
members through talks and demonstrations.
Each year is built around a theme. When the members meet at each
month’s meeting, roll call, the topic, and even recreation, if possible, is
centered around the theme. This month’s meeting was a learning
experience and fun time as the topic was fashion design and modeling.
We learned about all the different jobs in the area of fashion design and
how much money fashion designers make. It depends on what kind of
designer they are. We also discovered that very few models make large
salaries, and most do not make much over minimum wage. We divided
into groups for recreation. Each group chose a model, worked together as
fashion designers, had a write up about their design, and a MC to read the
write up as the model paraded on the catwalk. All had a great time and
show some truly imaginative abilities with only newspaper and duct tape
as material to work with. Just as hind site is sometimes better than 20/20,
we wished we had some video cameras to share the fun the members had.
We have so much more planned for the coming 4-H year as our club
continues to “Charge into the Future.”
