2013WholesalePortfolio List
Scotland’s mostreliable Wholesaler
The personal wine merchant for qualitywines & quality service.
Edinburgh Wine Importers was founded in 1975 to meet a growing demand for a wholesaler with a World Wide portfolio of good wines and hence its descriptive name. During the mid nineties many great wine agencies were secured for the Company which included Grahams Ports, Miguel Torres, Williams and Humberts, Chapoutier and Joseph Perrier. In 2006 the company’s founding shareholders made the decision to transfer the stewardship of the Company to vineyard owner and wine enthusiast Sir David Murray. This important change brought new investment with relocation of the Company to a more central location in Livingston, West Lothian. As the Trade in general goes through a period of consolidation, we have incorporated over the past 3 years four Scottish companies to ensure their illustrious heritage continues their presence in Scotland under the shelter of The Wine Importers Umbrella.
The Wine Importers Group
TM Robertson was founded in the 1920’s by a father and son partnership, they shipped and bottled wines in their own cellars. With the demand for wine growing in the 1970’s, TM Robertson established its reputation as a high quality wine company under the stewardship of Graeme Robertson, who led TM Robertson to become one of Scotland’s best known and most respected wine companies. In the summer of 2009, TM Robertson became part of the Wine Importers group regaining its independent Scottish status. Many of the wineries that TM Robertson distributed have been integrated into Wine Importers portfolio, such as Duboeuf, Antinori and Masi.
Harris Fine Wines was set up in 1999 by John Harris. It was set up to supply restaurants and hotels with a range of quality wines and attractive wines lists at competitive prices. Their customers enjoyed a level of service and personal support which competitors found it hard to match. The company quickly established its reputation in the Oriental Restaurant market. Harris Fine Wines is now trading under the Wine Importers Umbrella with John Harris continuing at the helm.
Cockburn’s of Leith is Scotland’s oldest Wine Merchant, founded in 1796 by Robert Cockburn. It can boast many famous customers in the past such as Charles Dickens and Sir Walter Scott, who on one occasion ordered 350 dozen bottles of wine and 36 dozen spirits. In 1822 the company was awarded a Royal Warrant after supplying wines to King George IV. Cockburn’s of Leith has always been renowned for service, advice and the quality of its wines which continues today as part of the Wine Importers Umbrella. Former owner. Ian Macphail, ensures the spirit and ethos of Cockburn’s lives on.
Irvine Robertson Wines was founded by Sandy Irvine Robertson in 1984, who with his larger than life personality quickly established the company on the Scottish scene. With his many contacts in ‘high places’ and his wonderful penchant for publicity, Irvine Robertson flourished. The family connection to the business was strengthened when Sandy’s brother John joined. He continued to run the business after Sandy’s sad passing away in 1999. 10 years on, John also passed on and Charlie Shentall assumed the lead role, continuing with pride, the core values of quality, choice and service.
Wine Importers acknowledge their responsibilies in the continuation of the history, success and values inherent in the above Scottish companies and endeavour’s at all times to keep their flame alive.

CHAMPAGNE BARON ALBERTThe wines are rich in the red grapes of Pinot Meunier, giving it more fruit and weight. Beautiful bubbles and good maturity.
CHAMPAGNE JOSEPH PERRIER ET FILSWine Importers enjoy a close relationship with this family owned Grande Marque. Based in the town of Chalons-en-Champagne, JosephPerrier produce an exceptionally elegant style of wine. The house own a large share of their own vineyards which is unusual forChampagne. This allows both control over quality and consistency. The impressive cellars here are being used as part of the region’s bidto gain UNESCO world heritage status.
Joseph Perrier Cuvée Royale is named in honour of its Royal connections, it was the favourite Champagne of both Queen Victoria and KingEdward VII. The entire range is extremely strong, the Rosé and Blanc de Blancs have newly released vintage expressions, bottled in anunusual vessel found in the cellars from the 18th century.
The prestige Cuvee Josephine is exemplary, from a small number of Grand Crus showing the best of the vintage. The bottle itself is a wonderto behold, hinting at the elegance and character of the wine within.
CHAMPAGNE BOLLINGERThis eponymous house needs no introduction. It is recognised the world over for its richer style of Champagne and of course its JamesBond connection! In the cellars, tradition rules, use of seasoned oak for maturation provides complexity and the cellars stretch forkilometres allowing the wine time to mature and is only released when ready.
Grande Année remains one of the best value prestige champagnes you can buy, full of complexity and capable of long aging.

CHAMPAGNE TESTULATOur superb entry-level champagne has a long history: the marque was established in 1862, while the cellars themselves are seventeenthcentury. The fifth generation of the Testulat family is now in charge. Their seventeen hectares of vineyards lie in the Marne Valley, nearEpérnay, and are dominated by Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier; both the Carte d’Or and the Rosé are fifty-fifty blends of these two varieties, with all the biscuity richness one would expect. The Blanc de Blancs, from 100% Chardonnay, provides a contrasting style that majorson finesse.
FRENCH SPARKLINGFrance still leads the way when it comes to great value entry-level fizz. Baron d’Arignac illustrates this succinctly while the Duc de Breuxis astonishingly crisp, clean and savoury for the money. Charles de Fère offers bottle-fermented elegance from a property twenty milesfrom Champagne.
LOIRE SPARKLINGAt the start of the 19th century , a young Flemish man, Jean-Baptiste Ackerman, was well aware of the reputation of the wines from theVal de Loire. In 1810 this rich banker's son left Antwerp and arrived in Champagne where he explored the hills and valleys of this chalkyregion and began to learn all the secrets of the famous drink concocted in the 17th Century by the Benedictine monk Dom Pérignon.Subsequently, he became the founder in Saumur of the "method traditionnelle". For forty years he was the only producer of this Val deLoire wine with fine bubbles.
Langlois-Chateau is now owned by Bollinger so quality is through the roof. A beautiful cremant with Chenin and Cabernet Franc usedproviding a point of difference to other sparkling wines.
PROSECCOThe popularity of Prosecco has enabled us to offer a wide range of wines from different producers. La Delfina is carefully sourced and
offers the playful bubbles and fruity style that everyone enjoys. Rizzardi and Col de Salici offer more sophisticated wines from the best
terroir in the hills of Valdobbiadene. Villa Sandi are a super premium producer making a range of wines showing off the different
vineyards of the region.

FRIZZENTIAlways on the cutting edge, Wine Importers were excited to list this pioneering product. The popularity of Prosecco continues unabatedand here is a solution for the on trade: prosecco on draught. Produced by a carefully selected supplier and made from Prosecco grapes, this product can be served much more quickly than pouring from a bottle and eliminates costly wastage. Available in both brut and roséstyles.
VINA SPUMANTESince the change in regulations from 2010, producers are no longer allowed to make a rosé Prosecco, instead they must label it as vinaspumante Rosado. It is still substantially the same wine however, fruity and appealing.
In contrast Mezzacorona produce the Rotari wines, made in the method Champenoise in the cool climate of Alto Adige. Chardonnayand Pinot Noir are used, in different proportions to make the rosé, to great effect producing wines that are crisp and complex.
CAVA: RENE BARBIER & CODORNIURené Barbier was the son of a Frenchman, but his name is inextricably linked to Penedès; these Cavas are outstanding examples of the
region. A careful selection of grapes and extended ageing on the lees give wines of rare concentration and finesse.
AUSTRALIA & NZ SPARKLINGThe coolest Antipodean vineyard sites are ideally suited to premium sparkling wine. Tasmania has staked a serious claim as the world’s
finest fizz-producing region outside Champagne, with Jansz one of the undisputed leaders of this emerging industry. Traditional method
and use of champenoise grapes give wines of elegance, and making its debut on our list the vintage exploits longer aging and the best
climate to produce a wine to challenge the best champagnes.
Hunters Miru Miru from Marlborough is named from the Maori word for bubbles. A delicious traditional method wine from one of the
regions founding producers.

ROSÉ FRANCEFrance offers the greatest range of rosé styles, from the palest pink Anjou, through the mineral, almost salty elegance of Provence,
to the richer offerings from the Languedoc.
ROSÉ ITALYJust as in France, Italian rosés come in a broad range of colours and weights; the red-skinned Pinot Grigio makes the lightest, more of
a blush style, followed by the Bardolino Chiaretto and the crisp, strawberryish Lagrein and Cipresseto (made from Sangiovese).
Scalabrone is the rosé of Antinori’s renowned Guado al Tasso estate, and offers supreme complexity and elegance, from a mix of
Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah.
ROSÉ WINES
ROSÉ SPAINAs in France, Grenache – here called Garnacha – comes up trumps for rosé, aided and abetted by Tempranillo. These are fruity rosés,but mostly dry on the finish.

ROSÉ BULGARIAThe reknowned Domaine Boyar makes this rosé of merlot, in a medium-weight, soft, appealing style.
ROSÉ NEW WORLDHere a number of styles are on show, however they all have one thing in common; plenty of fruit. The Zinfandel is of course off-dry, and
while the Pinotage is not sweet, the fruit on show is very tropical. The Chilean rosés are both full bodied with a good deep colour, while
the Yalumba and Running Duck both take a middle ground.
TORRES NATUREODemand for low alcohol wines has never been higher, and Torres have been at the forefront of developing technology. This is the results
of their labours. They first make a wine from highly fragrant Muscat grape, then remove the alcohol through the spinning cone method.
Still full of aromatic flavour but just 0.05% ABV.
DE-ALCOHLISED WINES
RENÉ MURÉ René Muré and his children Véronique and Thomas represent the 11th and 12th generations of winegrowers. The Muré family have been
wine makers in the region of Rouffach since 1648. In 1935, Alfred Muré, René's grandfather, bought the Grand Cru Clos St Landelin
vineyard. Here then, is a family that intimately understand their terroir and produce wines of great character.
ALSACE
Another growing sector of the wine industry is organic certification. This is a high bar to pass, zero artificial pesticides or sprays for anumber of years are required before certification will be granted. In some regions it is easier to achieve than others, with especially drierareas proving more naturally resistant to rot and disease.
While these are our certified organic wines, many of our producers abide by these practices without seeking recognition. Indeed someof our producers such as Chapoutier follow the Biodynamic doctrine which also preaches a harmony of nature approach, promotinghealth in the vineyard.

MICHEL LEONProduced by Domaine Sainte-Marguerite, this range of Cuvée Michel Leon shows off the typical Alsatian varietal range to great effect.
DOMAINE OSTERTAG, EPFIGThese wines are some of the most interesting you will taste from Alsace. The domaine has been run by biodynamic principals since1998 and draws from 15 hectares over 75 different vineyard sites. Open-minded and innovative, he does not restrict himself toconventional techniques or the AOC rule books. In his hands the more unusual Sylvanerzand Pinot Blanc grapes are given aflavoursome twist, with the pinot blanc spending some time in French oak barriques. The Pinot Noir is outstanding in the region, aselegant as it is complex.

MARQUIS DE GOULAINEThis is a historic Chateau presided over by the Marquis des Goulaine, currently in their 11th generation. The Chateau’s winery datesback to 986 which, according to Robert, makes the Goulaines the oldest winemaking family in the world! He believes passionately inthe upkeep of the chateau and has added a tropical butterfly farm, the only one in France. His son Mathieu has taken over the winemaking and the domaine goes from strength to strength. Alongside the varietal vin de pays (which offer unrivalled value for money) theyproduce sublime Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé.
PAYS NANTAISWhere the Loire river flows into the sea, these wines are perhaps the best example of how effective food matching improves the wine.Made to go with seafood of which the Scottish coast abounds they are bone-dry, crisp and salty, balanced with the subtle fruit flavoursof the unusual grape varieties, Melon de Bourgogne & Gros Plant.
With its vineyards near Vallet to the south east of Nantes ‘Domaine Dorices’ has been making fine wine for generations. Using organicprinciples and developing the flavours of the wine in the traditional way through resting on the ‘Lie’ in barrel, their wines are truly typicalof the region.
LOIRE VALLEYVINS DE PAYS DU VAL DE LOIRE
ANJOU, SAUMURLANGLOIS-CHATEAUThis family company was founded when Monsieur Langlois married Madame Chateau, hence the unusual word order! These days partowned by Champagne Bollinger, the domaine has had good investment propelling it to great recognition. Of course the sparkling wine-Cremant de Loire- is exemplary, but the still wines also show great elegance. The white is 100% Chenin Blanc whilst the red entirelyCabernet Franc, both make an unusual and welcome addition to any wine list.

UPPER LOIREThe most famous appellations are found here, those of Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé. We have added to our range some of the most world
famous and highly regarded producers as well as those of our consistent and long standing family houses. Also not to be missed is the
Cheverny, a small appellation blending in a portion of Chardonnay to the Sauvignon Blanc to create a unique wine.
COTEAUX DE LAYONNo less than Robert Parker said of Chateau de Fesles; “This domaine deserves its own classification.” An Historic Chateau dating back
to 1070, it produces the best of the Loire’s speciality sweet wine grape, Chenin blanc. It has been given the alternative name of Yquem
du Val de Loire!
TOURAINE
WHITE BORDEAUXIn terms of sales, Bordeaux Blanc is in decline with many vineyards being turned over to red wine production. In terms of enjoyment, the wines have never been better and should be in position to appeal to a market that loves fresh wines, especially those of SauvignonBlanc. Of course in Bordeaux the Sauvignon is blended with Semillon and occasionally a small percentage of Muscadelle. There aretwo styles of wine, the first fresh and fermented in stainless steel, these wines offer a good alternative to Loire or Chile. The secondemploy oak aging, and usually a higher percentage of Semillon, these are serious wines fit for aging or matching with haute cuisine.Much like sherry, the fact they are out of fashion tends to mean that a buyer also gets extraordinary value for money.

ST ESTÈPHEWithin this appellation there is a wide range of qualities, from the breed and power of its leading cru, to some rather lean, austerewines with a distinct gout de terroir. Improved methods of vinification have rendered many wines less rustic than they once were.
PAULLIACIt is here that the Cabernet Sauvignon achieves its most characteristic results, producing marked blackcurrant style for which it isjustly famous. The wines are the most powerful in terms of bouquet, body and flavour of all Medocs. The best Crus combine this withfinesse that develops with ageing.
ST JULIENThe soils have more clay than Margaux and there is quite a difference between vineyards near the Gironde and those further inland,
where more fleshy wines are made. These wines are of great character and originality, with more body and vivid fruit than those of
Margaux. They match the best Pauillacs for longevity.
MARGAUXThe outstanding Characteristics of the appellation are finesse and breed, the result of deep, poor, gravelly ridges and a high
proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Many Margaux wines have more tannin and are slower to evolve. Also included under this
appellation are most of Arsac and all of Cantenac.

PESSAC LEOGNAN/GRAVESThe region is a continuation geographically of the Medoc surrounding the city of Bordeaux and to the south. The list of red wines
from this region includes some of the greatest wines in the Gironde (Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut Brion Domaine de Chevalier Pape
Clement). Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape and the wines possess a special charm and elegance quite distinct from their
Medocian cousins.
ST EMILIONSt Emilion are often approachable somewhat earlier than most Left Bank reds due to their higher content of Merlot, which is often
more than 50% of the blend. The wines have a richness and often a very appealing sweetness particularly in the best years.
POMEROL Pomerol with its smaller often family-worked vineyards produces wonderfully deep-coloured, ripe, rich velvety wines again ready for
consumption after four to five years due to the high proportion of mixed gravel sand and clay in the vineyards. They also include a
high level of Merlot.

MAGNUMS
QUINSONJean-Louis Quinson made his name in southern Burgundy and makes interesting wines showing all the facets of local terroir. Inparticular, the Chateau de l’Abbaye is a magnificent property in the cru region of Fleurie. As long ago as the 17th century, observersnoted that grapes grew better here than anywhere else.
BEAUJOLAIS
DUBOEUFIn 1951, at the age of eighteen, Georges Duboeuf began delivering wine to local restaurants on his bicycle. He has gone on to
become one of the most important and influential wine producers in France. Born into a family of growers, he started his eponymous
négociant business in 1964, bottling not just the wine from his own vineyards, but that of his neighbours too.
It’s not quite a case of poacher turned gamekeeper, though, as Duboeuf has been instrumental in raising the profile of the entire
region. Often described as the King of Beaujolais, Duboeuf is also its most tireless ambassador, though his range now extends far
beyond that appellation.
In the dark days of November, we also offer that most cheering of wines, Beaujolais Nouveau.

BURGUNDY-CHABLIS
DOMAINE BOIS D'YVERGeorges and his son Thomas Pico have converted their entire estate to organic viticulture, believing it will benefit the health of the
vineyard and of course the quality of the fruit. The wines tend to go through malolactic fermentation so have a softness that sets them
apart. This small family estate are pursuing the modern style of Chablis, lean and with great minerality.
WILLIAM FEVREComing from a family that has been in the Chablis region for more than 250 years, William Fèvre’s father was already a great wine-
maker after World War II. His son William founded the Domaine de la Maladière and announced his first harvest in 1959. Today the
House is regarded as being in the top rank. New to the list this year is the small appellation of St Bris made using Sauvignon Blanc.
JEAN-MARC BROCARDThe domaine of Jean-Marc Brocard began as just one hectare, a gift from his father-in-law when he married into a winegrowing family. He has since expanded to 180 hectares, of which 40 are biodynamic, and is widely recognized as one of Chablis’ leading producers. The approach is one of minimal intervention in both vineyard and winery: cultivation is practically organic throughout, with ploughingin place of herbicides, predators instead of pesticides, manure rather than fertilizer, and as little spraying as the grapes’ healthrequires. The results are pure, unadorned expressions of the great chalk slopes of Chablis.

WHITE BURGUNDYDOMAINE JESSIAUMEImpossible to miss, the small jewel of Domaine Jessiaume sits welcomingly at the entrance to the tiny spa town of Santenay in theCote de Beaune. Built in 1850, it comprises over 37 acres including some of the saught after premiere crus. Domaine Jessiaume, now under the ownership of Sir David Murray, established their negociant business Maison Jessiaume in 2008 and a formidablereputation as a small negociant eleveur of unparalleled quality has been formed to compliment the existing Domaine holdings.
BOUCHARD PERE ET FILSThe Burgundian wine Domaine of Bouchard Père et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731 though it is no longer family owned.Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them thelargest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.
VINCENT GIRADINVincent’s anti-expansionist tendencies continue, as he scales back production and focuses on quality above all else. The new labeldesign mirrors the development of his style, retaining the former clarity but with greater modernity and class. While the generosity ofthe wines persists, there is a new level of energy and refinement to entice the purists. Value for money remains exceptional from topto bottom.
LES HERITIERS des COMTES LAFONDomaines des Comtes Lafon has the deepest and coolest wine cellars in Burgundy, and produce some of the greatest dry white
wines full of astonishing depth and complexity yet supremely balanced.

CHAPOUTIER - NORTHERN RHÔNEFac & Spera, “Do & Hope”, is the Maison Chapoutier’s motto and this is the philosophy behind their single vineyard selections thatare the results from one particular plot. Here, the winemaker lets the terroir express itself unfettered to achieve the conjunction of soil, climate and traditional know-how with exactitude. It is a snapshot of a grape, in a certain year, in a given terroir. These are exceptionaland, rare wines, created from their oldest vines. Michel has converted much of these estates to biodynamic production, in somecases organic. In all cases, they are wines of superb balance: oak is never more than a supporting role and it is the character of thefruit that sings from the wine.

GUIGAL - SOUTHERN RHÔNEThe Guigal Domaine was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the ancient village of Ampuis, home of the wines of the Côte-Rôtie.These vineyards are over 2,400 years old and you can still see the small terraced walls characteristic of the Roman period. In total, the vineyards of the Guigal estate cover over 45 hectares, including illustrious plots which have become flagships of theirappellations. In addition to their acquisitions of exceptional vineyards over the years, the Guigal family bought and lovingly restored the Châteaud’Ampuis, situated on the banks of the Rhône River with the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde hills behind. As well as the restorations tothe Château, a cooperage was established in the grounds, where all the barrels are assembled and toasted, for the maturation of theGuigal wines.

CHAPOUTIER - SELECCION PARCELLAIRES
RED
DELASThe revolution at Delas is now well under way. The combination of Jacques Grange’s winemaking talent, sound financial backing, some stellar vineyards and a run of excellent vintages has propelled Delas back to the top echelon of Rhône producers. Though thefirm dates back to 1835, it has really come of age in the twenty-first century, and since 2004 has barely skipped a beat.Jacques Grange graduated from Dijon, worked for star consultant Jean-Luc Colombo and raised the quality at Chapoutier beforearriving at Delas. Under his influence a more modern, ‘boutique’ approach has been taken: there is more (though not excessive) newwood in evidence; fining and filtration have been minimized; cold soaks and lees contact have boosted fruit intensity and texturalrichness. The newly rebuilt winery is now gravity-fed for the gentlest possible handling of the wine, and with eighty-five small tanksinstalled, there is huge scope for very precise blending. The production from their own holdings in the most important appellations of the Northern Rhône is bolstered by that of severalconscientious growers with whom they have longstanding relationships. All the work in the cellar leads, paradoxically, to one of themost transparent and expressive ranges of Rhône wine currently available

CHATEAU ROUTAS, PROVENCEThe location of Chateau Routas is spectacular; in the heart of Provence, equidistant from the French Riviera on the Mediterraneancoast and the foothills of the Alps. It is surrounded by tiny medieval villages that cling to steep cliffs and overlooks miles ofspectacular hillsides, woods and rivers. In 2005 Sir David Murray took ownership, ushering in a new era for Château Routas. Newplantings continue to augment the Wild Boar range, the rosé particularly has caught the critics eye. At the top end the Syrah isstructured and and age worthy, more reminiscent of a St Joesph while the Coquelicot takes it Viogner cuttings from Condrieu, aimingfor the same delicious depth.
BEAURENARDThe Coulon family have run Domaine de Beaurenard for seven generations, and combine ambition and modesty to winning effect.Their Boisrenard cuvées, red and white, are stunning benchmarks of old-vine Châteauneuf, using the traditional thirteen and sixpermitted varieties respectively. The Cotes du Rhone benefits from experienced wine making and hints at the complexity to be foundin a Chateauneuf. The domaine is currently in conversion to organic status.

ROUSSILLON, L'HERAULT
MAS DAUMAS DE GASSACIn the beautiful rugged terrain of the Roussillon lie some of the best terroir, much of it untapped. In fact this house has been called theLafitte of the Roussillon, reflecting the balance and poise this wine has. This estate ended up under vine almost by accident.Originally purchased as a holiday home, an oenologist friend recognised the excellent potential of the soils. The Grand Vin Rougetakes more inspiration from Bordeaux and is Cabernet based, where the white is a more unusual blend of Chardonnay, Viogner &Petit Manseng. In addition, there are also a range of varietal blends where the owners have saved old vineyards that would otherwisehave been grubbed up.
LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLONThe wild, mountainous scrubland of the western Languedoc is producing increasingly expressive wines, imbued not so much with thespice of the Rhône, but with the herbs of the garrigue that surrounds the vines. Minervois, further north and higher in altitude, has thegreatest finesse. There have been vines at Château Villerambert-Julien for at least 750 years, and yet the estate is now producingarchetypal modern Minervois, with a high proportion of Syrah giving wines of typicity and refinement.

This producer offers the best of Italy: fruit driven wines that are equally easy drinking on their own or alongside food.
NORTHERN ITALY
PRUNOTTO, Famiglia Antinori-PiedmonteAlfredo Prunotto gave his name and thirty-three years of his life to this renowned winery in Piedmont. Since 1989 it has beenowned by the Antinori family, who have sought to boost the already high standards by extending the vineyard holdings, includingplots in the de facto grands crus of Bric Turot and Bussia. The quality of the top wines goes without saying, but the rest of therange is made with equal aplomb. The style is modern without being exaggerated: freshness of aroma and approachability ofstructure are viewed as positives, but copious new oak is not. Indeed, the only wines that see the inside of a brand new barriqueare the outstanding single vineyard Barberas.

BROGLIA-GaviThe most characterful example of Piedmont’s native Cortese grape comes from around the town of Gavi, and the wines madeclosest to the town get to bear the odd double-moniker Gavi di Gavi. The La Meirana is all about freshness and vitality, with apple, citrus and mineral aromas, while the Bruno Broglia bottling is weightier, due to low yields from a selection of 50 to 70-year oldvines.
GUERRIERI RIZZARDI-VenetoGuerrieri Rizzardi is under the ownership of the Rizzardi family. It remains a family business with vineyards in the four Classicoareas for the production of the Veronese wines of Bardolino, Valpolicella, Soave and Valdadige. They are based in Bardolino, housed in the ancient building belonging to the Guerrieri family and its ancestors since 1450. Production is distinctly natural, eschewing pesticides except when absolutely necessary, low yields giving concentrated fruit. These all combine to give some ofthe most characterful wines of the Veneto.
GAVI
MASI-VenetoMost producers would be content with notching up a single ground-breaking contribution to the wine culture of their region. Asdedicated to research as they are to winemaking, and driven by an unwavering desire to stay at the cutting edge, Masi havemanaged three in the last sixty years. They are perhaps best known as a leading Amarone producer, having been instrumental in thedevelopment of this extraordinary style, made solely from semi-dried grapes. In the late 1950s, they identified certain historic vineyardplots which are vinified as Amarone and bottled separately to this day. Their work on other wine styles has been no less influential, however. In 1964, they launched the now-legendary Campofiorin, which revived the technique of a second fermentation with semi-dried grapes, adding depth and complexity to Valpolicella. They have also rescued the ancient Oseleta variety from extinction; used insome of their blends and occasionally on its own.

SEREGO ALIGHIERI-VenetoThis estate was bought in 1353 by the son of Dante “Divine Comedy” Alighieri, and is still owned by his descendants. Masi lend
their winemaking expertise. Cool vineyards near Lake Garda give wonderful richness and clarity to the flavours, and an extra twist
comes from the use of traditional cherry wood barrels for the reds imparting a unique spicy quality.
MACULAN-BreganzeFor most people outside the region, Maculan is Breganze. Stretching between the Alpine foothills and the Roman town of Vicenza, the Breganze vineyards can easily yield anonymous wines, but such is Fausto Maculan’s determination to transcend the norm thathe manages to wring every last drop of character from his carefully grown grapes, be they local specialities like Vespaiola (thewasp-seducing basis of Torcolato) or international varieties that he has imported and planted. Torcolato is truely a world classwine, made from dried grapes, whilst the Dindarello is a charm, fragrant muscat grapes with lemony freshness.
MARCO FELLUGA-CollioItaly’s north-eastern corner is home to its greatest concentration of fine white wines. It was in the region of Collio Goriziano that low-temperature winemaking techniques were introduced in the 1960s, and the fresh, delicately aromatic style of these often varietalwines became the new blueprint for the whole area. Collio (as it is commonly known) was under Hapsburg rule until 1918, whichexplains the well-established presence of French grapes alongside local specialities like Friulano and Ribolla Gialla. Marco Felluga isa leading exponent of modern Collio, offering unoaked varietal wines of intensity and purity. This historic property, owned by Marco Felluga, is superiore in two senses: it occupies particularly high slopes, and also offers winesthat are even better than those to which Felluga puts his own name. Though 10% of each varietal wine is fermented in oak, you wouldbe hard pushed to detect it, such is the concentration and personality coming from the fruit.

MEZZACORONA-Trentino,Alto AdigeEuropean Winery of the Year 2009, Wine EnthusiastMezzacorona was founded in 1904, one of the first growers’ associations in Italy. If it was progressive then, it remains so, with a state-of-the-art winery and meticulous viticulture bringing out the full potential of its 2,400 hectares of vineyards. Those vineyards areto be found on the plains and terraces of the Dolomite foothills, stretching between Lake Garda and the Alps to the north. This is therefore a sizeable and varied resource, and its management by one company carries an important benefit: each vineyardsite is planted to the grape variety best suited to its particular characteristics. Were the growers to work individually, they might eachhedge their bets by planting a mixture of varieties, some more appropriate than others. But instead we see optimization on a grandscale: Teroldego on the Piana Rotaliana, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay in the Valle dell’Adige, and Merlot and Cabernet in the warmerzone towards Lake Garda. It is then the winery’s task to ensure that the fruit quality is preserved all the way through to the bottle; aided by the latest equipment,it achieves this with impressive consistency, with the entry-level varietal wines and the small parcels of Riserva receiving equalattention. Add to this a longstanding adherence to sustainability and green innovation, and you have a company that represents theepitome of responsibility at every level – environmental, oenological and social.

ANTINORIThe Antinori family have been producing wine in Tuscany for six centuries, and exporting it for four; that’s twenty-six generations ofuninterrupted family ownership! The first recorded mention of the family dates from 1188, when they worked in the silk trade. Theymoved to Florence in the early thirteenth century, and remain central figures in the fabric of the city; Piazza Antinori is the square inthe historic centre where their offices are located.Winemaking was added to the family’s activities in 1385, and during the sixteenth century the wines spread, along with Antinori’sreputation, to France, Flanders, Spain and North Africa. The purchase of the Tignanello estate in 1900 marked the beginning of aremarkable period of expansion, which shows no signs of abating. Through judicious acquisition of vineyards and an uncanny knackfor developing iconic wines, Antinori has become Tuscany’s – arguably Italy’s – pre-eminent wine producer, with an importantpresence in Piedmont, Lombardy, Umbria and Puglia. Marchese Piero Antinori sums up the company’s outlook thus: “Ancient rootsplay an important role in our philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation.”Tuscany and Umbria are the regions where Antinori has the highest concentration of vineyards, totalling almost 1,400 hectares ofprime sites. Some of the wines – Badia a Passignano, Pèppoli, Tignanello and Solaia – are each the product of a single estate, whileVilla Antinori, Marchese Antinori and the Vinsanto are blends of selected lots from several of the family’s vineyards, including theflagship Tenuta Tignanello.

GUADO AL TASSO, Famiglia Antinori- BolgheriSituated in Maremma on the Tuscan coast, ninety-six kilometres southwest of Florence, the Guado al Tasso estate extends from thegreen hills surrounding the old village of Bolgheri down to the sea. This beautiful plain is called the Anfiteatro Bolgherese due to thefact that the hills enclose the plains overlooking the sea to form a natural amphitheatre. The Bolgheri DOC started out as rosé-only;whites were permitted in 1984, and ten years later the laws finally recognized the extraordinary success of the mould-breakingCabernet-based reds.

CENTRAL ITALY/TUSCANY/ANTINORI
LA BRACCESCA,Famiglia Antinori-TuscanyWith its warmer climate and local variant of Sangiovese – Prugnolo – Vino Nobile offers a richer, headier experience than Chianti tothe north. The wines have been made for at least 1,200 years; Antinori joined the party in typically impressive style in 1990. The LaBraccesca estate straddles Vino Nobile and the neighbouring appellation, Cortona, which is proving Italy’s most successfulappellation for Syrah.
PIAN DELLE VIGNE, Famiglia Antinori-TuscanyBrunello is the driest zone of Tuscany, and has a winning combination of warm days and cool nights, allowing Sangiovese to reachoptimum ripeness while retaining acidity and maximising concentration. The result is one of Italy’s grandest appellations, in whichAntinori bought this well-sited estate in 1995. The wine spends at least two years in large oak barrels to soften the tannins and allowits complexity to emerge.
CASTELLO della SALA, Famiglia Antinori-UmbriaNiccolò Antinori bought the fourteenth-century Castello della Sala in 1940, to provide a source of white wines to match the excellenceof his Tuscan reds. With the introduction of Cervaro della Sala in 1987, his dream was fully realized: this is one of Italy’s definingwhites, as influential and sought-after as Tignanello. Bramìto del Cervo is effectively a mini-Cervaro, further proof of Umbria’s affinitywith Chardonnay.

POGGIO ANTICO-Tuscany
DESSERT
TERUZZI & PUTHOD-TuscanyEnrico Teruzzi is a true Tuscan pioneer, being not only one of the first people in the region to install temperature control in hiscellar, but also doing much to save Vernaccia from extinction. Admittedly, the legislation was already in place to do so: Vernacciadi San Gimignano was the first DOC to be created, in 1966, eight years before Enrico’s arrival. Nonetheless, his determination hasensured that this most characterful of Tuscany’s indigenous white varieties is more than a legal curiosity. San Gimignano, close tothe Chianti zone, also has a growing reputation for Sangiovese.
FALESCO-UmbriaRiccardo Cotarella is one of Italy’s most renowned winemaking consultants; his brother Renzo is chief winemaker of Antinori.Together, they own Falesco, an estate that straddles Umbria and Latium in an area that had been famous for centuries for itsoutstanding wines, yet in recent years had almost sunk into oblivion. Retrieving historical vines was considered of paramountimportance when the winery was established, and it took several years of painstaking research and selections before old clones, which had almost been considered extinct, could be isolated. Take Roscetto, which after much experimentation by Riccardo hasyielded the secret of how best to vinify it: ‘cryomacerated’ at very low temperature to release more flavour from the skins, thenfermented and matured in oak for three months, it offers generous flavours of pineapple and vanilla within a taut, almostBurgundian structure.
GOTTO D'ORO-CatinumThis famous appellation from the volcanic hills surrounding Rome finds a consistently good producer in Gotto d’Oro, the firstwinegrowers’ association in the region. This superiore version offers a slightly weightier take on the traditional blend of Malvasia,Trebbiano and Greco
ABRUZZOThe wine of Montepluciano d’Abruzzo is certainly well known, the wine coming from the region is indeed prodigious. They key isto source producers with quality rather than quantity at heart. Itynera is a balanced medium-weight example, and the Valentina is aselection of top fruit from fifteen hectares of vineyards, given a longer maceration and eighteen months in oak, making for a morecomplex, structured wine, for drinking a little bit older.
FATTORIA LAILA - MarchesOne of Italy’s finest white grapes, Verdicchio’s most famous wine comes from the Castelli di Jesi zone twenty miles from theMarches’ Adriatic coast. Fattoria Laila is a centuries-old estate into which new life has been breathed by Andrea Crocenzi, theowner since 1990. His investment in new equipment and improved vine material has given experienced winemaker Lorenzo Landithe best possible tools with which to capture the essence of Verdicchio.

CENTRAL ITALY
FATTORIA MANCINI-MARCHESItaly may not often be associated with Pinot Noir, yet the stretch of coastline around Pesaro in the northern Marches has provedits suitability for two centuries, and the Mancini family have been lovingly tending Pinot here for five generations. With clay-limestone soil and temperatures moderated by the Adriatic, the terroir produces as good a Pinot as you will find outside the topcrus of Burgundy, as well as fascinating white Pinot Noir and some superb wines from Italian grape varieties: the well knownSangiovese plus the far more obscure local varieties Albanella and Ancellotta.
OCONEBased in Ponte, near Benevento, this family-owned producer celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010. The grandson of theoriginal founder has run the business since the 1970s alongside winemaker Luigi Pastore, whose own son Nicola heads upmarketing and export. They pioneered organic viticulture in the area, starting in 1984, and remain one of the most innovativeCampanian wine producers.
TORMARESCA , Famiglia Antinori-PugliaTormaresca is made up of two estates in different areas of Puglia: in the central, inland region of Castel del Monte they haveAglianico, and in the Salento peninsula of the extreme south-east, Primitivo and Negroamaro. Cabernet and Chardonnay aregrown in both zones, giving the winemaker a broad palette from which to blend the very consistent entry-level wines. Antinori onlyinvested here in 1998, yet in that time Tormaresca has become a flagship of Puglian production: Bocca di Lupo borrows theAglianico variety from further west to thrilling, blackberryish effect; Masseria Maìme is regularly one of Puglia’s best, made from itsgreatest local grape, Negroamaro. All the vineyards are planted unusually densely, giving extra depth to the wines.

PALA-SARDINIAPala’s roots go deep into the land of Sardinia. Salvatore Pala established the estate in 1950; since 1995 his son Mario hastransformed both winery and vineyards into a modern-day reference point for Sardinian wine. The mixture of grapes on the island matches its location: as well as sharing the Vermentino with Corsica, Provence and western Italy, it has also received considerableinput from Spain, in the form of Cannonau (Grenache), Bovale (Mourvèdre) and Carignano. Pala capture this diversity, offering winesof modern purity with genuine Sardinian style.

TASCA D'ALMERITA-SicilyThe large Regaleali estate, high in the central Sicilian hills, has been in the hands of the noble Tasca family since 1830. Ever since, the property has been run according to the best principles of the agricultural aristocracy: with one eye firmly on quality, and theother on experimentation. Tasca’s large range is the product of the family’s most successful innovations, including short pruningfor lower yields, the championing of local Inzolia and Nero d’Avola vines, the introduction of French varieties, and the use ofbarriques and temperature control. This is a singularly accomplished range of Sicilian wines.
TORRES-PenedesTorres is simultaneously both one of the most well known wineries in the world and yet still constantly innovating. Work ondeveloping low alcohol yeast strains combines with their production of a low alcohol white wine. Moving out of their homeland ofPenedes, Torres now have wineries in Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Priorat. Their environmental credentials are strong too: MiguelA. Torres was given the Lifetime Achievement 2011 Award for his commitment to the environment at the Drinks Business GreenAwards. Combined with one of the world’s most recognisable Brandys Torres are a company to be respected, and their productsto be enjoyed.

RIOJA
BODEGAS PATERNINA RIOJAIt is generally good advice when abroad to eat where the locals eat, and similarly drink what the locals drink. This fine old Rioja houseis extremely popular in its home country, the Crianza is thought to be the most popular in all Spain. Made in traditional style balancingthe charm of Tempranillo with the savoury flavours that people choose Rioja for. The range bursts with quality and astonishing valuefor money: epitomised by the Joven wine, Monte Haro which sees six months in oak so is really halfway to a crianza and beats allcompletion hands down.

BODEGAS VALDEMAR, RIOJA The roots of Bodegas Valdemar go back to 1889 and Joaquin Martínez Bujanda, and it remains an independent estate, specialising purely in Rioja. They are committed to using 100% estate-grown fruit, and this has allowed Valdemar both to keepquality consistent and also to experiment in great detail with different sites and obscure grape varieties. Unusually for Rioja, all thegrapes used by Bodegas Valdemar come from estate vineyards (290 hectares of them), giving unrivalled control over the qualityof the fruit at every level. The range of wines makes the most of this consistency and flexibility, from unoaked entry-levelRiojas bursting with flavour, to dense, complex rarities that offer even the most hardened aficionado something new.
FAMILIA MARTINEZ BUJANDA
BODEGAS ALEXANDROS - RIBERO DEL DUEROAlejandro Fernandez was called a madman when establishing his winery; he was planting vines when others were grubbing them upto replace with beetroot production for example. A tenacious approach with innovation, the first to use the espalier vine trainingsystem for example, has yielded outstanding results with some of the regions finest wines.
TORRES - RIBERA DEL DUERO
VEGA SICILIA-RIBBERO DEL DUEROWine importers are proud to showcase the best range of Ribera available, from Pesquera to Torres, and undoubtedly the jewel in thecrown, Vega Sicilia. The influence of Bordeaux was strong with the founder, trained in winemaking there and initially planting Cabernet& Merlot which survive to this day: it is not surprise that the wine has lead critics to compare it to Chateau Latour. Some incredibly oldvines and low yields give wines of superb concentration, while the winery’s commitment to extended aging means the wines tendonly to be released when mature, unusual in today’s fast moving wine scene.

LA MANCHA
FINCA ANTIGUA-La ManchaIn 1998, after more than a century in Rioja, the family decided to embark on a new project, and bought the large Finca Antiguaestate in La Mancha, where they built a stunning avant-garde winery. At the very high altitude of 900 metres, and with plenty oflimestone in the soil, the wines have far more finesse than others from this large appellation.
CANDIDATO-La Mancha
RUEDAIn this elevated region the fragrant Verdejo grape is king, producing wines of superb freshness and interesting flavours.
RÍAS BAIXAS The Albariño grape has become extremely fashionable in recent years and flourishes in Rías Baixas. Galicia is renowned for itsseafood, and this wine has evolved to be a perfect match.Casal Caeiro is in the coolest section of the Rías Baixas DO. The eleven hectares of vineyards owned by the estate yield a wine ofdelightful apricot fruit balanced by mineral freshness. Lolo is produced by the renowned Chivite, whilst Campus Stella is a familyowned bodega producing fine Albarino from only their own vineyards.

BACALHOAThis winery led Portugese wine into the modern era, introducing the best of modern technology creating cleaner wines which up untilthen had not been Portugal’s strength. For all their modernism, they retain the core of Portugese wines, indigineous grapes foundnowhere else making wines that are unique, a rare quality in these days of international varieties. The JP wines are both in a modern style and unoaked, while the Catarina and Quinta da Bacalhoa Branco both employ somesensitive oak aging. The Dom Martinho red has more structure and depth than the JP, while the Quinta da Bacalhoa has been the standard bearer for thehouse and indeed the country for many years.

SAINSTBURYOne of the USA’s best respected producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Saintsbury has been championing an elegant more“European” style for over twenty-five years. Dick Ward and David Graves met at oenology classes at UC Davis in 1977 and foundedSaintsbury in 1981, two years before the Carneros appellation was officially recognized. Since then they have remained at theforefront of experimentation in both vineyard and cellar, with detailed investigation into (among other things) clones, irrigation andfiltration helping them continually refine the style of their wines and stay at the top of the quality tree.

DOMAINE DROUHIN
CHATEAU STE MICHELLE-WASHINGTON STATEChateau Ste Michelle is the oldest winery in Washington State, with some of the most mature vineyards in the Columbia Valley, as wellas control of an unrivalled proportion of that appellation’s plantings. The winery’s roots date back to the repeal of prohibition in 1933,while the Ste Michelle name was first coined in 1967 as the name for a new range of wines overseen by the legendary Californiawinemaker André Tchelistcheff. The chateau itself was built in 1976, and the winery renamed Chateau Ste Michelle, since when the property has continued to grow, both in reputation and in extent. With over 1,400 hectares of vineyard on tap, Ste Michelle has the luxury of producing both highlyconsistent varietal wines and exquisite single-vineyard expressions. In addition to its own range of Washington wines, Chateau Ste Michelle is famous for high-profile joint ventures. Eroica is a Rieslingmade with the Mosel’s renowned Ernst Loosen. This wine has been consistently cited as America’s best Riesling.
BONNY DOON VINEYARDBonny Doon's irreverent owner, Randall Grahm, was an original California Rhone Ranger. One of those pioneer wine-makers to bringthe wines of France's Rhone Valley Stateside. Literally translated, "Le Cigare Volant" is French for The Flying Cigar, a euphemism for aFlying Saucer. These wines are a homage to Chateauneuf-du-Pape from similar grapes used in the Rhone and are flagship wines forthe house.
AU BON CLIMAT-SANTA BARBERA COUNTYIn 1974, Jim Clendenen taking a year out from legal studies went to visit France. After spending time in Burgundy and Champagne,he was inspired to drop his law career and move into wine making. He has become one of America’s most noted producers, nosurprise perhaps that the focus is on Pinot Noir & Chardonnay, and the wines follow Burgundian traditions to give elegance. He hasbeen named as one of the top fifty winemakers in the world by more than one critic. These are wines well worth adding to your list.

VINA SANTA RITASanta Rita was founded in 1880, a boom time for Chile while the rest of the world suffered the scourge of phylloxera. It was a drivingforce from the very start; the founder, Domingo Fernández, introduced not just French equipment and expertise but also electricity tothe Alto Jahuel region, where the winery is still based. As Chile’s second largest owner of vineyards, Santa Rita can draw on a greatdiversity of terroir, where the various grape varieties can be matched to the soil and climate of individual regions. The three winemakers make the most of Santa Rita’s exceptional resource in their comprehensive range. Gran Hacienda expressesthe pristine varietal character of Chilean fruit; selected vineyard sites give the Reserva wines greater intensity and structure. TheMedalla Real Cabernet is a single-estate wine, bringing added focus and terroir character. The range is crowned with Casa Real; froma single vineyard planted in the 1950s, it ranks amongst Chile’s very greatest wines.
VINA SANTA LUZ-LUIS FELIPE EDWARDSLuis Felipe Edwards are a rising star in Chile, one of a very small number still expanding, their judicious acquisition of vineyards hasallowed them to make great wines at all levels. For an entry level range Santa Luz is full of varietal character, from zingy Sauvignon tomeaty Cabernet.

LAPOSTOLLELapostolle is owned by the Marnier-Lapostolle family (of Grand Marnier fame), and since the winery’s foundation in 1994 has pursuedan uncompromising approach to quality. Their objective is as simple as it is ambitious: to create world-class wines using Frenchexpertise and the superb terroirs of Chile. The Lapostolle holdings consist of three vineyards, each in a different region and each chosen specifically for its affinity to certaingrape varieties: Casablanca for Chardonnay and Pinot; Requinoa for Syrah, Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet; Apalta for Merlot,Cabernet, Carmenère and Semillon. Conversion to biodynamic viticulture is almost complete, and reflects the obsessive attention todetail that already pervades Lapostolle. Not only is the fruit hand-harvested at night, but much of it is hand-destemmed, to ensure itbegins fermentation in immaculate condition.

VINA SANTA HELENA
BODEGA NORTONBodega Norton is a winery founded in the Mendoza area of Argentina. It was created in 1985 by English engineer Sir Edmund JamesPalmer Norton. The first production came from French imported vines. At Bodega Norton, vineyards are divided into small parcels that enable the work and individual tracking to achieve their maximumpotential. Due to the soil, age and type of plant differences within each parcel, this system enables the making of a "wine project" forevery parcel. The Finca la Colonia range highlights the key varietals grown on the estates, of especial mention are those signatureArgentinean grapes of Torrontes and Malbec. The Coleccion range are more structured wines from better quality fruit, whilst thePrivada is one of Argentina’s great fine wines, extremely well scored and awarded.

ARGENTINA
FINCA PERDRIELPerdriel is a single vineyard owned by Norton, but such is the quality they keep these wines separate and bottled in their own right.
They show a more savoury character, with spice and dark fruit with great concentration found from the high altitude and long ripening
the fruit receives.
MASI TUPUNGATOMasi are world famous in their homeland of Veneto, but are also turning heads for their Argentinean venture. The wines are a hybrid
of Venetian techniques and Argentinean soul. The reds involve drying the grapes, ripasso style for Passo Doble and full appassimento
style for Corbec, an homage to Masi’s award winning Amarone.
FINCA DECERODecero means from scratch reflecting the fact that this is a new project. The vineyard is exceptionally high at over 3000m, with a considerablediurnal temperature range. The winery is ultra modern, gravity fed and in both vineyard and winery organic practices are followed. The winesare a huge success, combining concentration with some dark fruits. You will struggle to find a better Malbec in Argentina.

DE BORTOLI-SOUTH EAST AUSTRALIADe Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928. The coupleemigrated to Australia from Northern Italy, from mountain villages at the foothills of the Italian Alps, near the historic town of Asolo. One of Australia’s ‘founding families’ they are extremely well regarded. Their signature wine is of course the Noble One, a botryrisedSemillon made to rival any of the great sweet wines of the world.
EVANS WINE COMPANY-NEW SOUTH WALESLen Evans was a real character and he would expect nothing less from wines bearing his name that they be similar, a snapshot of Australia in wine form.

CAPERCAILLIE, HUNTER VALLEYThis was established in the Hunter Valley by Alasdair and Trish Sutherland in late 1995 when they built a boutique modern winery onan excellent 20 year old vineyard. Alasdair being Scottish born, reflects his heritage in the very name 'Capercaillie'. It is the Gaelicname given to the black woodlands grouse, native to the pine forests of Scotland. Each of the wines carry a Scottish theme with theCeilidh and the Clan amongst the names.

AUSTRALIA
YALUMBA,BAROSSA,SOUTH AUSTRALIAYalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seekinga new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel namedhis patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". 160 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grownin size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over. They exploit the full range of terroir for their wines; full bodied Barossa reds and delicate aromatics from Eden Valley as well as someexemplary sticky wines.

REDBANK,VictoriaRedbank is based in the cool Pyrenees Mountains (of Australia, not Europe!) and is a small winery run by husband and wife team,Neill and Sally Robb. They are listed as distinguished by the influential Langtons classification.
PEWSEY VALE, Eden ValleyPewsey Vale is a single vineyard in Eden Valley originally planted by the German settlers. It is no surprise therefore to learn thatRiesling is the grape and it grows here with excellent aplomb. Parallel to the Barossa valley but considerably cooler as it has moreelevation, it suits aromatics perfectly. These are textbook Aussie Riesling, bone dry full of citrus and stone fruit. The Contours is drawnfrom the oldest part of the vineyard (following the contours of the hill rather than terraced) and has a minimum of five years bottle age.It shows much more developed characteristics of honey and the signature kerosene note.
HEGGIES VINEYARD, Eden ValleyThis is another single estate previously farmed by a man named Heggie. Nowadays it is an homage to Burgundy; they have beenworking extremely hard on their Chardonnay. Burgundian clones, well seasoned French oak for elegance, it is a complex wine withmany layers. The Riesling speaks of the German herritage of the region, a botrytis affected wine; big on pure fruit and complex honeyand caramel notes, much more delicate than the big muscats of Rutherglen!
JIM BARRY, Clare ValleyThis eponymous estate hardly needs an introduction. In the Armagh, he has created one of Australia’s best fine wines. A fraction ofthe price but big on flavour is the McRae Wood, a vineyard planted with cuttings from the Armagh vineyard. With this wine there isalso a Museum Release to show it can age incredibly well. The Lodge Hill are core wines, showing the bright Clare style: minty fruityShiraz and crisp zingy Riesling. Some years ago, Jim purchased land in Coonawara, it turned out that this vineyard had a cricket stripin the middle, hence the Cover Drive. There is also now a white partner in the Silly Mid On.

AUSTRALIA
THE ABERDEEN WINE COMPANY, South East Australia The philosophy behind Angus The Bull is to create a unique and innovative wine that provides an ideal accompaniment to primebeef. Each year the most promising parcels are blended from premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from a number ofoutstanding wine regions across Victoria and South Australia.
TORBRECK ,Barossa Valley‘I named the wine Torbreck after a forrest in Scotland where I worked as a lumberjack’ Dave Powell said after he started thebusiness in 1994. Dave loves the intense, rich, Rhone-like flavours that come from old-vines and the fact that Shiraz and Grenacheare the mainstay red grapes of the Northern and Southern Rhone often draws comparison. Torbreck doesn't only make red winesthough. They have Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne planted on their winery block which is blended to make a white wine.
EARTHWORKS, BarossaA collaboration from two main vineyards, the wines are classic Barossa. Big and bold with superb concentration.
RUNNING with BULLSRobert Hill Smith spent a vintage in Spain and was fascinated by the Tempranillo grape. Also recognising the similar terroir in hot &
dry South Australia he seeked to create his own version. Using seasoned oak from Yalumba’s own cooperage, the wine has bright
berry fruit with subtle vanilla flavours.
VASSE FELIX, Margeret River, Western AustraliaMargaret River was a poor dairy town before Vasse Felix set up here. The maritime climate here is different to much of the rest ofAustralia’s winemaking zones. Parallels have been drawn to the climate of Bordeaux and the wines made here are similar. Ofparticular note are the premium wines made here, the Heytsbury wines. A selection of the best vineyard parcels, then a furtherselection of the best barrels from those wines ensure this is the pinnacle of the Vasse Felix range. The white is like a rich burgundy,Meursault perhaps, whilst the red blend combines heady fruit with savoury spice and full of complexity.

MOSS WOOD, Margeret River, Western AustraliaA stunning new addition to the list this year. This winery is highly sought after and vintages frequently sell out early. Based in thepremium region of Margaret River, the Bordeaux varieties excel, Cabernet and Merlot for reds and Sauvignon & Semillon for thewhites. Their Pinot noir is actually grown on the opposite side of the country, Mornington Peninsula south of Melbourne. This isAustralia’s burgundy and the wine shows similar complexity and purity.
NAUTILUS ESTATENautilus is a small estate dedicated to excellence. They have just completed their Pinot only winery to allow them to concentrateon each separate parcel and create the best wine. The Sauvignon is head and shoulders above most other, slightly softer butpacking in lots of flavour: elegance is the key. The other whites are a joy, soft plump Pinot Gris and excellent, complexChardonnay. Expect great things to continue to come out of Nautilus.
HIDDEN BAY, Sauvignon BlancSauvignon Blanc still rules the roost in New Zealand and Pinot Noir is undoubtedly king of the reds. These are excellent entry level
examples showing bright primary fruit and lots of pzazz. Of particular note are the Stoneburn wines, made by the talented Jane
Hunter these show great complexity and are huge value for money.
NEW ZEALAND
HUNTERS, MarlboroughWhen Irishman Ernie Hunter arrived in New Zealand in 1979 Marlborough had not even been considered as a potential wine growingregion. The land was primarily used for farming: growing lucerne, barley and grazing sheep.Nowadays there is barely a sheep to be seen and vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see. Hunters were one of the founders ofthe region, and this means they have prime land in the heart of the region. The Sauvignon and Pinot are well established and verywell awarded, but the rest of the range are equally worth seeking out.

KLEINKLOOF, PAARL
SOUTH AFRICA
COOPERS CREEKCoopers Creek was established in the heart of the Huapai and Kumeu wine region by Andrew and Cynthia Hendry in 1980. Locatedabout 35km north west of Auckland, it is one of the most picturesque wine estates in the region. They have an extensive rangeincluding some unusual and pioneering grape varieties, look no further than the Arneis as evidence for this. The wines are big onelegance, you will find the sauvignon cleaner than many, and the Pinot more of an homage to Burgundy than the sweet fruity stylemore often found in Marlborough.

DELHEIM ESTATE, StellenboschDelheim’s origins as a wine estate go back to the 1930s when it was purchased by Hans Otto Hohsenhein and his wife Deli (hence‘Delheim’, for ‘Deli’s home’). Delheim’s Cellar, situated in the Simonsberg close to Stellenbosch is owned and run by the Sperlingfamily. With Spatz Sperling, nephew of the founders, at the helm, the farm produces a wide range of internationally acclaimed wines.Their philosophy has, and always will, be to embrace The Cape’s wine growing traditions whilst always looking to innovate. Delheimhave recently been honoured for their laudable conservation commitment to the Cape Floral Kingdom’s biodiversity.
KLEIN CONSTANTIA, ConstantiaThe verdant Constantia valley, home to Klein Constantia Estate, is the oldest, most enduring vineyard region in the Cape, firstproducing wine in 1689. Family owned and run, Klein Constantia’s philosophy is founded on quality rather than quantity, reflected inthe wines regularly inviting accolades, both locally and internationally. Of especial note is the sweet wine, the Vin de Constance. Thiswine has been noted throughout history by such nobles and aristocracy as Napoleon, Fredrick the Great, Bismark and British Kingsand often chosen over Yquem, Tokaji and Madeira. It is referenced in works of Dickens and Jane Austen; indeed old bottles still existin cellars and command top prices whenever they appear at auction.
BUITENVERWACHTING, ConstantiaWhile a tongue twister to say it is well worth the effort to learn & order this wine! Buitenverwachting means beyond all expectation, and was established in 1796, the same year as Cockburns of Leith. Part of the very first vineyard planted in South Africa, theyproduce wines that are very European in their sophistication and unrivalled for their value for money.
KANU, StellenboschThe Kanu is a mythical bird of promise; according to the story, all who fall under its shadow will be blessed with a bountiful harvest.
What is more than legend is the quality of the wines, in particular the Chenin Blanc is regarded as the best value for quality example
coming out of South Africa.

WATERFORD,StellenboschWaterford was established in 1998 with the intention of producing the very best wines in South Africa. A joint venture betweenJeremy Ord and Kevin Arnold, they are well on their way to achieving this goal. The Kevin Arnold Shiraz is testament to this beingright up there with the best of the New World. Dark fruit laced with spice and hints of mocca, Great with food. The Jem is theflagship of the Estate taking 10 years in the making to produce a world class wine.
CLOOF, DarlingIf the coastal areas of Constantia and Stellenbosch resemble temperate French wine regions, Darling’s fierce climate has more incommon with Spain. Gnarled bush vines push their roots down eight metres into the soil in search of moisture, while the summer sunimpels the grapes to concentrated ripeness. This is not white wine territory, but the results for reds are brilliant: heady blends of fruitand savoury flavours, firm ripe tannins, and fresh acidity preserved by the cool night-time temperatures. Cloof is an exemplaryambassador for this exciting region, both for the quality of its wines and its overall approach: the winery has just earned the coveted‘Biodiversity Champion’ title for its commitment to preserving the local environment.
ANTHONJ RUPERTAt the heart of Anthonij Rupert Wines lies the fundamental belief that the source of supreme wine quality lies in the land; that aspecific terroir, with soil and climate working together to capture the essence of each particular grape variety, dictates the style of winethat speaks powerfully of the highest quality and most genuine character. In the cellars, the fruit from the vines are treated with thehighest level of care through the winemaking process to create a wine that is true to the natural characteristics of the grapes and thevines from which they came

WILLIAMS AND HUMBERTSWilliams & Humbert winery was founded in 1877 by Sir Alexander Williams, a great admirer and connoisseur of sherry products, andArthur Humbert, a specialist in international relations. Since then they have preserved part of the original wines and brandies (soleras)in high quality oak casks. These soleras are the base of the development and ageing of every sherry and brandy produced atBodegas. The Dry Sack, Winters Tale and Walnut Brown are famous names of Britain’s Sherry drinking heritage. The older soleras areincredible, and given the fashions also incredible value for the quality of wine within.

FORTIFIED WINES - SHERRY
LA GUITASpain’s best-selling Sherry is this dry, tangy, brilliantly refreshing Manzanilla. At 15% alcohol, it is no stronger than many a red wine, and served well chilled is a great accompaniment to olives, nuts and seafood. “Guita” is Spanish for cord, and each bottle has oneattached to its neck. However, the brand name “La Guita” comes from the fact that the founder always asked those interested inbuying it: “Do you have guita?”, “Guita” being an old Spanish slang word for money. People thus began to call the winery by thename of “La Guita”, and it was officially registered in 1908.
LUSTAU-SOLERA RESERVAEmilio Lustau S.A. was founded in 1896 by Don José Ruiz-Berdejo. It was a humble beginning: Don José, a secretary in the courts ofjustice, used to cultivate the vineyards at his estate where he stored and aged the wines and afterwards sold them to the largerexporting companies. He was in fact what is known as an “almacenista” The company’s commitment to tiny producers continues tothis day, bottling small runs from one producer, rather than blending together to produce consistency they celebrate individuality.

MALT WHISKY
THE DALMORE RIVERS COLLECTIONLuxury malt The Dalmore has launched a collection of four bespoke whiskies to raise much needed funds to conserve Scotland’smost important salmon rivers. It’s the first time the Dee, Spey, Tay and Tweed trustees have worked together with one partner to raise funds to protect some ofScotland’s finest sport and tourist attractions. In partnership with Whyte and Mackay they have created the award-winning brand andthe creation of four very different whiskies, each one crafted to represent and celebrate the uniqueness of each location. A donation ismade from each bottle sold to the individual River Trusts for future conservation projects.
PINNEAU DES CHARENTES
CHATEAU DE BEAULONSuperbly well awarded Chateau that is very well known in France, but more boutique status in Britain. Full of gold medals the range isbreathtaking, drawn from their vineyards in the Cognac region. They also produce Pineau des Charentes, that beautiful blend ofgrape must and spirit making a perfect aperitif.
COGNAC - CHATEAU DE BEAULON
CALVADOS, ROGER GROULTRoger Groult is one of the finest distillers in Calvados. He creates his spirits in traditional copper pot stills, using over fifty differentapple varieties to produce Calvados of unmatched flavour and complexity. The same methods of production have been maintainedfor four generations. The apples are selected from the family's own orchards and those in the immediate vicinity in order to conservethe regional style.Groult does not believe in vintage dating his Calvados but rather in blending various years to make a more complex spirit. The agedesignation of each cuvee represents the youngest spirit in the blend.
ARMAGNAC - JANNEAUJanneau are one of the oldest grand producers in Armagnac, and one of the few Negociants to carry out distillation, maturation andbottling all within the region. The Janneau VSOP can claim proudly that it is the most awarded Armagnac in the world.
