The Scarecrow story begins in a patch of earth with a fabled past.  The J.J. Cohn Estate, where Scarecrow grapes are born, borders what was once the legendary vineyard of Inglenook winemaker Gustave Niebaum, whose plantings blanketed more than 1,000 acres of Napa Valley at the close of the 19th century.   John Daniel Jr. took the helm at Inglenook in 1939, determined to restore the label to pre-Prohibition standing and produce world-class Bordeaux-style wines. In 1945, Daniel convinced his neighbor, J.J. Cohn to plant eighty acres of Cabernet Vines on the 180-acre parcel Cohn had purchased a few years prior.  Daniel promised to buy his grapes, so Cohn planted vines.  The rest, as they say, is history. 

J.J. Cohn grapes are highly sought-after in part because Cohn bucked the trend, begun in the mid-1960s, of replacing vines planted on St. George rootstock with the supposedly superior AxR#I hybrid.  Over time, vines grafted onto this new stock proved highly vulnerable to phylloxera.  But by then virtually all of the old St. George vines in Napa had been destroyed.  Only the original 1945 J.J. Cohn vines survived.  These highly prized “Old Men” continue to produce uncommonly rich fruit – the hallmark of Scarecrow wine.

Corra, a Celtic deity representing prophecy, symbolizes this small brand’s forward-looking perspective. Showing herself on earth in the form of a crane, Corra takes wing and lifts her shadow to life.

After graduating from the University of California-Davis, Jim returned to Napa Valley to begin a career that would lead him to become one of Napa Valley’s most sought-after viticulturists. For over 40 years, he has been dedicated to his craft, producing premium wine grapes using traditional and contemporary hand-farming methods. Jim has planted and managed many prominent vineyards in the valley, including Hundred Acre, Grace Family, Checkerboard, Blankiet, Revana, Harbison Estate, Gandona Estate, The Vineyardist, Keever, Husic, Pillar Rock, Dr. Stephens, and more.

On a rocky knoll that once lay beneath the surface of a crater lake, formed by the cataclysmic eruption of a young volcano, lies Rewa Vineyards. The site’s 9 million years of geologic history guides today’s viticultural and winemaking practices, honouring the dissected topography of volcanic tuff, river-worn cobble and volcanic bedrock.

Handcrafted by renowned winemaker Celia Welch from grapes grown by Mike Wolf, Rewa Vineyards’ small lot wines reflect the specificity of its place in Coombsville.

Grapes are harvested by hand and delivered to the winery where clusters are sorted, removing damaged or blemished ones. Individual berries are carefully chosen by optical sorter, ensuring perfection of each grape that comprises Rewa Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dana is Sanskrit for “the Spirit of Generosity.” We express a profound appreciation for those that have worked the soil before us, as we build on the foundations laid by previous generations of vintners. Nestled at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains, Dana Estates is the third winery to occupy this piece of vineyard land in the heart of the famed Rutherford Bench. Proprietor Hi Sang Lee worked carefully with winemakers Philippe Melka and Cameron Vawter to insure that the space and facilities would enable the production of consistently world class wines.

VHR Cabernet is an estate-grown wine of place, the culmination of the Phillips family’s evolution from grapegrowing to winemaking over three generations. Years of traversing vineyard rows and caring for each of Vine Hill Ranch’s seven blocks have imbued a deep understanding of our estate vineyard’s unique characteristics.

Every vintage we work hard to tell the story of these chosen vineyards through the medium of wine. Our efforts hopefully reflect the character in some way, of every person and every vineyard site – the shared experiences of that year.

Our appellation blends are inspired by a desire to capture the specific beauty of each of these growing regions, which we feel are among the best in the world for Pinot Noir. Kosta Browne produces four appellation Pinot Noirs from the foggy Russian River Valley, diverse Sonoma Coast, powerful Sta. Rita Hills and chilly Santa Lucia Highlands, as well as one Chardonnay from Russian River Valley.

The Observations series wines come straight from the heart of winemaking and represent an unrestricted approach in the cellar inspired by exceptional vineyard sources. From well-known and highly sought-after vineyards to those with an unexpected, intangible factor that must be tasted to be understood, each site, row or barrel has captured our winemaker’s attention in a unique way. These are wines of distinctive quality, unique expression, and rare availability.

From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today. Fundamental to that tradition was the early decision to focus on the production of Merlot. Though many Napa Valley wineries were using Merlot as a blending grape in the late seventies, few were exploring the potential of this varietal as a stand-alone wine. A great fan of Merlot since traveling to St. Emilion and Pomerol, Dan Duckhorn felt that this elegant varietal was under appreciated in North America. "I liked the softness, the seductiveness, the color," says Dan, "the fact that it went with a lot of different foods; it wasn't so bold, didn't need to age so long, and it had this velvety texture to it. It seemed to me to be a wonderful wine to just enjoy. I became enchanted with Merlot.”

It is a family-owned and operated winery, producing exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon from the family’s six acres of rocky, hillside vineyards. We are enchanted by our vineyards because they really are nestled into the hillsides and are growing in loamy, well-drained soil that’s more rock than anything else. One of the vineyard managers suggested that we are engaging in hydroponics farming - rocks, water and roots but no soil. In addition to the six acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, we planted one-third of an acre to Sauvignon Blanc. The Cabernet Sauvignon consists of four clones and two different rootstocks. Each was chosen specifically for the block(s) where it is growing. We are very pleased with the planting decisions by our vineyard management company, Barbour Vineyards, and the wonderful fruit that is being produced.

Then, in a now-historic blind tasting, a panel of eminent French judges swirled, sniffed, and sipped an array of the fabled white Burgundies of France and a small sampling of upstart Chardonnays from the Napa Valley. When their scores were tallied, the French judges were shocked: they had chosen the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, crafted by Mike Grgich, as the finest white wine in the world. Mon Dieu! The results stunned the international wine establishment and immediately earned Mike a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in the world. Today, we remain committed to making distinctive wines with quality, consistency and longevity. We are proud that world leaders such as Presidents Reagan and Clinton, Queen Elizabeth II and French President François Mitterrand chose our wines to serve at state dinners, but we are just as proud that every single day discriminating wine drinkers count on Grgich Hills to turn their own dinners into special occasions. We treat each of our six different wines as a special child, carefully nurturing their development and character. Our pride and joy is our Chardonnay, an elegant example of the varietal displaying rich flavors and exquisite balance. When Raymond T. Duncan first visited the Napa Valley in the late 1960s, he was taken by the region’s rugged beauty. He was also wise enough to understand the potential of the fledgling wine industry. In the 1970's, he began to buy land in both Napa and Alexander Valleys with the goal of planting vineyards. But with his home and business in Colorado and no viticulture expertise of his own, Ray approached Justin Meyer, whom he’d met through mutual friends, and asked him to plant and manage the vineyards. Then working at Christian Brothers, Justin agreed with one condition: in addition to managing the vineyards, he wanted to create a winery that would forever raise the standards of California wine. The year was 1972, and Silver Oak Cellars began. Ray and Justin had a bold and unconventional vision for their winery. Rather than producing six or seven varietals, they would devote all their resources to producing a single wine – Cabernet Sauvignon. Our family has been dealing with vine growing and wine making in the Langhe area for over 150 years, and in the last 20 years also in Montalcino and Bolgheri. We consider each single vineyard as a precious independent organism, a universe where different forms of life coexist. The purpose of our work is to understand, protect and grow the life enclosed in every vineyard for the exclusive production of our wines. That is why, in order to take care of the soil and minimize our action in the vineyards, we have developed different projects, such as composting, the absence of chemicals and pesticides, as well as the preservation of the most ancient vineyards which represent an inestimable heritage to be safeguarded inside our nurseries. As in vine growing, our wine making is also inspired by the respect for nature. Together with our long-standing collaborators, we act as the custodians of the land’s beauty and culture. There are parallels between Tuscan Sangiovese and Piedmontese Nebbiolo. For more than 150 years these two indigenous grape varieties have produced Italy’s most distinctive wines, known for their uniqueness, their history and their prestige. The parish church, or pieve, of S. Restituta stands on the property and gives the estate its name. Wine has been made here since the 12th century. Pieve S. Restituta produces three Brunello di Montalcino wines: Rennina, Sugarille and Brunello di Montalcino.

Ca’Marcanda is our winery in the Bolgheri area, a project that was born in 1996, propelled by Angelo’s ambition to challenge himself with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. In Piedmont, we have been focusing on Nebbiolo for more than 150 years; however, the interest in working with Cabernet Sauvignon grew already in 1978, with the creation of Darmagi. The project of a blend was fascinating like a photographer who for a long time worked in black and white and starts to discover colours.

The Pio Cesare winery was founded in 1881 by our great great-grandfather Cesare Pio. He was one of the very first wine producers to believe in the great potential and quality of Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and in the other great wines of Piemonte. Cesare Pio, in the second portion of 1800s, was among the very first winemakers to produce these wines with a philosophy that was dedicated to the terroir and the strictest quality of the wine. For five generations, the Pio Cesare family has been producing traditional Piemontese wines in its ancient cellars, located in the center of the town of  Alba.. The cellars walls date back to the Roman Empire period , 50 B.C. Recently, significant investments have been made to rebuild and  restructure the cellars and the winery's facilities. Pio Cesare owns more than 50 hectares (130 acres) of vineyards, located in the most highly rated and better exposed areas. Within the Barolo region, the "Ornato" Estate and the "Colombaro" Vineyard ( in Serralunga d’Alba), the "Gustava" Estate ( in Grinzane Cavour), the "Roncaglie" (in La Morra) and "Ravera" (Barolo- Novello). Within the Barbaresco territory, the "Il Bricco" Estate and the "San Stefanetto" Vineyard in Treiso  Other selected vineyards are located in the communes of Diano d’Alba, Sinio and Trezzo. In addition to is own vineyards, Pio Cesare has fostered long-term relationships with growers for several generations and manages all aspects of viticulture in these vineyards. These growers have been selling grapes to the family for generations.

In 1989 Cantina Valpolicella Negrar started an extensive Quality Project that pinpointed locations particularly suited to vineyards. This in-depth study was conducted alongside wine-growers in order to produce high quality grapes. Over the years their meticulous work has enabled the production of new cru wines and the Domìni Veneti label. Domìni Veneti is the name used for the best wines in the winery’s range. These wines are named after the lands ruled by the Serenissima Republic of Venice in the 16th century when it was at the height of its power. The Valpolicella area came under its rule around that time. Today, this golden age is reflected in the quality and reputation of the wines in the Domìni Veneti range. As a result of this longterm project, Cantina Valpolicella Negrar now offers its customers all over the world exquisite wines that capture the hallmarks of this region.

Great wines do not originate in wineries, but in vineyards. This is the concept at the base of the whole winemaking process of Valentina Cubi. The unique composition of our lands rich in ‘scheletro’ (very fine gravel) and clay, a stone’s throw from Lake Garda, bestows our fresh and elegant wines an exclusive character, featuring natural fruity and spiced notes. Our terraced vineyards are dry farmed, and certified organic, aided by the fresh breeze from the lake.

Whether tasting our Chianti Classico 2013 is your first experience with Dievole or you are a long-term lover of the brand, one thing is certain: Dievole has been producing wine since 1090 and the company has been continuously evolving in the past few years. A look at past labels tells a story of change, but also consistency. In 1985, an ornate, heraldic label in black and white graced our Chianti Classico. The name refers to the closest vineyard to the hamlet “Colombaio”, a heritage from the noble Family of Malavolti from Siena, former owners of Dievole property for several centuries. The later 80s and 90s brought in a new era – the Dievole logo and a graphic label that put emphasis on the wine itself. The gold background – which, over the years has been solid, striped or mottled – represents the land itself, the terroir of this special Chianti Classico wine. At times, the label reads “Villa Dievole” rather than just “Dievole”, putting an emphasis on the hospitality of this place, something it has always offered. 2013 marks a new era for Dievole, a  Renaissance  of the winery in which these themes all come together: heritage and land, hospitality and people. The Chianti Classico 2013 is the first Dievole wine to fully communicate the uniqueness of this terroir and Dievole’s respect for it. The label reflects the wine within, and the new production philosophy: elegant, fresh and complex with beautiful aromas that reflect our ancient territory. It is the Most Classic of Chianti Classico.

Clos de l’Obac is a wine of extraordinary power, structure and complexity. These characteristics are the result of the diversity of orientations and altitudes of seven vineyards located around the town of Gratallops, and planted with vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Garnacha and Cariñena planted over 50 years ago. In 1979 Carles Pastrana and Mariona Jarque recovered the family winemaking tradition, and started off on a long adventure aimed to rescue the old Carthusian wines in the heart of the lands that were once under the dominion of the priors of Scala Dei, a monastery located in the Catalan region of El Priorat. Carles and Mariona created the properties of Clos de l’Obac and Miserere, replanting vines along the banks of the river Siurana in the southern pre-coastal area of Catalonia, and established the Clos de l’Obac Winery.

Marqués de Murrieta´s foundation is linked to the origins of Rioja wines, since Luciano Murrieta produced the first Rioja wine in 1852, and was also the first to export his wines. Luciano, appointed Marquis by the King Amadeo of Savoy thanks to his work in Rioja, travelled to Bordeaux to learn the winemaking techniques that he later introduced in Spain. Leeuwin Estate, one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district, consistently produces wines that rank with the world's finest. In 1972, following an extensive search for the area most suitable to produce the best varietal wines in Australia, legendary American winemaker, Robert Mondavi, identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard. Originally a cattle farm, Leeuwin Estate evolved, under the direction of Denis and Tricia Horgan, with Robert Mondavi acting as consultant and mentor. A nursery was planted in 1974 and the initial vineyards were deep-ploughed, deep-ripped, emptied of stone, planned, pegged, measured, marked and eventually planted by hand over a five year period from 1975. Featuring state-of-the art facilities, the winery building was opened in 1978, celebrating with a trial vintage. Leeuwin enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979, and was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay in an international blind tasting.

Hervé Kerlann still has vivid childhood memories of hours spent playing in the Maison Peyrat-Chèze’s family cellars on the Quai du Priourat in Libourne. His maternal great-great-grandfather, Antoine Chèze, was a man with a strong entrepreneurial streak, like many of his wine trader friends from the Corrèze (Moueix, Borie, Manoux, etc). Like them, he was both a wine trader and vineyard owner, possessing around a hundred hectares of vines and several renowned wine domaines.

Chateau Du Breuil was classified Cru Bourgeois in 1932, and having been established in the 6th century, remains the oldest vineyard in the Medoc region. Soils are clay and limestone, and the blend consists of roughly half-and-half Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small percentage of Petite Verdot.

Philippe Nunes really blossomed when he moved to the right bank of the Garonne, where he was able to unite all the values dear to him: a parochial focus, the importance of family and the rich variety in the terroirs on this bank. His ambition to produce his own wine in an appellation that he was fond of came to fruition in 2005, when he acquired Clos Bertineau in Montagne Saint-Emilion.
