Marilyn Becker has been undergo-ing a challenging course ofchemotherapy treatments at BackusHospital since being diagnosed withbreast and lymph node cancer lastyear. But through it all, she alwaysfelt better knowing that no matter

how hard thingsgot, she still had aroof over herhead.

But even thatsense of security began unravelinglast month when Becker received anotice from the City of Norwich in-forming that the roof on her housewas in bad disrepair. The citation saidshe had 60 days to have the roof re-paired, or she would be subject tofines and other penalties.

Becker, who is 64 and lives on herown, did not know how she would beable to come up with the money tocomply with the order. She confided

her situation to Rosemarie Neilson, the Backus Hospital social workerwho has been helping Becker withher care.

Neilson in turn decided to contactlocal roofer George Denison, who haddone work on Neilson’s roof in thepast and who had a reputation forcharitable work. It was a few weeksbefore the Christmas holiday whenNeilson spoke to the roofer, andDenison decided he would go toBecker’s home to see what he coulddo.

“I got over there and I could see theroof was in bad shape,” Denison said.“I knew this lady was going through ahard time, so I thought I would helpher out in the spirit of the holidays.”

Denison told Becker he would re-place her roof free of charge.

“I couldn’t believe there were peo-ple like him still in the world,” Beckersaid about her meeting with Denison.

“When he told me what he was goingto do, I was in seventh heaven andbeyond. I still am.”

Denison even let Becker pick froman array of shingle colors and de-signs to find the right choice for herroof. The tiles are set to arrive anyday now, and Denison said he plansto replace the roof within the nextcouple of weeks.

“I try to do something like this acouple of times a year,” he said. “If allof us do something like this, just alittle bit, it can make the world a bet-ter place.”

Neilson said she never expectedDenison to make such a generousoffer, but knew he was an honest andcompassionate man.

“I figured he would take a look andlet her know the situation with herroof, but that was above and beyond,”she said. “I’m so happy for Marilyn, she needs this right now.”
