Fawn: Young deer are born scentless to prevent them from being noticed by predators. They spend most of the first few weeks of their life in hiding. When they are born, they are covered in white spots – about 300 of them! It is common for fawns to be born as twins. Wild Geranium The name geranium is derived from the Greek word geranos which means crane, in reference to the shape of the fruiting part of the plant. They form long, narrow seed capsules that split to release the seeds. They have beautiful delicate lavender or pink flowers and grow to a height of up to two feet. Wild geraniums are perennial plants, meaning they live for more than two years. The root system produces rhizomes, underground stalks that allow them to form colonies. They bloom from mid to late spring for about a month. The nectar and pollen attract a variety of bees and flies and provide an important early source of pollen. Now that you know something about wild geraniums, create and color your own flower! Sally Manzara Interpretive Nature Center sminc-lake-elmo.org
