and rituals

Page 2: Why we do the Grihapravesh ceremony

• Grihapravesh ceremony is an important ritual which most of us perform when we move into a new apartment that we buy or even into a rented apartment.

• While some people ardently believe in it, for some its just something that their parents force them to do.

• Through this, we aim to shed some light on the original meaning and the reasons and significance of the various rituals.

Grihapravesh - meaning

• Griha Pravesh literally means entering the house.

• An auspicious time is picked when the new owners/ tenants and their family members enter the new house.

• This ritual is believed to drive away any ill effects of negative influence from planets or evil forces.

Reasons for doing Grihapravesh

• The puja’s or homas done during Grihapravesh are believed to ward off three specific types of doshas or sins:

• Digging the earth because of which many worms may have died.

• Cutting of wood – Nature is getting affected.• Breaking of stones – It is believed that evil spirits

might have resided in the stones.

• In case of rented properties, it is believed that properties that are empty for a long time are occupied by evil spirits – hence the pujas to restore positive energy

The Rituals

• Grihapravesh is typically done after the doors and windows are installed in the house.

• The Nakshatra of the Wife/ Female Family head who is going to live in the house is considered before fixing the date.

• The Pooja’s that are performed during these functions include Gho Pooja, Ganapathi Pooja,

Punyaha Pooja, Kalasa Pooja, Vaastu Shanthi,

Navagraha Homam and Lakshmi Kubera

Homam

• Even the atheists will accept that there is some rationale behind the pujas – the cutting of the trees/ worms etc

• All in all look at it as a function to invite family and friends into your new home and begin your journey in the new house with their good wishes and blessings.
