WYMHS: Power Up!

World Plumbing Day March 11 was World Plumbing Day! Many people in developed countries throughout the world take plumbing for granted. They simply turn on a

tap or faucet and obtain clean water. Flushing toilets are standard in many countries. However, little thought is given to the engineering expertise

provided by plumbers that ensures these systems operate as intended. Equally, few people appreciate the consequences of bad plumbing systems. In

developing countries on the other hand, plumbing is either nonexistent or at best very basic. People suffer serious health consequences, and millions

of people die as a result of lack of access to clean water and in effective sanitation. Mr. Solomon’s Academic Center Environmental Science class decided to address this issue. These students learned about how our Chicago water is

cleaned, and how technologies can be introduced to the developing world to improve water quality. Likewise, the 7th graders competed in the

World Plumbing Council’s International Poster Design Contest. You can learn more about activities, view a calendar, read about past World

Plumbing Days, download fact sheets, view a video address by the World Plumbing Council Chairman and much more at

www.worldplumbingday.org. Page 2

Latin Certamen In a recent Certamen Quiz Bowl, the following

students took first place prizes in the junior

high division: Olivia Harris, Edward Huang,

Anna Lee, Aryann Mei, Connor Szeto, and

Jamie Terrasi. The following students took second place in the

novice division: Allison Huske, Shannon

Keene, Michelle Milanov, Veronica Skital, and

Mayra Villanueva. Congratulations to the students, and many

thanks go out to their teacher Ms. Wender.

Inaugural Conference The Middle School Presidential Inaugural Con-

ference is held in Washington, D.C. every four

years in conjunction with the formal inaugura-

tion of the President and Vice President of the

United States. Dr. Kenner was recently notified that Ayanna

Fourte was chosen to attend this year's confer-

ence at the National 4-H Youth Conference

Center. More information can be found at

http://myinauguralscholar.com/ayanna.fourte. Congratulations Ayanna!

Hockey News The Newsletter has recently been notified of two local female standouts. Senior Hannah Zarecki,

a member of the AAA Mission hockey team, will continue her hockey career playing for the Har-

vard Crimson. She and her family were notified by Harvard Coach Katie Stone that she and the

team wanted Hannah to join their squad. Katie Stone is also the woman's USA hockey coach in

the 2014 Olympics. Harvard will work out for Hannah because she has learned to balance sports

with academics quite nicely. She has an A average here at Whitney Young, and has scored a 32

on the ACT. Her sister Grace, a sophomore, recently represented the United States in Under 18 Team competi-

tion in a series of games against Canada, and has participated in the U-18 World Championships

in Finland. Grace has a goal of playing in the Olympics, and will push hard to make the team in

as early as 2014. Good luck ladies!

NCWIT Shuya Gong was a winner of an National Center

for Women in Technology (NCWIT) Aspira-

tions Award. She was one of just twenty stu-

dents selected from the state of Illinois, and will

be honored at the UIC pavilion in April. Congratulations Shuya, and many thanks go out

to Dr. Mauer-Oats for his help in this matter.

Shot Put Senior Natalie Irmer has shattered the school's

record for shotput in Track & Field by two

whole feet. She did this on her very first throw

and meet of the season. Nice job Natalie, and congratulations to the

WY Girls Track & Field team.

IHSA Chess Champions Our powerhouse chess team recently won the Illinois

High School Association state championship in Peoria.

Under the guidance of Coach Paul Kash, we humbled

Stevenson, New Trier, and Hinsdale Central high

schools which took second, third, and fourth place

respectively. Four-time national champion Sam Schmakel, is a jun-

ior here at school, and is the highest rated player in

Illinois. He is flanked by thirteen other talented team

members. They are: Jimi Akintonde, Phuc Hoang,

Steven Horvath, Caelan Burke Kaiser, Ga Luang Liu,

Adrian Mui, Oliver Natarajan, Philip Parker-Turner,

Christopher Rupprecht, Charles Swan, Bob Tichy,

Mark Waechter, and Jinghui Xiong. The team will head to Nashville, Tennessee in April to

compete in the national tournament. Let's give them

our support. Go Dolphins!

Boys Swimming The varsity boys swim team had a very good

year. Our team took City four years straight, set

several city records, and placed second in sec-

tionals. City records were:

200 free - Mo Chavez 1:43:47*

100 free - Mo Chavez 47.18*

200 free relay - 1:30.10 - Tony Tremmel,

Dan Shumaker, Julian Escasa, and Mo Chavez

400 free relay - 3:17.49 - Spencer Stoneberg,

Seth Hughes, Julian Escasa, and Mo Chavez. In the 100 breast, Zach Stensland set a school

record at 1:02.04. Mo Chavez, Julian Escasa, and Zachary Sten-

sland were state qualifiers at sectionals, and

Coach Parro was named sectional Coach of the

Year. Congratulations to everyone involved. * Also a school record.

Golden Apple Officials from the Golden Apple

Foundation have notified Dr. Kenner

that Aliyah Turner and Geno Lewis

have been selected to be among the

135 members of the Golden Apple

Scholars of Illinois Class of 2013. Over 1,200 nominations were re-

ceived for this

year's program, so

to be selected is

quite a notable

achievement. This

competitive pro-

gram seeks the best

and the brightest of

Illinois youth that are interested in a

teaching career. Nice job!

Animal Expressions JadhaI Vazquez and Donna Li both received 1st place awards in their respective age categories in

the Animals Expressions Young Artist Contest sponsored by the Anti-Cruelty Society. Congratulations!

IIT Bridge Building Congratulations to the participants in the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Illinois Regional Bridge

Efficiency Competition. These students were selected as our school’s most efficient bridges from

over 250 bridges tested at the December Science Fair. On February 25, 2013, these builders perse-

vered and completed their final bridge designs at the IIT competition. Whitney Young Magnet High

School was well represented with Benjamin Benedict (efficiency of 2367), Alice Lee (efficiency of

1445), and Jonathan Damen (efficiency of 870) all placing in the top 15 builders in the state. Special

recognition goes to Benjamin Benedict for earning second place in the competition. Ben will repre-

sent Whitney Young Magnet High School and IIT at the International Bridge Contest to be held in

April. Thanks to Mr. Solomon, our Bridge Contest Coordinator and all the science teachers that assisted in

the bridge contest this year: Ms. Dudzik, Mr. Gallo, Mr. Kash, Ms. Marquez, and Ms. Virnich.

Dear Principal Kenner and Staff, I am delighted and honored to congratulate you and your school on being named to the 2012 Illinois Honor Roll. This recognition celebrates the

accomplishments of exemplary public schools across the state of Illinois. These awards are a direct result of your dedication to and passion for

educating the children of Chicago, and I extend my sincerest appreciation for your hard work and determination. While there are many rising stars across our District, none are shining brighter today than the 75 CPS schools that garnered 78 awards in this year’s

Honor Roll. Recognizing continued academic progress, the Honor Roll is divided into three different categories and each award has unique criteria

that best reflect the diverse circumstances of Illinois schools. State Superintendent of Education, Christopher A. Koch, today announced that 624 Illinois schools earned a total of 640 awards in the following

categories for the 2011-2012 school year: Spotlight Schools: Recognizes 105 high-poverty, high-performing schools that are beating the odds in overcoming the achievement gap. 18 CPS

schools received this award.

Academic Excellence Awards: 454 schools have sustained high performance over at least three years. 29 CPS schools were recognized with this

award.

Academic Improvement Awards: 81 schools are showing substantial improvement. 31 CPS schools were awarded this honor. We have much more work to do and I recognize each of our schools faces unique challenges. However, increased learning time for our children

through the Full School Day, our jump start to implementation of Common Core State Standards and by holding ourselves and our staff to the

highest standards, we are moving closer every day towards giving our children the rigorous, well-rounded education they need and deserve to be

successful in college, career and life. I am so proud of your achievements and I encourage you to continue setting the bar high for our students while striving to place your school again

on next year’s Illinois Honor Roll. Congratulations! Sincerely,

Barbara Byrd-Bennett

Chief Executive Officer, Chicago Public Schools

A/C Bridge Building Contest The Academic Center competed in the Whit-

ney Young Bridge Building Contest at the

Winter Family Night. The twist with the

contest this year was that one side of the

bridge was higher than the other. With their

usual Whitney Young excellence, our sev-

enth grade bridge builders constructed over

sixty bridges. The construction and testing of

model bridges promotes the study and appli-

cation of principles physics and also helps

students develop "hands on" skills through

bridge construction. By participating in the Bridge Building Com-

petition, students get a flavor of what it is to

be an Engineer, designing structures to a set

of specifications and then seeing them per-

form their function. Special thanks to Mr.

Solomon and Dr. Bloland for their support in

this project. A/C Bridge Contest Winners 2013 and their

efficiencies: 1st - Surya Lemke (1,025.69),

2nd - Reina Liang, Oona Winners (959.32),

3rd - Brendan Vaughan, Jimmy Ruan

(917.33), and 4th - Kaiann Nash, Audrey

Pettigrew (815.61). Well done!

Robotics Update First Tech Challenge (FTC) is designed for those who

want to compete head to head, using a sports model.

Teams of up to 10 students are responsible for design-

ing, building, and programming their robots to compete

in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit

is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using

a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, men-

tors, and volunteers, are required to develop strategy

and build robots based on sound engineering princi-

ples. Awards are given for the competition as for well

as for community outreach, design, and other real-

world accomplishments. Our FTC team #3216 recently competed in State finals,

scored well, but lost in the final playoff game leaving

then in 2nd place statewide. FTC team #4302 just re-

ceived word that J.C. Penny and Boeing offered a grant

to pay the $5000 entrance fee for spring competition in

April. FTC also has offered Chris Perez, Matt Sebek,

and Zac Stuart thousands in scholarships. Congratulations to the team and to its Coach, Ms.

Dudzik.

Counseling Department Update

Course programming is underway. This year, students were programmed in the following sequence: sophomores, juniors, then

freshmen. Meetings with counselors began February 11. The process is:

Students will receive a pass for their programming appointment through division.

Students come prepared with their completed 4/6 year plan signed by parent/guardian.

If changes are made during the appointment, parents will be notified by the counselor.

All students will have 7 periods with a period of Instructional Support available to all

students.

Scholarships and student opportunities, especially those for the summer, are available to our

students. These opportunities are advertised on the Counseling Department Edline page as

well as on http://www.wyoung.org in the Counseling Corner. New opportunities are added regularly, so keep checking back!

Seniors, just a reminder to complete your Financial Aid. If you have not completed your FAFSA or CSS form, go to https://

www.alltuition.com. This is an easy to use, all-in-one financial aid resource. This resource is receiving great reviews from the fami-

lies that have used it.

Juniors were introduced to Naviance during their long division in February. Juniors learned how to use the College-Match resources

on Naviance to find colleges and universities that match one's GPA, ACT/SAT scores, interests and needs. Juniors were also intro-

duced to the senior profile, which juniors should complete this summer. Preparing this spring and summer will help juniors be confi-

dent in their post-high school decisions as they enter their senior year.

Science Fair Results

Ms. Sherry is reporting that the following Whitney Young students won at the 63rd

Annual Chicago Public School Student Science Fair held on Sunday, March 24,

2013:

Alexander Pei Project Session

These students will represent Chicago Public Schools at the State Science Fair that

will be held May 3-4, 2013 at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Well done!

Hip Hop News More good news to share! The WY Pom Pon team

has won the city hip hop championship March 23,

2013. Congratulations to Coach Tucker and to the entire

team.

I Am She I Am SHE, a student organization at Whitney Young meant to unite and empower young women, is cur-

rently featured on the CPS website at http://cps.edu/Spotlight/Pages/Spotlight406.aspx. Ms. Rachel El-Amin, faculty sponsor, helped launch the club after being approached by a student who said

she wanted to start a group that would focus solely on issues affecting women, particularly teen girls. The

group's first major event was a Women's Art Expo – a colorful combination of music, dance, and visual

arts with lectures and discussion forums mixed in. Other projects of the "I Am She" Club have included a

Christmas party for families living in a battered women's shelter, and a school-wide exploration of inner

beauty, wherein they covered all mirrors throughout the school, replacing student reflections with positive

messages meant to discourage the typical teenaged focus on outward appearances. Go for it!

Cheerleading News The WY Cheerleading team has won city cheer var-

sity (small) team on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at

Chicago Public School City Cheer, Pom & Hip-hop

competition held at Chicago State University. Congratulations to Coach Denisha and Varsity Cheer

Team.

Debate News Ms. Iagaru is reporting that the success that Whitney Young’s debate team started the school year

with has carried over into second semester. Varsity Debate teams were invited to the College

Preparatory School Round Robin based in California because of our national ranking—an invita-

tion usually reserved for non-urban, private schools. Also, we now hold first place in number of

bids to the national debate tournament, and we are the first urban debate school to have two teams

nominated to compete at the TOC in the same year. On March 2nd, Christian Palacios and John

Vitzileos competed in the Mayer Brown Urban Debate National Qualifiers. John Vitzileos won

First Speaker and Christian earned 7th place. They will be one of two teams from Chicago going

to the National Urban Debate League National Championship tournament in in Washington D.C.

Guys and Dolls Ms. Gordon is reporting that Senior Guys &

Dolls company member, Talia Koylass, had her

piece, Halted Momentum, honored at the State

Festival Audition. We will be representing

WYHS on May 11, 2013 at the 35th Annual

Illinois High School Dance Festival performing

her piece in the Gala Student Choreography

Showcase. Statewide, only 10 pieces were se-

lected. Congratulations to Talia and Guys &

Dolls Dance Company. Honors Dance IV had

their second annual Stu-

dio Dance Showcase on

February 7. The dance

studio was transformed

into a performance space

and the audience was

giving a spectacular

show. Guys & Dolls Annual Up

Close & Personal Con-

cert was a huge success

as well. This show allows the audience to vote

on their favorite pieces. Senior Guys & Dolls

company member, Bobbi Ponder's choreogra-

phy, It Won't Be Us, won first place. If you

missed the show, be sure to attend the WY

Dance Department's Spring Concert, May 3 & 4

@ 7PM in the WY Theater. It Won't Be Us, will

be preformed again in addition to many new

and exciting works. Page 7

Powerbroker the Movie Whitney M. Young, Jr. was one of the most cele-

brated and controversial leaders of the civil rights

era. As head of the National Urban League, he

helped thousands of people struggling against dis-

crimination. The Powerbroker is a movie that

chronicles Mr. Young's fight for civil rights. Ms. Bonnie Boswell is an award-winning reporter,

producer, commentator, and talk show host. She is

also Mr. Young's niece, and was instrumental in a

February 7, 2013 airing of the movie on PBS. When we hear the name Whitney Young, most

Chicagoans think of our school. This movie will

help us also think of the man after whom it was

named.
