WHEN IN OUR MUSIC GOD IS GLORIFIED

The “Big Reveal” of the newly purchased choir robes (photos above and below) occurred on

September 13th. The robes were certainly worth the wait and look beautiful with the new décor

of the renovated sanctuary. The previous red robes (photo bottom left) certainly served the

church well for 40 years, but it is nice to have a fresh look. Many swatches and styles were

considered before deciding on the color and style of the new robes. The Murphy Robe Co.,

where the robes were purchased, made one robe to see before making a final decision.

The robes were able to be purchased sooner than thought because of the generous donations

given. There was enough money within about two months to seriously begin looking at the

catalog of various choir robes. With all the extra giving going on at the church to pay for the

renovations, an early decision was made not to ask for donations for the robes. The music

ministry would raise the money to purchase them through various projects.

Well, I guess we should have known

better and expected the generosity of the

Union Avenue congregation. I was

humbled and awed at the quick response

and the generosity. Saying thank you does

not convey how I feel, but for lack of

something better − THANK YOU. It is an

honor to serve along with you as part of

Union Avenue United Methodist Church.

Happy October!! To my precious partners in ministry

and companions on this journey called faith:

Recently, I read a brief and powerful meditation composed by my

clergy-brother Ed Rose of the Florida Conference. With his permission

and blessing, I share his words with you:

Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

I continued reading Luke last night and this morning pausing after each verse, looking

for the scripture that would be the starting point for today’s devotion. I heard nothing. Well,

not exactly nothing. I heard silence. I heard shhhhhhhh…. So, I stopped reading and listened.

I turned off the baseball game and the house started to get quiet. Two televisions were

making noise in the background (the bedrooms). I tuned them out. I tried to stop thinking, to

put my brain and body in neutral. It wasn’t easy and I wasn’t very successful. I realized how

long it had been since I had experienced quiet.

I changed my evening walk routine. Instead of walking and thinking, or praying, or

meditating, I walked and listened. I heard birds, children’s voices, a lawn mower and some

adults engaged in rather loud conversation. I felt like I was spying on the neighborhood, gath-

ering important information. It was a little weird.

Suddenly it hit me. That’s exactly it. That’s what we are all doing. We are listening and

“spying” with the purpose of discovering opportunities to share God’s love and see God’s

grace in action.

I wonder how many times I’ve missed seeing God in action because I was blinded by

noise. How many times has God’s voice been drowned out by my environment? God can speak

very loud. I know that. God has shouted louder than many of the storms I’ve sailed into and

rescued me. For those times, I say thank you, Lord.

Today, I’m going on a noise fast. I invite you to join me. Take some time, however much

your busy schedule will allow, and be still. Let’s be still…and know…. Amen.

Blinded by noise? Go on a noise fast? I

love it. But let’s not just “take some time” as

brother Ed suggests. Let’s MAKE some time.

After all, we schedule everything else that is

important to us.

I will. You, too? I would love to hear

about your experience.

See you in church,

Coralee

I continue to dream and pray

about a revival of holiness in

our day that moves forth in

mission and creates authentic

community in which each

person can be unleashed

through the empowerment of

the Spirit to fulfill God's cre-

ational intentions.

UNION AVENUE WEEK AT

ALLIANCE COMMUNITY PANTRY

The Alliance Community Pantry has

again asked our church to serve as a

Volunteer Sponsor Church. What does

that mean? UAUMC has agreed to help

provide volunteers to work at the Alliance Community

Pantry for the week of October 26-29.

We hope to provide three volunteers for each shift:

Monday and Wednesday from 3:45-7:15 p.m. and

Tuesday and Thursday from 8:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Twelve volunteers will be needed for the week. If you

currently volunteer you are encouraged to sign up for

a shift for UAUMC!

This is a great way to introduce teens to volunteer

work in our community! Volunteers must be at least

12 years of age. Or perhaps YOU are looking for a

“one time” opportunity to make a difference.

Volunteers may work in these areas:

Screening clients

Food distribution

Stocking shelves

Regular volunteers will be working in these areas to

show church volunteers what to do. For more

information and/or to volunteer, contact: Mike

Patterson at [email protected] or pick up a flier at the

Welcome Center.

COOKS ON CALL!

Cooks on Call is a mission to help

our own members who are in need of a

good meal! Members may have a birth

or a death in their family, an extended

illness, surgery or hospital stay.

Do you know a member of our

church family who is in need of this mission? OR,

would you like to make and deliver a meal to a

member of our church family? To request or provide a

meal, please contact Jen Slack at 330-418-6299 or at

[email protected] to be added to the list!

COMMUNITY

SPAGHETTI DINNER

LEADERS NEEDED

The word is out and we

are now serving about 25

more people at our dinners

than last year. This has altered the grocery list and

given us more opportunity to be of service to our

friends at Christ UMC fellowship hall. Thank you to

so many for being a part of this ministry, either

cooking or serving dinner or providing desserts.

Thanks to you, it’s working!

It’s time for a slight change and we are looking for

new leaders for this valuable ministry. The current

leaders will be stepping down in January. They will

work alongside the new coordinator(s) for the

December dinner, and will then become crew

members. Step-by-step guidelines are available for

anyone who wants to assume this responsibility or the

new coordinators can reinvent the position if desired.

If a group wants to work together, rotate months, or

any other method, it should be an easy transition. We

will need the new leaders in place for December.

If you have an interest in coordinating, or helping

to coordinate this ministry, please let Pastor Coralee

know as soon as God leads you to step up and accept

the opportunity to work with and for a great group of

people. We look forward to serving together.

THANK YOU NOTES RECEIVED

Alliance for Children and Families

(A-FIRST):

“Thank you for the school supplies

and money to purchase the things our

families cannot afford to get

themselves! Your continued support is greatly

appreciated!!!”

Alliance Community Pantry:

“Thank you very much for your recent donation of

cereal which adds variety to our offerings. Our

community greatly benefits from your generosity.”

We also received two thank you letters for our $5,000

donation to the Habitat for Humanity’s Apostle Build.

BUILDING MINISTRIES TEAM

Church is a verb…to put into action! Church is a verb that YOU can put into

action by helping the church continue its service within our walls and beyond. See the

bulletin flier and check off any ministries or committees you would like to find out more

about or ones you would like to serve. Please return the flier in the offering or the office.

Then, on Sunday morning, October 18th, the Communications Committee will host a

MISSION & MINISTRY FAIR. Ministr ies and committees you have checked off, and

others, will be at the fair so that you can find out more and prayerfully find a new or

continuing place of ministry in our faith community.

We anticipate the fair will assist our Lay Leadership Committee as they begin their

annual responsibility of setting up the church’s continuing committees and commissions shortly after the fair.

MISSION & MINISTRY FAIR

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT − AROUND THE CHURCH IN PICTURES Coming into church just got easier with the installation of a wireless

push-button automatic door opening system. Since our renovation, the weight of the door on the north side entrance was a challenge for some people and for those in wheelchairs, but no more. A push of the easily accessible button opens the door smoothly.

Dave Satina, seen here (left), of Incorporated Door Systems of Akron, installed the door mechanism, and Vere Ream of Ream Electric did the electrical work. The work included an identi-cal automatic opener for the interior door leading to the church office.

All are Welcome Here.

And all means ALL.
