It’s a performance driven business. You have to show progress. Fortunately Ihad some good people who helped me along the way.”

Dollansky’s story is one of determination, hard work and perseverance. He didn’tcome from a wealthy family (no sprint carfor this guy’s 16th birthday) but he didcome from a racing family. His father racedin The Midwest Sprint Association andDollansky remembers traveling to racesacross the five state area and Canada.

Growing up Dollansky definitely devel-oped a love for the sport but he learnedearly on that it takes more than love to playin this game, it takes money. “I ran a car acouple of times in my teenage years,” re-

calls Dollansky. “But we didn’t really havethe means for me to go run a car.” Thatwasn’t stopping him.

Hitting the road to Knoxville in his early20’s, Dollansky went in pursuit of hisdream. “Knoxville was the premier racetrack in the county, so I headed down thereto see if I could maybe hook up with ateam that would give me a shot to drivetheir car.” Dollansky got his shot withDuane Roebuck and kicked off his racingcareer.

Dollansky spent about 4 years racing regu-larly in Knoxville and making a name forhimself. He drove for different teams, in-cluding driving the #55 Jensen Construc-tion car. Eventually he joined brothers,Dean & DJ Lindsey out of Illinois and hitthe road with the All Stars Circuit ofChampions. Dollansky says that was hisspring board to the World of Outlaws.

Since joining the World of Outlaws full-time in 2001, Dollansky has seen some no-table success, including winning his 50thcareer World of Outlaws race. He raced forKaravan Motorsports, Larry WoodwardRacing, and Kasey Kahne before teamingup with his current team, Big Game Mo-torsports, in 2010.

Together, Dollansky and Big Game havewon 31 races; 29 World of Outlaw shows,an All Star show and a World ChallengeRace at the Knoxville Nationals. Dollanskysays he is appreciative all the support he

gets from Big Game Treestands and owner,Tod Quiring. “Things continue to progressand we get stronger,” says Dollansky. “Hereally does a lot for me personally as well asfor the team.”

I asked Dollansky to share a story aboutone of his favorite races. He took me backto 2001 in Fargo, ND. “It was a 3 day eventand we ended up winning the finale. But towin, I had to pass Steve Kinser and SammySwindell. At the end of that race beingcongratulated by those two icons was a

pretty big moment in my career.”

His favorite races aren’t just limited to hisown. “All three of my kids race,” he says.“And they all have great potential.”

Dollansky and his oldest son Lucas haverun and won several races together. Lucashas also gained some experience on theother side of the wheel as a member of the#7 crew. Daughter Peyton (15) took thewheel and ran mini-sprints this year. “It’s alearning process,” says Dollansky. “And she

did really well.” Peyton wasn’t the only onewho did well this year. Younger son Garret(19) was named Rookie of the year inKnoxville. “I’ve got three great kids,”beams Dollansky. “And I’m proud of allthree of them. “

We can’t talk about the Dollansky familyand racing without talking about mom/wifeJulie, who drives the apparel line for teamDollansky. Offerings range from familyfriendly swag to the racier “Crowd Pleaser”bootie shorts.

As the 2013 season nears its end, Dollan-sky is holding his own ranking 5th inpoints. Coming off the strong 2012 season,5th was not what he had envisioned butDollansky plans to make the most out ofthe last six races and position the team for2014.

Fans can catch up with Dollansky on Oc-tober 18th at the Wheels of Thunder AllMotorsports Show at the Minneapolis Con-vention Center. He will also be running inthe St. Jude’s Race for the Cure the day be-fore. “It’s a great event for a great cause,”says Dollansky. “I’m happy to be a part ofthat.”

Randy Evers of Brooklyn Park, Min-nesota bought his 1934 2 door sedan‘shell’ in the fall of 1991. It was a bareshell with no chassis underneath andin rough shape, but a long time dreamof Randy’s. Well, a car trailer and twopick up loads of parts later it arrivedat the house. It was the night beforethe big Halloween Blizzard of 1991when they decided it should be put inthe garage. Only one factor…with nochassis it proved to be a little moredifficult of a job than they thought. With the help of family and friends(along with a few choice words), itmade its way inside. It was a goodthing, because the next morning theywoke up to a foot of snow coveringthe ground.

Randy bought a 1973 Valiant andused the chassis, motor, and trans-mission for the 1934 project, and thesteering column came from a 1989Dodge Shadow. Randy’s dream was tohave it running in time for the Min-nesota Street Rod Association’s(MSRA) ‘Back to the 50s’ show inJune, held at the fairgrounds in SaintPaul. With many long nights and tons

of work, it was drivable by the timethe show came. Only in primer, withtwo bucket seats bolted in, but hereached his dream of taking it toshow! That following winter he fin-ished this beautiful family car withcompleting the touches on a 360Mopar engine, auto 727 tranny, selfmade interior, and heat and air forcomfort on their travels. It sports abright metallic red paint with blackcherry accents and ghost flames onthe front fenders.

He says their kids ‘grew up’ in theback seat of the car as it took them onmany family vacations and campingtrips. They are happy to have made somany friends from all over the UnitedStates while traveling to differentevents. Now they are having a blastdoing the same thing with theirgrandchildren, Blake, Logan,Gavin….and another little one on theway, traveling in the back seat ofGrandpa and Grandma’s Garage BuiltBeauty…but it looks like ‘Papa’ willhave to start another project soon tobe able to take all the Grandkids!

T he 11th Annual American VictoryRally celebrated the 15th anniversaryof Polaris building Victory motorcycles

in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Polaris offered a fullschedule of events for the August 16th and17th weekend rally. You could begin yourday at 6:30 am with an all-you-can-eat-breakfast sponsored by the local Knights ofColumbus, and end your day with a spectac-ular fireworks display over the waters ofLake Okoboji.

Lake Okoboji is Iowa’s #1 vacation destina-tion. There are the five Iowa Great Lakes, recreational trails, fishing, hunting, boat-ing, marinas, swimming, beaches, golf, shops, restaurants, free concerts, museums, amusements, and the list goes on. However, there was even more happening with Po-laris’ American Victory Rally weekend.

Polaris’ American Victory Rally includedplant tours, demo rides, official event mer-chandise, vendor displays that includedRick Fairless of Strokers Dallas on site anda selection of Arlen Ness Victory motorcy-cles, dynos, scavenger hunt, bike wash, Vic-tory police demonstrations, boat rideaboard the “Queen II”, Victory games,“Ride for the Red” benefiting the American

Red Cross, bike show, Riders’ Social, riderstech talks, live bands (Josh Turner andO.A.R.), and fireworks. The activities wereheld at Polaris Industries facility in SpiritLake and Preservation Plaza in ArnoldsPark, only four miles south of the Polarisfacility.

Arnolds Park, “the city of five lakes”, ishome to the actual Arnolds Park. Arnolds

Park Amusement Park complex has been apopular Iowa vacation spot since the 1880s,and is situated on the east shore of WestLake Okoboji. The park offers more thanthirty rides including the famous “Legend”wooden rollercoaster, the log flume ride, a63-foot tall Ferris wheel, and fast go-karts.

In addition to the amusement park, there isan Iowa State Visitor Center on site, stocked full of maps and brochures for youto plan out your adventures around theIowa Great Lakes area, and the rest of thestate of Iowa. The Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall ofFame Museum is right there in ArnoldsPark. The museum exhibits include arecording studio, radio booth, posters, al-bums, and the Hall of Fame Wall of Famefeaturing a number of autographed guitars.

The Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum isa not-to-be-missed attraction for the mo-torheads among you. There are exhibitsshowcasing the days of steamboats, motorlaunches, and wooden cruisers. There areat least two-dozen beautifully handcraftedwooden runabouts, canoes, and sailboatson display. There are also a couple dozenvintage outboard motors on racks and indisplays in one section of the museum.

Polaris plant tours attracted more than2,000 visitors during the rally weekend. Ifyou want to tour the plant it is best to makeplans to get there during the week when theassembly lines are in operation, that wayyou can watch new Victorys and Indianmotorcycles rolling off the line. Yes, the newIndian motorcycles are being manufacturedin the Spirit Lake, Iowa facility. Productionbegan about the first part of August. Thereare around sixty employees working oneach of the two assembly lines in the facil-ity, and a new motorcycle is completed oneach line about every four hours.

Outside the plant you could watch the Vic-tory Police Motorcycle Demonstrations thatshowed the metal scraping turns the Vic-

tory Police bikes are capable of when turn-ing in an 18-foot diameter circle. It was in-teresting to see that even when the bike waslaid over on its forged highway bars and bagrail protectors, the tires maintained contactwith the pavement. All you had to do waskeep your feet on the floorboards and giveit a little throttle and the bike would rightitself again. Pretty amazing.

Saturday morning, the American Red Cross“Ride for the Red” drew a hundred and tenregistered riders. They were led on thethree-hour ride by Victory enthusiast andspokesperson R. Lee “Gunny” Ermey, a re-tired Marine drill instructor and actor, prob-ably best know for his role in “Full MetalJacket”, or more recently, as a drill instruc-tor turned therapist in a Geico commercial.

More than $7,000.00 was raised for theAmerican Red Cross this rally weekend.Other local charities benefited from othercharity rides during the American VictoryRally weekend as well.

Vendors were set up among the trees in thegrassy Preservation Plaza park adjacent totheWest Lake Okoboji shore. Rick Fairless,an extraordinary bike builder of StrokersDallas fame, was in attendance live-and-in-person at the rally. Fairless’ long hair andcolorful attire made him easy to spot in acrowd. His Victory motorcycle that was ondisplay could easily be spotted, owing toRick’s unique paint schemes. Fairless wasavailable to talk about motorcycle projectsor pose for photos with his bikes and fans.Arlen Ness was represented with a selectionof his Victory motorcycles on display. Ofcourse you could purchase official eventmerchandise, and even join the VictoryRider’s Association riding club. There werea number of other vendors offering a varietyof biker accessories and services.

Polaris provided the opportunity for ridersto cruise the Okoboji lakes on the historic“Queen II—Flagship of the Iowa Navy”,launched in 1986 to replace the original1880s “Queen” of Lake Okoboji. There wasa scavenger hunt that was essentially a

Page 15: Wheels Of Thunder All Motorsports Magazine October 2013 Issue

twenty-mile loop around West LakeOkoboji with stops at seven different loca-tions. Different Victory parts were placed ineach location for riders to locate; such as agreen Victory fender in the Rock ‘n’ RollMuseum. Victory Games were held atPreservation Plaza. The games included aKeg Toss, Saddlebag Race, Bean Bag Toss, and a Slow Ride Contest.

The Riders’ Social, Saturday evening, wasquite an event. Riders were greeted with anecklace of Mardi Gras beads and in-structed to grab a cupcake. Some of thecupcakes had star-shape stickers on the bot-tom that stated ‘PRIZE’. The prizes werenice Okoboji souvenirs and Victory good-ies. You were also given a ticket for a freedrink—alcoholic or non-alcoholic, andcould purchase a pulled pork sandwichwith sides and a dessert for only $5.“Gunny” addressed the crowd. He extolledthe virtues of small town American hospi-tality, and expressed how much he enjoyedthe rally. There were more drawings formore prizes, and $25 gift cards taped to thebottom of a number of chairs—a nicebonus if you happened to be sitting in oneof the lucky chairs.

This year’s American Victory Rally weekendweather was ideal—mid 70ºs during thedays, with blue skies, white puffy clouds, and cool breezes, and dropping to the low60ºs during the nights. It made for a won-derfully comfortable environment for anoutdoor lakeside free concert.

Country music singer Josh Turner was theheadline entertainment for Saturday night’s

concert. The American Victory Rally wasone of Turner’s stops on his national“Punching Bag” tour. Enthusiastic fans hadstaked out front-of-the-stage-spots in theearly afternoon before his scheduled 7 pmconcert. It was an exciting show and more

than 12,000 people were there to enjoy thefree concert sponsored by Polaris inArnolds Park. In addition to the crowd sit-ting in the grass, there were multitudes ofpeople in boats on West Lake Okoboji en-joying the wonderful evening concert in thepark. A fireworks display over the lake pro-vided the appropriate grand finale.

The American Victory Rally was a funevent. Everything was convenient in theArnolds Park Amusement Park and Preser-vation Plaza area. The twenty-four acre set-ting provided plenty of entertainmentoptions for an enjoyable day—amusementpark, marina, beach, shops, restaurants, theIowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum, IowaRock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame Museum, freeevening concerts, and spectacular fire-works.

“We’ve received lots of great commentsfrom local businesses and residents aboutour very successful American VictoryRally,” Cory Knudtson, Director of Opera-tions, Victory Motorcycles, expressed.“There were a number of riders from allover the U.S., and from overseas as well. This was a factory run rally with more than2,000 visitors on the plant tours during theweekend, and more than 12,000 guests at-tending the free nightly concerts. The

weather was wonderful, and thankfully, there were no safety issues with the riders atthe rally. This year’s American Victory Rallycouldn’t have been much better. We’d liketo express our tremendous thanks to all theemployees and area residents that volun-teered their time and efforts to make this agreat weekend. Now we’re back to businessas usual building outstanding Victory andIndian motorcycles.”

You should probably make your plans earlyto attend next year’s American Victory Rally. That way you have a better chance of re-serving close in lodging to be near all theaction.

Beautiful Historic Downtown HastingsMinnesota has been the site for the an-nual Historic Hastings Saturday Night

Cruise-In’s for 8 years. The DowntownBusiness Association (DBA) was approachedin 2005 by classic car enthusiasts to start acar show in downtown Hastings on Satur-days in the summer. The DBA thought itwas worth looking into. They knew in orderfor this to work—a group of people neededto take ownership in this venture and plan, finance and run these shows

The DBA decided to take the challenge andso a committee was formed to plan, getsponsorships to finance the shows and vol-unteers to help with the actual show. It wasdecided to name this show The HistoricHastings Saturday Night Cruise-In, andhold it every other Saturday from June toOctober. It comes out to be 9 to 10 shows. The committee wanted to make sure andnot hold a show during Rivertown Dayswhich has been a Hastings festival for manymany years so planning needs to make surethe Rivertown Days Event would not alsobe a cruise-in night.

The committee also needed to check withthe City of Hastings to make sure thiswould be feasible and to request the down-town area streets to be blocked off to onlyallow classic cars 1976 or older. Sponsor-ships were requested from local businessesand merchants and dash plaques and ad-vertising was arranged for all of the spon-sors of the show.

There is a lot of work behind the scenesthat take place before the show can go onincluding obtaining sponsorships, advertis-ing, meetings with city officials for streetblocking, obtaining food and merchandisevendors, committee planning sessions andvolunteer training.

The Historic Hastings Saturday Cruise-in’shave been a tremendous success from thestart and they just keep growing every year. They average anywhere from 600 plus clas-sic cars per show with up to 12 food ven-dors and between 2000 to 5000 spectatorsattending. Most downtown shops andrestaurants are open and most offer specialsor sales with the show running from 5 pmto 9 pm.

An Information Booth for the Cruise-in isrun by volunteers and is set up in the mid-dle of 2nd street. The DBA also sells T-shirts with sponsorship logos and a newcreative Cruise-in design every year at thisbooth.

Sept, 14th, Millville MN DRY, DRY, DRY! Sept 15th (Race-day) WET, WET, WET! When track workers were prep-ping the course for the fall edition of the District 23 Spring

Creek Hare Scrambles race on Saturday, conditions were superdry due to sparse rainfall for weeks previous, so it was decidedto apply copious amount of water to the starting area for theracers and spectators benefit. After the starting line area wasthoroughly prepped, later that evening the rains came, and keptcoming, all night! By morning on race day, the starting line wasa quagmire of 6-9 inched of soupy mud. Deep enough to swal-low the mini racers in the blink of an eye, and give all othersfits at the beginning of their races.

Aaron Boatman (Yamaha) leads KTMmounted #125 Colton Reschke outof a verywet Spring Creek sand wash during the

Premier Class race.

Out came the bulldozers and bobcats.Even though Spring Creek Motocross Parkis in a “NoWake Zone” that didnt stop thegraders from generating some swells thatrival the waves seen at “The Pipeline” onthe island of Oahu.

The decision was made to move the startline to the first grass track area, whichended up delaying the first race of the dayby 1.5 hours. No big deal! While the startarea was a mess, the trail through thewoods were in mint condition, tacky withno dust and very fast.

The first class to run were the PremierClass and the Girls. With the racers warm-ing up their 65cc and 85 and 105cc twostrokes along with a sprinkling of fourstrokes, a light breeze with cool temps setthe stage for an epic battle that would seeyouth motocross champ and first time harescramble competitor, YZ85 mounted AaronBoatman engaged in an epic battle royalethat would see him running bar to barthrough the infamous Spring Creek sandwash elbow to elbow with Colton Reschkewho was on his expertly tuned ReschkeRacing KTM SX 105. At the checkered flag#106 Collin Maynard on his PowerbandRacing prepared KTM SX105 splashed andslid his way to the top of the podium withReschke second and Boatman, 20 secondsadrift, rounding out the podium.

The second race of the day was for the Pee-Wee, Micro and Macro speedsters. The#198 KTM if Travis Illies would kiss thetrophy girl (figuratively speaking) at theend of the Macro race with Charlie Siebe-naler finishing in second place.

Next up was the C-Class and the WomensClass. Early into the first lap of the Wom-ens race, in the first woods section, Dis-trict 23 motocross fast gal but first timeHare Scrambles racer #24 Shay Anna Wil-son got hung up behind a stalled rider froman earlier wave, which saw her great startevaporate as everyone in her class gotaround her on the inside while she workedto extricate her Yamaha YZ250F from be-tween the dormant bike and rider and the

This show could be called Minnesotas Got Talent! AA class starting line, #37 AMA Pro-Motocross Rookie hot shoe Alex Martin, #112 Multi-time ISDE racer and factory racer

trees on the outside of the corner. Wilsonhad to set the dial to “boil” to make up thedeficit, but would pour on the coals to ul-timately finish in the third position behindformer D-23 Womens H.S. champs MarySchreiner in second and Kristi Grote whowas the winner of the day.

The last race of the day, the AA, A and Bclass was set to be a barn burner of a race, with the talent on the AA line sooo very

deep. One knew that things were going tobe very exciting indeed. On the line with 5time USA representative at the Interna-tional Six Day Enduro and former factoryrider for ATK, KTM, GasGas and Husaberg,Matt Stavish, there also sat National endurochamp Kyle Nelson on his Yamaha YZ 125,Champ Dylan Debel on his #11 HondaCRF 450, former champ Jesse “Junior”Blomberg, Multi-time District 23 champion#63 Nate Ferderer on a Husqvarna andmany more very talented racers, including2013 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross racerAlex Martin on his Rock River Yamaha

YZ250F, to give the racers and spectatorsan extra treat, before having to leave to getto practice for his upcoming appearance at

the Motocross of Nations, where he will berepresenting for Puerto Rico in the MX2 di-vision.

It seems that the apple didnt fall far fromthe tree, as Martin, son of multi-time AMAnational hare scrambles champ and formerfactory racer and current owner of theSpring Creek Motocross Park John Martin, put his stamp on his intention to show thatnot only is he fast at getting around a mototrack, but also very quick at snaking hisway through the woods. At the end of thesecond lap, Alex had a commanding leadof more than 1 minute over the rest of thefield. Mid-way through the 2+ hour raceand after a long season of Pro motocrossracing, the engine on his YZ-250 finallycried “uncle”, ending his day on the trailer. That would leave #11 Dylan Debel to bat-tle for the lead with a hard charging Kyle

Osseo Powersports, Checkpoint Off-RoadHonda CRF 450 mounted race winner #11Dylan Debel in his natural habitat, openwoods, on the gas, leading the race on his

way to victory in the AA class.

dont mean maybe.

Nelson on his YZ125. Nelson apparentlydidnt cruse around in “economy mode”,as he would need to refill the stock fueltank at the end of every lap. He would-

spend the time lost in the refueling areacatching up to the leader Debel, only togive it up again at the end of the next lap.On the last lap, Debel stopped to help #63Nate Ferderer who in a racing incident gothis boot wedged between the rear tire andswingarm of his Husquvarna, all withoutcoming off of the bike. Even with the delay, the #11 Debel went on to finish in firstplace with Ferderer in second place andNelson on his freshly fueled YZ125 com-ing home in third.

So, Yaall heard of a motocross racer namedJerry Robin? Made quite a name for him-self for making it to the Loretta Lynns Mo-tocross National Championships riding avery vintage Honda CR250? Well, meetJerry Robin the woods racer! Before therace Robin stated that he has only raced afew off-road events and he was looking for-ward to todays race. In a class that is deepin talent, Robin went on to smoke his class, winning by more than 7 minutes and fin-ishing 5th overall in the AA,A&B rankings.

What started out looking like what wouldbe a day of total misery turned out to be agreat day of racing and fellowship in the

MN, off-road racing community. Big thanksto Mike Quinn and his crew for putting to-gether a race that AA winner Dylan Debelremarked, could quite easily be the “HareScramble of the Year”.

Yamaha mounted #2362 racer MarcusKoester, snaking his way under the “BigTipped Over Tree” in the 200-C race to end

the day in 6th place.

Maybe the biggest new name is off-roadstar and Walker Evans Racing driver RJ Anderson, who has taken a commanding lead in Pro TX SXS rac-ing, sweeping the first event which took place at ERXMotor Park in Elk River, Minnesota, August 10-11, andthen taking a win at the SnoBarons Haydays race thispast September 7-8 in Sunrise, Minnesota.

Anderson, who hails from Riverside, Cali-fornia, became the first Terracross driver tosweep the Side-X-Side class at a Terracrossevent besting a talented field that includedDaryl Rath (Mystik Lubricants), Nick Nel-son (ATV World Magazine), X Games tal-ent Chris Burandt (FOX) and pastTerracross winner Andrew Carlson(Sportech). He faltered at Haydays gettingtaken out in one of the opening laps whichopened the door for Zac Zakowski (Za-kowski Motorsports) to take his first ProTerracross win. Carlson kept himself in thepoints mix taking two seconds at Haydaysdespite having undergone sugery on hisknee just a week prior.

Pro TX Quad has been just as exciting and, while it looked like frontrunner Rory Beck-

man (FOX) would run away with the classafter the first race at ERX, Doug Gustquickly changed the scenario winning thesecond race. Daryl Rath put his quad backup front at Haydays after having a roughouting at ERX Motor Park where a crashleft him unable to race and he just tookstarts. Rath won one of the FOX Pro TXQuad 4x4 Stock races giving up the otherone to Beckman, who also claimed a win atERX. Zakowski took two second place fin-ishes.

SpeedingWith Style riders will compete forCaleb’s Cup, a trophy named after the lateCaleb Moore who passed away from in-juries suffered from a crash jumping asnowmobile at theWinter X Games. Speed-ing With Style looked up for grabs headedinto ERX as no one had really stepped up.Marco Picado won the comp at ERX butnewcomer JR Hinds ran away with it atHaydays, winning both SWS events.

can be. In addition to the Mystik Lubri-cants found in all the race vehicles, Ter-racross has welcomed GBC Tires andWalker Evans as sponsors. Walker Evanssupplies the shocks found on all the PolarisRZR XP 1000s as well as the bead lockwheels used on all the race vehicles. Thesewheels combined with GBC Kanati Mon-grel tires have greatly reduced the fre-quency of tires rolling off rims, somethingthe circuit saw a lot of last season.

“Last year we saw a lot of failures with flattires and tires rolling off rims,” said Ter-racross’ Joe Duncan. “Thanks to GBC andWalker Evans wheels those problems havevirtually been eliminated.

When we look for sponsors for Mystik Lu-bricants Terracross Championship we lookfor the best in the industry,” continuedDuncan. “So, to put it bluntly, if you see

our brands together you know you’re get-ting the best.”

One race remains on the Mystik LubricantsTerracross Championship schedule. Watchwww.terracrossracing.com for schedule an-nouncements regarding this event.

The Mystik Lubricants Terracross Champi-onship features the best off-road and actionsports athletes competing on Quads andSide-X-Sides on a rough, muddy coursecomplete with obstacles such as rocks, logs, jumps and tight turns. Races are airedon CBS Sports Network.

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, MO– 224 MPH in one mile.Bill Tomlinson’s My Way

50- foot Mystic powerboat with6000 horsepower twin turbinemotors smoked the all-time Lakeof the Ozarks Shootout record onSunday, Aug. 25, 2013, with runsof 215 mph and 224 mph to set anew standard for speed on the water.

In My Way’s first trip to the Shootout in2011, Tomlinson won his first Top GunTrophy tying the new course record of 208mph set by Dave Scott in 2010. Tomlinsonvowed to return in 2012 to eclipse that run,but crashed into a large cruiser wake duringthe 1,000 Islands Poker Run rendering MyWay incapable of racing only weeks beforethe Shootout.

One year later, after 1000 man-hours ofhard work – not to mention plenty of re-lamination and hundreds of thousands ofdollars in repairs, Tomlinson made good onhis word with a world-class run of 224 mphbefore thousands of screaming powerboat

enthusiasts at the 25th Anniversary of theLake of the Ozarks Shootout.

Now read this very carefully. The Top Pon-toon went to Brad Rowland with a speed of114 mph. Are you kidding me? I was thereand was blown away like everyone else withwhen this “TOON” powered by three Mer-cury outboards came through the lights. The crowd went wild! Another very im-pressive run for Top PWC title was awardedto Dan O’Keefe with a speed of 95 mph.Wow!

My family and friends have been attending this event for several years now, and I can assure youit is one big party on the water. Boats are tied up together for the entire length of the 1 mile racecourse 2 and 3 rows deep. You are going to make new friends and have the opportunity to get upclose to view some of the most awesome performance boats in action attempting record runs.

Another Top Gun award went to Mikd D’Anniballein his 36 foot Skater for the Top Cat – Profes-

Gun at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout.Again this year’s event was held at CaptainRon’s Bar & Grill in Sunrise Beach wherefans could view the race from the shore atCaptain Ron’s, from private boats or fromthe luxurious Celebration Cruises yacht, lo-cated right on the finish line.

Last year, the Shootout drew a crowd of75,000 and attracted 121 racers. So it’s nosurprise the Shootout is the largest unsanc-tioned boating race in the U.S. and is notedas one of the nation’s eight “must-see” boat-ing events. Each competitor races individu-ally against the clock rather than otherboats. With lots of activities for kids andadults, the Shootout is more than just a raceweekend; it’s an eight-day celebration. Thefestivities start, with The Great ShootoutTreasure Hunt at Captain Ron’s. The Huntincludes dinner, drinks and a dig for treas-

ure chests containing fabulous prizes.

As part of the weeklong events leading upto the 25th Annual Lake of the Ozarks

Shootout powerboat races Saturday andSunday, a Bob Morgan Memorial ShootoutHall of Fame induction ceremony dinner

was held Thursday, Aug. 22 at CannonSmoked Saloon’s The Stables venue in Sun-rise Beach. A number of the Shootout’slongtime contributors, racers and otherswere honored with many being the first in-ductees with nameplates added to the newmemorial at Captain Ron’s. Additionalevents included the Fourth Annual CoorsLight and Miller Light Mini-Shootout,Showcase Publishing Shootout Benefit GolfTournament, the Great Shootout TreasureHunt, Shootout PWC Dam Run, ShootoutVolleyball Tournament, Shootout in thePark Meet and Greet, Make-A-Wish Power-boat Rides, Stereo Shootout and Poly LiftPoker Run.

A momentous event helped jumpstart themain Shootout events Saturday – the un-veiling of the Bob Morgan MemorialShootout Hall of Fame monument. Morethan 50 attendees watched as Sue Morganand her daughter Amanda Snyder, who flewfrom Virginia Beach, Va. to attend the cere-mony, helped unveil the newly constructedmemorial of Sue’s late husband andAmanda’s father. As part of the Shootout’ssilver anniversary, the memorial was de-signed and constructed to honor Morgan, who passed away along with his teammatehis teammate, Jeff “JT” Tillman when themen’s 46-foot Skater, also known as BadMoon Risin’, crashed during the Super BoatInternational Championships November2011 in Key West, Fla. Morgan has been along time Shootout icon, wining Top Gunhonors in 1991 and 1995 under his BigThunder name. by-eight inch bricks also make up the me-morial and 4-by-8 inch bricks line the walk-way to the memorial, which both can bepurchased to help go toward the Lake of theOzarks Shootout’s charitable contributionsgiven to more than 20 local organizationsand emergency responders from its pro-ceeds.

Following this memorial unveiling cere-mony, three U.S. Air Force flyovers wereconducted to honor Morgan and Tillmanbefore their friends and former fellowShootout competitors took to the water forSaturday’s first round of competition andqualifying time trial rounds.

The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is thelargest unsanctioned boat race in the coun-try, featuring some of the top racers and off-shore racing powerboats in the U.S. andCanada. Most importantly, however, the do-nations to local charities benefitting fromthe event continue to grow. That's what it'sreally all about. Last year's Shootout raised$100,000 for 22 area charities, including sixlocal fire protection districts. This yearShootout charities include Boy Scouts ofAmerica, Citizens Against Domestic Vio-lence, Coffman Bend Fire Association, Dog-

wood Animal Shelter, Laurie Elks Lodge,Habitat for Humanity, Knights of ColumbiaCouncil at St. Patrick’s Church, Lake of theOzarks Watershed Alliance, Lake OzarkElks Club, Lake of the Ozarks Fire Protec-tion District, Ozarks Coast Kiwanis, Lakeof the Ozarks Shriners, Lake West Cham-ber of Commerce, Laurie/Sunrise Beach Ro-tary Club, Make-a-Wish Foundation,Mid-County Fire Protection District, Mas-ter Naturalists, Northwest Fire ProtectionDistrict, Osage Beach Fire Protection Dis-trict, Camden County Saddle Club, Sharethe Harvest Food Pantry, Sunrise Beach FireProtection District and Lake of the OzarksWater Safety Council.

The new record is now in the books, an-other boat racer immortalized. The onlyquestion: who’s next?

As many short track race fans across the Midwestalready know, Raceway Park in Shakopee, Min-nesota turned off the lights one final time on Sun-

day September 1, 2013. On that last night, it was muchlike saying goodbye to an old friend. While my personalexperiences at Raceway may not go back as far as someof the regular attendees, Sunday nights have become atradition for my family for the last 10 years or so. I’vealways tried to keep up on the happenings at Racewaymost of my life, as it was one of the tracks closest tohome, we just weren’t regular spectators for manyyears for one reason or another.

When Rob Hahn started The Midwest Rac-ing Connection (formerly Minnesota’s Rac-ing Connection), Raceway Park was one ofonly 3 tracks featured on a regular basis.Once my son was old enough for me tohandle an evening alone without mom(meaning I didn’t have to worry aboutchanging diapers at the race track), ourSunday nights in the summer were spent atRaceway Park. I’ve only missed a couple ofSunday night shows in the last 10 years orso. Heck, the old man even spent manySunday nights at the track with us for anumber of years. I always thought it waskind of cool to have the three of us sittingtogether on Sunday nights. The three of ussat together at Raceway Park one final timeLabor Day weekend.

While it’s sad to see another race trackclose the doors, the hardest part will be notseeing all of the people we typically onlysee on Sunday nights at Raceway. There aremany familiar faces, whether it was thetrack officials hanging out in the pits or inthe tower, the pit shack, ticket booths, con-cession stands, the fans in the stands or allof the drivers/crew members, we’ll surelymiss everyone next year.

I haven’t had a chance to get to know asmany of the drivers as much as some of theother tracks when bringing the young oneto the track years ago, but the past fewyears we’ll usually walk through pits be-forehand and take care of our Sunday night“education sessions.” Heck, I hardly knew

Page 44: Wheels Of Thunder All Motorsports Magazine October 2013 Issue

Page 44 Find us on Facebook “Wheels of Thunder” October 2013

Denny Barta and his young friend GregLarson until we ran into them at Speed-weeks in Daytona Beach earlier this year.

It was great to see such a huge turnout forthe final night at Raceway. The parking lotwas full well before the races started, andfans were 10-20 deep between the bleach-ers for the SRO crowd. The racing action

did not disappoint on this night, as a tightpoint battle between Brent Kane and Con-rad Jorgenson went down to the final lap.Along with the tight point battle, JeremyWolff rolled over his car and the Figure-8drivers kept fans on the edge of their seatsall night long. The racing has always beenas good as it was on the final night. If onlythe crowds were like this more often, we

might not have been saying goodbye to theold friend.

With all of this in mind, there is some hopethat Sunday night racing can continuesomewhere in the Twin Cities area in thefuture. Not much has been released pub-licly regarding future opportunities, butthat’s just how business works. All we cando is hope for the best. If nothing comesup to replace Raceway Park, thanks for thememories.

In 2008, Cedar Rapids was devastated by aflood that crested at 31.12 feet on June13th. The Chrome Horse took on 12 feet ofwater which took months of cleanup.Downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa was cov-ered with some 9 square miles of floodingreaching into residential area in the worst500 year flood reported.

The Chrome Horse re-opened in March,

2009 after 9 of cleanup, repair and con-struction. There also was considerable re-designing, which resulted in an 84-foothorseshoe bar, more booth seating, reloca-tion of the kitchen and restrooms, andmore of a saloon-type look with consider-able wood craftsmanship. The ice bar isone of the few of its kind in the country.

Wow, what a great summer! All the ridesand fundraisers were cool. ABATE Univer-sity, Algona and Sturgis were awesome. And the icing on the cake was the 25th an-nual ABATE of Minnesota State Rally. OurRally Chair, Derrell Jensen, and his entirecrew did a fabulous job. Thank you to allthe workers, attendees and vendors! Themusic was great and the games and con-tests were fun. Yes, Minnesota’s freedomloving motorcyclists had a great summer. But I wonder how many of them realizedthey were riding around with a big targeton their back? There are quite a cross sec-tion of groups who are spending tremen-dous amounts of money and time to alterthe way you ride. Let me explain:

1) The Minnesota Department of PublicSafety takes any uptick in road fatali-ties very seriously. Using the TowardZero Deaths (TZD) approach, theynow tie every aspect of road use statis-tics together to drive down fatalities.Much like a craftsman, the people in-volved in TZD take great pride in theirwork. When the statistics show fatal-ity levels rising, they will certainly takeaction to reduce them. Unfortunately,2013 has seen a spike in motorcyclerider fatalities. And riders will now beunder greater scrutiny.

2) Recently I sat through a MinnesotaHouse Commerce Committee infor-mational meeting. These out of sessionmeetings are where key players briefthe members on legislation they willpush for in the upcoming session. I lis-tened in because this was on theagenda: "Discussion of auto insurancemodernization." Testimony from thetrial lawyers associations revealed awish list of changes to insurance lawsin Minnesota, including no-fault in-surance for motorcycles. The no-faultlaws date to 1974. While I was youngat the time, I remember how hard themotorcycle dealers and riders foughtto keep motorcycles out of this legisla-tion. The attorney associations will bemaking a strong push for this in 2014.Make no mistake – if enacted this willhit you hard in the wallet.

3) For a couple years now the Brain In-jury Association of Minnesota has hadmotorcycle helmet legislation as one of

their top legislative priorities. Theyhave a multi-million dollar budget anda full time lobbying presence at theMinnesota Capitol. While they are awonderful organization that does greatthings, ABATE of Minnesota believestheir efforts are misplaced. They couldachieve far greater results by subsidiz-ing motorcycle rider training and pro-moting motorist awareness ofmotorcycles than proposing heavyhanded legislation.

Bikers have a responsibility too and ABATEof Minnesota does a wonderful job of pro-moting motorcycle training and motoristawareness. Through our Share the Roadprogram we have educated thousandsteenagers over the years on the importanceof watching for motorcyclists while driv-ing. And we strongly promote motorcyclesafety training, both beginner and ad-vanced. But if Minnesota motorcycliststruly want to be successful at maintainingour way of life, the many riders who arenot contributing to their own riding free-dom need to step up to the plate. Theyneed to understand that riding around witha target on your back is not fun. They needto turn around and face the challenges wehave with a strong united voice. ABATE ofMinnesota is that strong voice for streetmotorcycle riders in Minnesota. Join andsupport ABATE of Minnesota.

Yours in freedom,Mack Backlund, State Coordinator

Laps passedby and they still battled for the lead, how-ever Read slowly broke away. Read claimedthe lead with Pogones in second. Pogonesgrabbed the high line and drove past Readfor first. Pogones and Read drove away

from the others and Pogones kept Readback long enough to take the checkers.

Justin Pogones raced Princeton every Fri-day, and took five feature wins, howeverDave Read was more consistent in hisweekly finishes and Read was declared thechampion.

Read drives the #21RWollak Constructionsponsored Street Stock. Read was the 2012WISSOTA National Champion and wonfour feature wins at Princeton in 2013.Read finished in the top five positionsweekly and took the championship withone point more than Pogones the defend-ing track champion.

The Cedar Boat Club hosted an afternoon ofDrag Boat racing entitled “Fire on theRiver” on Saturday, September 7th. Both

outboard and jet boats competed on a course runningfrom the Ellis Boat Harbor to the ski show platformnear Ellis Pool which is a quarter mile. Drag Boat testand tune allowed drivers to dial in times with racingbeginning at 1:00 p.m. and running until approxi-mately 5:00 p.m. The thunder of boats hitting morethan 100-miles-per-hour echoed along the Cedar Riverfor the first of hopefully many drag boat races to comein the future. This is an ideal location with excellentspectator viewing along the Ellis Park road and park.

With only several weeks to prepare forsuch an event after approval, this boat cluband volunteers proved they have the abilityto make this an annual event. Organizerssaid they just received permission recentlyfrom the Iowa Department of Natural Re-sources (DNR) to close that section of the

Cedar River for the racing boats on thatSaturday. Kevin Curl, a boat club boardmember, said because of the late permis-sion, it was not possible to promote thisevent like they wanted to before the race. But with limited marketing, advertising, the club generated enough excitement toinclude free viewing for a good first yearcrowd which lined the banks of the CedarRiver.

The boat club traditionally hosts a lighted“Venetian Night” boat parade and fire-works show every August on the CedarRiver by the Ellis Boat Harbor. This year, the parade and fireworks followed the Drag

Boat racing. Boat club members said if thisfirst year of racing is successful, they’llcombine the racing, boat parade and fire-works on future dates as well, probably inSeptember. Curl said the DNR is more re-ceptive to closing a section of the river afterLabor Day rather than before.

With the right promotions, sponsorship, and marketing, this club has the potentialto attract a big time sanction race to makethis one of the premier Drag Boat races inthe Midwest.

Trucks from across the state of Iowa gearedup Labor Day weekend for the 5th AnnualVolga City Truck Cruise, in Volga City

Iowa, to help rebuild the community. This 3 dayevent brought trucks and families together to give100% back to the local community. From a classictruck show to burning off tires there was somethingfor everyone to enjoy. The Volga City Truck Cruiseis a fundraiser for renovation of the Volga CityOpera House. This Historic building is being re-stored to once again serve as an opera house thatwill host many different types of community events.

A $15,000 grant from Upper MississippiGaming Corporation (UMGC) has pro-vided significant funding for exterior ren-ovation of the Volga City Opera House thissummer. The UMGC grant assisted in pro-viding all new energy-efficient windowsand doors for the historic building, givingthe Volga City Opera House a look equal-ing its debut when it first opened in 1914!

The Opera House was also “tuck-pointed”this year, giving it an updated appearance, and added protection for it’s nearly 100year-old masonry. The tuck-pointing im-provements entailed replacement of all ofthe mortar between the bricks, and is avery tedious project. Upgrades under this

grant have been progressing over the pastfour to five months.

“The exterior renovation of the Volga CityOpera House is nearly complete,” said TomLott, co-founder of VCTC, Inc., a non-

profit organization dedicated to helpingrural communities with economic devel-opment and the organization behind thisrenovation. “We are absolutely pleased thatthis very large grant has allowed us to sealup the building and protect it from weatherelements, and to complete the exterior ren-ovation of this historic treasure.” VCTC,Inc. had already completed construction ofa new roof in 2011 on the Opera Housethrough community fundraising efforts.

The renovation of the Opera House met agrant qualification in that it will provide aneed or benefit for the people of ClaytonCounty. Its use as a community meetingplace will not only provide a venue for artsevents and community gatherings, but it ishoped it will also spur economic develop-

ment for the county.

The grant from Upper Mississippi GamingCorporation has advanced renovations farenough to allow VCTC, Inc. to now turnits attention to renovation of the interior ofthe building.

“This building is not just a landmark forthe town of Volga, but it was historically ameeting place for theater events, dances, wedding receptions and other communityevents as decades of history unfolded,” saidTom Klingman, the other co-founder ofVCTC, Inc. “Now, with the assistance ofthis grant, residents of Clayton County canonce again be very proud of the Volga CityOpera House as a visual focal point of the

Volga City valley, and envision how great itwill be to have the Opera House become acommunity gathering place for the wholecounty once again!”

Before the $15,000 grant was awarded, the

Volga City Opera House renovation projecthad been driven by residents of Volga Cityand citizens of Clayton County solelythrough community donations and volun-teer efforts. Citizens from local communi-ties have donated much time and energy towork on the Opera House and volunteerfor fundraisers for the Opera House proj-ect. An example of these volunteer efforts, were in full effect August 31 through Sep-tember 1, 2013 at this year’s Volga CityTruck Cruise, where everyone was wel-

comed to come support the Opera Houseby purchasing raffle tickets, food and nov-elty items, while enjoying a unique eventthat Clayton County can be proud to say isIowa’s largest truck event!

This year was the 5th annual Volga CityTruck Cruise. Funds raised in past yearscontributed to the reroofing of the OperaHouse, as well as for some interior up-grades. Details of the event are online at

www.volgacitytruckcruise.com, and sup-porters are encouraged to “Like” Volga CityTruck Cruise on Facebook to share newson the project. As always, 100% of all fundsraised from the Truck Cruise will be putinto the Opera House renovation. All of thepeople working at the Truck Cruise, in-cluding the organizers of the event, providetheir time throughout the year at no cost,so the event truly is produced completelythrough volunteer efforts.
