From the Principal:

This week is Education Week and the theme for 2020 is ‘Learning Together’. This week we will be celebrating the partnerships that exist between members of the whole school community, partnerships that have been enhanced as a result of Covid-19.

Over the past few months, our teachers have worked really hard to ensure that every child is known, valued and cared for. They have provided many opportunities for students to learn new things and achieve their personal best. Our staff are positive role models, who love working with students, preparing them for the world in which we live. They try hard to build strong, respectful relationships with families to ensure that everyone takes responsibility for their learning. After all, a parent is a child’s first teacher! In recent months, many parents were expected to work from home, as well as assist their children with virtual learning. This would not have been easy and I feel that many parents would have struggled to manage these expectations. I would like to thank parents, carers and staff for working and learning together during this very difficult time. We all know that schools bring people together but even when school was closed, through virtual learning, we were still able to learn together anywhere, anytime.

This week, we will recognise students’ fine achievements by presenting awards to worthy recipients at Stage assemblies. In line with Covid-19 Learning Guidelines, the assemblies will be short and unfortunately, parents are still not permitted to attend. Hopefully, this will change in the not too distant future. I congratulate all of the award winners.

Kind regards

Joan Stephens Principal

Academic Corner – Library

This term has started off with a brilliant bang! Children have settled into a Covid-19 learning routine remarkably well. At the moment, the older children are really enjoying reading graphic novels, which are just like comic books, but longer. They can’t get enough of them, so many students reserve the books in the ‘Oliver Library’, just so they can be next to read the book. Reservations can be made with both hard copy books and e-books. Children also have an opportunity to review particular books which have been marked. When they finish reading the book, they write a book review in the ‘Oliver Library’. Once completed, they receive a blue card for their book review. I always enjoy hearing the children’s opinions about a book they have read and other students can also read the review when browsing the library catalogue. Don’t forget, all children can borrow e-books! Download the Wheeler’s e-platform app and login to our school. The login is the same one that the children use at school. Bedtime stories are available on a device and best of all, you can’t lose an e-book, as it returns itself in two weeks. Students in Kinder, Year One and Year Two are listening and discussing the nominated books from the Children’s Book Council Awards list. I am sure lots of fun stories will be shared with the class. This creates wonderful connections with the books, as well as with each other. I especially love the story ‘My Friend Fred’. It is very clever and funny! Stage 1 are also checking out Non Fiction books, which are based on living things. It is a wonderful way for the students to learn more about the world we live in. They are also understanding how to use Non Fiction books to find information quickly and easily. Year 3 have been listening to the story ‘Trouble in the Surf’, which is based on a true story about Charles Kingsford Smith. They have been learning to read information on the internet and writing down important information using their own words. It is a new skill for them but they are getting better as time goes on. They are also keeping an eye out for interesting words and personal characteristics. The children will create a word art masterpiece using the information learnt about Charles Kingsford Smith. Year 4 are listening to the story ‘Lenny the Legend’, which is based on the true story of Lenny Gwyther. They have been writing down interesting words and the personal characteristics that Lenny portrays throughout the story. The historical content and Lenny Gwyther’s personality has engaged the children’s curious minds. Using the interesting words, personal characteristics and historical facts, the children will create a masterpiece of words to display in the library. Finally, Stage 3! As the graphic novels have proven to be very popular, the children are creating their own comic books in various formats. The children’s excitement of this project is bubbling over as they begin to create their own characters and scripts. Their imaginations are running wild with ideas and I can’t wait to read them. I am sure there will be lots of laughs along the way. Covid-19 can’t have all the press, so keep your eyes peeled for news about the Book Fair! Mrs Neal Teacher/Librarian
