Priority One: Security• How is Canada Providing Help?
– Provide 3 pieces of evidence in your own words.
– Training, mentoring and equipping the Afghan National Army and the Afghan National Police
– Building capacity in logic and administration support
– Initiatives in the justice and correctional systems
– What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011?
– Higher capacity to conduct operations and keep key districts of the province of Kandahar more secure

Priority Two: Basic Services• How is Canada Providing Help?

– Provide/improve education– Provide vocational training– Create jobs for Afghans and
promote agriculture production and provide access to credit for entrepreneurs
– What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011?
– Kandahar’s provincial gov’t and Afghanistan's core government ministries will be able to provide basic services in key districts of Kandahar
– Land benefitting from improved irrigation and water management, built, repaired or expanded schools, trained teachers, new infrastructure plans put into motion, seasonal jobs made

Priority Three: Humanitarian Aid• How is Canada Providing Help?
– Canada gives about $111 million over a span of 3 years to help the Afghanistan government help give aid to the Afghan people.
– Canada provides food and non-food aid( blankets, kitchen utensils) to the people who need them.
– Vaccinations are given to those who need them as well as a other health services.
- What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011?
- Canada will continue to make humanitarian aid available to the Afghan people.
- To monitor progress- so that the amount of success is known. How many people are getting health care, an education, or vaccinations, and how much land is getting cleared of mines.

Priority Five: National Institutions• How is Canada Providing Help?
– Canada provides technical and financial support for the election processes.
– Get other countries to donate to the Independent Elections Commissions.
– Give national institutions/departments with “techy” people, training support, and equipment.
– What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011?
– Canada desires that Afghanistan will be capable of carrying out democratic government procedures- elections and other services.
– It is also hoped that Afghanistan will be able to plan on their own and manage the budgeting methods.

Signature Project 1 – Dahla Dam and Irrigation System .
• Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan?
• It is important for the people because it will supply irrigation water for the people and their needs, give seasonal jobs, and help the agriculture in Afghanistan.
• What is Canada doing to help? Canada is providing money and doing many of
the repairs to the dam(water valves, generators, etc.)
Training is also providing training for farmers in water management, and other farming techniques.

Signature Project 2 – Education
• Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan?
They have some of the lowest education levels and about half of the children do not go to school
Only about 16% of the people are literate
• What is Canada doing to help? – Find at least 2 pieces of
information to place here. Providing training for up to 3,000
teachers and adult literacy and vocational training
Expanding, repairing or building 50 schools in key districts of Kandahar

Signature Project 3 – Polio Eradication.
• Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan?
• Because it means that their children will be protected from this debilitating disease. Less kids will die or have to live with paralysis.
• What is Canada doing to help?• Canada is finding the nomadic routes that are
travelled and establishing points where the polio vaccination is distributed.
• Canada will donate $60 million dollars toward this cause.
