The LSU Honors High School Credit Program offers ambitious middle and
high school students an opportunity to earn a unit of honors high school
credit in just six weeks. It also offers enthusiastic teachers who are certified
in their subjects, bright, motivated classmates, a low student-teacher ratio,
the facilities of a major research university, the opportunity to fulfill college
entrance requirements, and a chance to get a taste of campus life. Located
on the beautiful LSU campus, the LSU Honors High School Credit Program
offers students the opportunity to use the science laboratories, libraries,
and computer labs of Louisiana’s flagship university. Coursework in science
involves numerous lab activities and occasional field trips to unique LSU
facilities. The small class size and long class periods of the program stimulate
the development of lasting friendships. Many students return to the program
year after year and maintain contact with their classmates and teachers long
after the program ends.

Students must be entering grades 7-12 and have an “A/B” average in
prerequisite (preferably honors) courses. All courses require daily homework
and/or studying for daily tests, sometimes up to 3 hours a day. Because
the courses move at a fast pace, students must have a high degree of
motivation, persistence and self-discipline and be resolved to keep up with
daily instruction in order to do well in their course.
Students cannot enroll for courses already taken in school.
Previous students who have earned grades below a “C” in their coursework
in this program may not re-enroll. Students who have previously earned a
“C” in the program and wish to re-enroll will be considered on a case-by-
case basis. In these cases, behavior as well as academic performance will
be considered in deciding whether the student will be readmitted.
All courses are taught on an honors level. After completion of a summer
course, grades and credits may be transferred to the student’s school, or
the course can be considered non-credit with no notification to the school.
Enrollment in each course is limited in order to keep the class size small.
Courses that do not reach a minimum enrollment may have to be cancelled.
Please register as soon as possible to maximize access to courses. If a
course is cancelled, the entire course tuition will be refunded.

Junior NJNEER! June 13–17
In partnership with the LSU School of Engineering
What’s inside a toaster? How does a computer work? As a junior engineer
you will take them apart to discover all of the amazing answers inside. This
course explores all types of engineering. Not only will you make things fly,
splat, dive, hold, and grow, but you will also meet engineers, interact with
their work, and explore how they make our lives easier!
The Real Pirates of the Caribbean June 20–24
Aye, aye, mate! Pirates are not just villains with bad teeth in search of gold
from long ago. Come aboard and investigate past and present pirates,
including true stories of children buccaneers. Create a 3-dimensional pirate
ship and construct a cannon that explodes! You’ll devise a treasure map
using mathematical equations, and find another team’s treasure. As a
modern-day pirate you will journal your adventures on your very own blog!
Natural Disasters and MORE! June 27–July 1
Earth, wind, water, and fire have vastly affected our planet’s history.
Discover the amazing aspects of natural catastrophes such as tornadoes,
tsunamis, earthquakes, and floods. Create projects and receive guidance
from experts as you interpret imagery maps, calculate the expected time
for a hurricane to make landfall and locate geographical areas across
the planet that are more susceptible to certain natural disasters. Identify
temperatures, explore extreme weather patterns and create your own plan
to aid with the aftermath recovery.
Kinesiology: Bodies in Motion July 11–15
Did you know that the average human adult heart pumps between 1,500
and 2,000 gallons of blood per day? Study anatomy, physiology, and
mechanics of human body movement as you monitor your heart rate
and breathing to gain an understanding of how your body is impacted by
physical exercise. Put your microbiology skills to the test and experiment
by growing bacteria in petri dishes from a variety of surfaces and discover
what disinfectant agents prove to be the most effective in warding off
infection. Examine nutrition and gain tips as you learn how to incorporate a
healthy lifestyle into your busy school life!
Apollo to Zeus: Greek Mythology July 18–22
Take a trip back to ancient Greece, and live as the Greek gods and
goddesses. Replicate the Greeks intricate and amazing artwork and
sculptures. Explore the many Greek (and Roman) heroes, and learn about
fascinating myths that attempt to explain the mysteries of the world. Create
a modern-day tabloid exploiting many Greek secrets, and experiment with
the different forms of mythological energy, such as Prometheus’s heat (the
“fire-bringer”), Zeus’s electricity (deadly lightning bolt), or Narcissus’s light
(love for his own reflection). It’s sure to be a powerful week!

Learn how to use technology to your advantage! Using Mac computers
and operating system, you’ll create a podcast, a webpage, and a video of
the many discoveries you will find during field trips on the LSU campus.
Improve your file management and keyboarding skills
and dive into software that includes Word for Mac
suite, iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband!
Real Life CSI June 13–17
Become a scientist for a week and learn how forensic science is re-writing
history! An unseen world is right in front of us as we learn the history of the
Microbe Hunters and how much this unseen world affects us. Record and
track the numbers of reported illnesses of historic plagues and pandemics;
complete an analysis to understand the scope of these tragedies and
discuss how the cause of death changed as scientific methods have
improved. Using modern day forensics as a guide, you will locate and
classify samples of
microscopic life and collect
and analyze evidence from
your own “crime scene”. By
the end of the week, you will
have solved your first crime!

The Hidden Science of Archeology July 18–22
Discover the wonders of the world and explore the roles of
archaeologists by constructing and excavating a midden (an
archaeological dig) with artifacts of your choice. Write the story
and learn how discrepancies in history can occur. We’ll travel to
campus sites of archaeological significance and excavate using
new knowledge of coordinate grid systems to map each level of
the dig and conduct research with the use of technology. Hear from
experts and develop your own opinions about the history of our earth and
the many people who lived here before us.
