Wolford Living Hometown DreamWill Wolford ’82 has always been

passionate about St. X and the sport of

football. He was a star defensive end for

the Tigers in the early 80s, and was co-chair

of the 2005–09 Project X capital campaign

that raised $29 million. In between, he had

a successful college career at Vanderbilt

and pro career that included appearances

in three Super Bowls and three Pro Bowls,

and even landed him on the cover of

Sports Illustrated.

When he retired in 1998 and moved home

with his wife Jude to raise their three

girls, Will didn’t expect he’d ever have the

opportunity or time to become the Tigers’

head varsity football coach. When he was

approached about the position, favorable

circumstances allowed him to accept the job.

A supportive business partner (Tom Perrone

’82) at his Morgan Stanley financial advisory

practice, coupled with his kids all being in

high school or college, made the timing work.

Since taking the helm earlier this year, Will

hasn’t had to change much, as he said the

St. X culture of kids showing up on time

and trying their hardest was a core strength

Coach Mike Glaser had already developed.

He has focused on empowering his coaches

to empower players to do their best, and is

making some changes to the style of play

on both sides of the ball. Wolford believes

in a balanced offense that takes what the

defense gives you, as well as an aggressive,

blitzing defense.

When he steps on the field as head coach

for the first time, Will expects that “the

butterflies will be flying,” and he’s looking

forward to it. He’s also looking forward

to coaching the Tigers for the foreseeable

future, as he said there’s nothing he’d rather

do in his hometown than coach at St. X.

Highland Roofing – Five Generations of RamsersNot many people can say they own and

operate a family business that has been

around for over 100 years, but we have one

such business in the St. X Family. George

Ramser was born in 1835 in Alsace Lorraine,

France, where he learned the tinner trade.

He immigrated to Louisville and adapted

his skills to the roofing business. His sons

followed him in the trade, and son Louis

moved his business to the Highlands in

the early 20s.

The Ramser family continues to this day

operating as Highland Roofing Co., Inc.

Louis passed away in 1937, but his wife,

Rose, ran the business until her sons returned

from World War II. In 1965, Woody Ramser

assumed ownership and provided summer

jobs for all of his 10 children. He retired in

1981 to leave in charge the family’s first

generation St. X graduates (Steve ’70,

Bob ’71, Tom ’73, and Jim ’83). Later in

1981, Ed Hilbert ’66 joined the Ramsers on

the commercial roofing team. Today, a fifth

generation of Ramsers, Steve’s sons, Brock

’96 and Kyle ’02; Bob’s son, Nathan ’03;

and Jim’s sons, Aaron ’08 and Christopher

’12, are perpetuating the family tradition.

Bob is retired, and both Tom and Ed are

scaling back their duties.

Over the years, Highland Roofing has not

only been a wonderful business partner for

St. X, but also a generous contributor to

financial campaigns. Many of the roofs you

see on campus have been done by Highland

Roofing, including the Brother John Wills,

C.F.X. Sports Activities Center (opened in

2009) and countless renovation projects on

the main campus and ancillary buildings.

The Ramsers have also been good stewards

to St. X with their time. Steve previously

served as a member of both Saint Xavier’s

Board of Directors and the Alumni

Association Board of Directors, and he

continues to serve on the Plant Committee

as an Advisor to the Board of Directors.

Brock also dedicated himself as a member

of the Alumni Association Board of Directors

from 2002–2008, and he and his father both

have volunteered at the Alumni Phonathon.

Highland Roofing embodies everything that

St. X teaches – faith, family, hard work, and

generosity; and we are fortunate to be able

to call them X-Men.

resumed fulltime academic duties, conducted

research and completed his dissertation in

absentia. The Ph.D. was awarded in 1970.

He spent 47 years rising from an assistant

professor up to full professor. His research

concentrated on structural applications of

wood-based composite materials and the

use, reuse, and care of wood in historic

preservation and restoration. During his

tenure, he also became Director of the

Purdue Wood Research Lab, wrote over

85 technical and scientific articles and was

elected President of the Forest Products

Society in 1990.

Although retired since December, 2006,

Michael and his wife, Phyllis, continue to

live in Lafayette, Indiana in a 167-year-old

historic home which they have renovated

and completely restored. That experience

led to an applied research project. Michael

had observed that although his home was

built with yellow poplar clapboard siding

and had aged without any deterioration,

the new growth yellow poplar siding (used

during restoration and for the addition)

was deteriorating after only six years.

After much research, he is now trying to

commercialize a pressure-treated yellow

poplar lumber which would be impervious

to decay for above-ground use.

Now as a renowned scientist who has

spent his entire career pursuing research

and serving as the Director of the Purdue

University Wood Research Lab, Michael

reminisces about his days in the basement

level Chemistry lab where Brother

Bonaventure taught him not only basic

chemistry, but the value of discipline, rigor,

and attention to detail. “What I learned

from my experience at St. X was it was

not the lab facility. It was the teacher.”

Wood Science Beyond RetirementWhen Michael O. Hunt graduated from St. X

in 1953 he had no idea what career he would

pursue. Four years later after graduating

from the University of Kentucky he was still

not sure what he would do. However, while

pursuing a Master’s degree in Forestry at

Duke University, he became interested in

the particularities of wood as a material

and decided to concentrate his studies on

the characteristics and applications of wood

rather than forest management.

After completing his military service,

Michael began working for the Wood

Products Division of the Singer Company

in Pickens, South Carolina, and after a plant

consolidation he was transferred to Trumann,

Arkansas. While there, Michael’s former

advisor at Duke suggested an opening for a

professorship at Purdue University which he

accepted. He then spent a year’s sabbatical

leave at North Carolina State completing

course work mostly in engineered science

and applied math. Returning to Purdue, he

Three Retire After Years of ServiceAt the end of the 2012-13 school year, three

long-time members of the Saint Xavier’s

faculty and staff retired – Nelson Nunn, Jr.,

Sharon Roberts, and Elaine Steinberg.

Collectively, their commitment to Catholic

education totals more than 114 years, 90

of them at St. X! “Their leadership, tireless

energy, and loyalty to Saint Xavier High

School will be greatly missed,” noted prin-

cipal Frank Espinosa, when he announced

their retirements a few months ago.

Nunn served two stints at St. X (1972–1984

and 1990–2013) and held a number of

positions where his reach was beyond

the classroom. He was science teacher,

science department chair, assistant football

coach (including the ’74 and ’78 state

championship teams), assistant principal,

and principal (2004–2008). Nunn will most

miss the “everyday interaction with students

and teachers.” At May’s commencement

exercises, he was named an Honorary

graduate of the Class of 2013.

Steinberg began at St. X in 1985 as the

librarian and leaves as the director of the

assisted with the St. Joseph of Arimathea

Society and accompanied two groups of

students on mission trips to Belize.

Service Award Presented to SearsAnnually, Saint Xavier presents the Paulie

Walsh ’63† Volunteer Service Award

to an individual or group who has selflessly

served St. X by donating countless volunteer

hours. At the recent Volunteer Appreciation

Reception held at Audubon Country Club,

Kim Sears was named the 2013 recipient.

Mother of Christopher ’07 and Nicholas

’10, she becomes the third female to be

honored since the award was created in

2006. The award is named for Paulie Walsh,

a long-time Class Agent and volunteer who

embodied the true spirit of volunteerism.

Sears chaired the football parents group for

seven seasons (2006–2012), including three

seasons she had no son on the team. She

and her husband, Terry, have served as Tiger

Boosters and she has been a member of the

Tiger Booster Board since 2010. She has

also volunteered in the Campus Store during

the week of the St. X-Trinity football classic

when demand for apparel is high.

Media Center. She has seen it transform

from the card catalog to computers.

Steinberg recalls the time when there was

“one typewriter for college applications,

and we only carried reference books for in-

school use.” She looks forward to the free

time she’ll have to travel and spend with

her grandchildren.

In her 27 years at St. X, Roberts was a

dedicated chemistry teacher for the AP

and honors levels. She has been an avid

supporter of Tiger athletics and always found

time to be engaged with students outside of

the classroom. She served as moderator for

both the Chemistry Club and Culinary Club,

contributed photography to the yearbook,

Elaine Steinberg; Nelson Nunn, Honorary ’13; and Sharon Roberts retire after 90 years of service to St. X.

Class of 2013 Features 17 Merit ScholarsThe 141st graduating class of 347 young

men celebrated commencement exercises

on May 19 in Broadbent Arena. As a whole

they were largely successful as athletes

and students. The Class of 2013 featured

three perfect ACT scores, and 39 students

were recognized by the National Merit

Corporation (including 22 National Merit

Finalists, of which 17 received National

Merit Scholarships). They tallied scholarships

totaling more than $27 million and 12,084

service hours in the community throughout

the year. All of this was in addition to earning

state championships in cross country, soccer,

swimming and diving, wrestling,

tennis, and rugby.

Senior class president Joe Dawson, who

was selected among the class to speak,

was also presented the Xaverian Award, the

highest honor bestowed upon a graduating

senior. Mathematics teacher John Zickel ’71

was announced as this year’s recipient of

the Borders Excellence in Teaching Award.

Additionally, Bob Jones, Jr. ’76 was

presented the Outstanding Alumnus Award.

Bob is Associate Dean for Experiential

Programs at Notre Dame Law School.

He previously served as the Director of the

Notre Dame Legal Aid Clinic, a low-income

legal services office where Notre Dame law

students represent low-income clients as

part of their law-school training.

Recent news received from the College

Board indicates that Saint Xavier continues

to excel in Advanced Placement Testing. May

test results showed that St. X administered

664 AP Exams in 23 subjects. St. X students

earned a 91.4% passing rate (a score of 3

or higher) across all disciplines. Additionally,

all St. X students (100%) who tested in seven

of the subjects, including English Composition

and English Literature, earned passing

scores. This means that more than 30% of

the members of the Class of 2013 have

completed their college English requirements

at most universities across the country.

n 2011, when Louisville Mayor Greg

Fischer was faced with a scathing

audit citing mismanagement of the

Metropolitan Sewer District, he needed

someone to take over the utility and “right

the ship.” The person he called upon was

Louisville Water Company President and

1976 alumnus Greg Heitzman. At the time,

Greg was already planning his retirement.

However, the opportunity to apply the same

principles and leadership skills that led to

success at LWC, coupled with the opportunity

to build a unified utility that will better serve

the citizens of Metro Louisville, convinced

Greg to tackle the position of Interim

Executive Director of MSD. Mayor Fischer’s

move paid off, because in December 2012,

State Auditor Adam Edelen ’93 issued a

report stating that sound management and

control had been restored at MSD, thanks to

Greg’s leadership. It also led to an extended

career for Greg, as the Mayor asked him

to take over the reins permanently at MSD

on May 1, 2013.

What led to Greg’s success as an employee

of LWC was a commitment to the same

three values upon which the Company is

built: quality, service and value. LWC has

a long history of innovation and providing

outstanding water quality. Greg believes

that it is a commitment to these three core

values that has placed LWC among the

top five water utilities in the U.S. In June,

Louisville Pure Tap was recognized as North

America’s Best Tap Water for the second

time in five years. In 2011, Louisville Water

received international acclaim from the

American Society of Civil Engineers for the

Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement

Award for its riverbank filtration tunnel

project, beating out such notable competition

as Texas Stadium in Dallas and the Incheon

cable bridge in South Korea. This recognition

all occurred while Greg was both President

(since 2007) and Chief Engineer (1991–2007).

Maintaining affordability is the biggest

challenge Greg foresees for both LWC

and MSD. During the recent economic

downturn, he was able to successfully

steward the public funds in play at

LWC while maintaining high levels

of quality and service. In light of

aging infrastructure and increased

environmental regulations,

especially at MSD, holding true to

these core values will be difficult,

but necessary in order to complete

the work with which these major utilities

are charged.

Greg also anticipates growth opportunities.

Water is an extremely significant and

valuable resource. Louisville, unlike other

water-challenged communities, is blessed

with an abundant source in the Ohio River.

As economies of scale emerge and regulatory

control evolves, Greg expects opportunities

for growth of water services into counties

surrounding Louisville. The cyclical nature

of weather, affected by climate change,

and an increased stress on infrastructure

will also challenge the ability to maintain

affordable water and sewer service. But this

puts Louisville in a unique position to take

advantage of the “One Water” concept,

which would combine the services of

Louisville Water Company and Metropolitan

Sewer District into one utility. Now that Greg

has officially retired from LWC after 31 years

of service, his goal as Executive Director at

MSD is to explore the “One Water” plan in

an effort to best serve Metro Louisville and

maintain efficient operation of both utilities.

Incredibly, it was a St. X connection that

helped Greg begin his career at LWC. While

earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees

in Civil Engineering from the University

of Kentucky, Greg interviewed with Frank

Campbell ’48, then the Chief Engineer at

Greg Heitzman ’76 Delivers Quality, Service and Value

I

V o l u m e 4 6 • N o . 1 w w w . s a i n t x . c o m 9

LWC, who offered Greg a job in 1982.

Since then, Greg has earned an MBA

from the University of Louisville. He credits

Dr. Don Wood, a professor at UofK, Dr. Paul

Coomes, Professor of Economics at UofL,

Ballard Morton, Executive Professor in

Residence at UofL, and career mentor John

Huber ’62, LWC President from 1999–2007,

for shaping his skills and influencing his

views on leadership, management and

the economy.

Greg will devote his full energy to MSD

for the next two years. After that, he looks

forward to assisting utility companies as

a consultant, working to educate and

promote the value of water, and volunteering

with nonprofit organizations such as

WaterStep, which provides clean water

to impoverished regions of the world.

Until then, though, Greg has his hands

full leading his community to the goal of

“One Water.”
