Only a few decades ago, the Internet was still considered revolutionary. Now, the way we live has been drasticallychanged by the access that we have to the Internet. The world has never before been so connected.

The Internet is still continuing to evolve in ways that we could never have imagined. The Internet of Things is one ofthose ways.

What is the Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things describes the ability to connect everyday items to a singular online network. By connectingthese items, you have more accurate control and easier access. You can turn appliances on and off remotely via adevice that is connected to the Internet, like a smartphone or a tablet. These items can include everyday appliancesand systems. From washers and dryers, to HVAC systems and security systems.

Today, the idea of having immediate access and control over electronic equipment isn’t an idea that’s too hard tofathom. In fact, by 2008, the number of items that were connected to the Internet had already outnumbered thenumber of people that were connected!

The Growth of the Internet of Things

The concept of the Internet of Things has been around for longer than people might realize, though it is just nowgrowing at a rapid pace. With Internet access readily available throughout the world, and the cost of wirelessconnections no longer as substantial as it once was, the Internet of Things is expanding.

Just consider some of the following statistics concerning the Internet of Things:

The number of things connected to the Internet is expected to reach between 50 billion by 2020 according toCisco, and 200 billion by 2020 according to Intel.

Global spending on building the Internet of Things was around $656 billion in 2014 – that number is expectedto grow to $1.7 trillion by 2020.

By 2017, more than 80% of companies will implement IoT technologies into their business in some way.

BIoT: Building Internet of Things

Not surprisingly, with the growth of the Internet of Things, we’ve seen IoT technologies make their way into the worldof building management. Enter, the Building Internet of Things, or BIoT.

The Building Internet of Things takes the concept of IoT and applies it to functions in commercial buildings. Thinkabout all the equipment and devices in commercial buildings. HVAC, lighting, security equipment, computers, digitalsignage…the list goes on. The Building Internet of Things makes all these things more efficient and cost effective.

In short, the BIoT is:

Energy efficient

Green and sustainable

Intelligent

High performing

Operationally efficient

Integrated

The Internet of Things has made it possible for devices to communicate machine-to-machine(M2M). Here are just a few examples of how M2M communication opened huge doors inbuilding efficiency:

Control building lighting

Leaving lights on throughout the day when certain areas of the building aren’t in use is a big energy drain. Peoplemay also forget to turn lights off before leaving for the night. Now, your building’s lights can communicate, machine-to-machine, with a network. The result? You can pre-program lights to turn on and off at certain times, and turnlights off remotely from outside the building.

Pre-program heating and cooling

Wasting energy by heating or cooling your building when nobody is in it is a huge waste of money. Connect yourHVAC system to a network so that you can pre-program your heating and cooling systems to turn on and off. Youcan also automatically adjust temperatures at specific times of the day or days of the week.

Control plug load

Turning appliances and electronics off won’t stop their energy usage if they remain plugged in. But, unpluggingevery appliance or electrical device in your building on a daily basis is unmanageable. The BIoT connectselectronics such as vending machines and computers to an open architecture software to allow you to completelycut off plug load consumption when devices aren’t in use.

The Building Internet of Things helps improve the convenience, comfort and function of your building. Leveraging
