    100 Bible Verses about

    Taming YourTongue

Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good forbuilding up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of thewise brings healing.

For weall stumblein manyways. And ifanyonedoesnotstumblein what hesays, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits intothe mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as

well.Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strongwinds, theyare guided by avery small rudder wherever the will of the pilotdirects. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, aworld of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining thewhole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.

Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives hisheart, this person's religion is worthless.

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!

Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he isdeemed intelligent.

    For Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tonguefrom evil and his lips from speaking deceit;

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat

    its fruits.

A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and itsfruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! How can youspeak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the

mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on theday of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will becondemned.

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these thingsought not to be so.

It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes outof the mouth; this defiles a person.

When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains hislips is prudent.

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we

who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For we all stumble in many

ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses sothat they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit.

Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separatesclose friends.

To speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfectcourtesy toward all people.

For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarrelingceases.

The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.

To the choirmaster: to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, I will guard myways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle,so long as the wicked are in my presence.

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, thatyour passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so youmurder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do nothave, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you askwrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you notknow that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoeverwishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do yousuppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, He yearns jealously overthe spirit that he has made to dwell in us?

Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water?

So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may growup into salvation if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. As you

come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosenand precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritualhouse, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to Godthrough Jesus Christ.

The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is afool.

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ therighteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also forthe sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to knowhim, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says I know him but does notkeep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoeverkeeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may knowthat we are in him:

For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what hesays, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.

Those who say, With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who ismaster over us?

    by such a small fire!

No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall confuteevery tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of theservants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow tospeak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce therighteousness of God.

And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the

testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothingamong you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you inweakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my messagewere not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit andof power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in thepower of God.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present yourbodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual

worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by therenewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God,what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I sayto everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought tothink, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure offaith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, andthe members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are onebody in Christ, and individually members one of another.

And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive itwith joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time oftesting fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those whohear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches andpleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and goodheart, and bear fruit with patience. No one after lighting a lamp covers itwith a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those whoenter may see the light.

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, The scribes and thePharisees sit on Moses' seat, so practice and observe whatever they tell youbut not what they do. For they preach, but do not practice. They tie up heavyburdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but theythemselves are not willing to move them with their finger. They do all theirdeeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their

    fringes long,

The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah andJerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the Lord has spoken: Childrenhave I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me. The oxknows its owner, and the donkey its master's crib, but Israel does not know,my people do not understand. Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the

Lord, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged. Why will you still be struck down? Why will you continue to rebel? The wholehead is sick, and the whole heart faint.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisygong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand allmysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to removemountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if Ideliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is

    patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. Itdoes not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;

Or do you not know, brothersfor I am speaking to those who know the lawthat the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? For a marriedwoman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband diesshe is released from the law of marriage. Accordingly, she will be called anadulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if herhusband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is

not an adulteress. Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the lawthrough the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him whohas been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. Forwhile we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, wereat work in our members to bear fruit for death.

steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be

perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let himask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be givenhim.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and

    instruction.

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Hear my voice, O God, in mycomplaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy. Hide me from thesecret plots of the wicked, from the throng of evildoers, who whet theirtongues like swords, who aim bitter words like arrows, shooting from ambushat the blameless, shooting at him suddenly and without fear. They hold fastto their evil purpose; they talk of laying snares secretly, thinking, Who cansee them?

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy ofthe calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unityof the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spiritjust asyou were called to the one hope that belongs to your call one Lord, onefaith, one baptism,

Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom inthe secret heart.

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you mayknow how you ought to answer each person.

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you

are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you dounless God is with him. Jesus answered him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unlessone is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to him,How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into hismother's womb and be born? Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom ofGod.

Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with

Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father

and the Lord Jesus Christ. We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love ofevery one of you for one another is increasing. Therefore we ourselves boastabout you in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith in all yourpersecutions and in the afflictions that you are enduring. This is evidence ofthe righteous judgment of God, that you may be considered worthy of thekingdom of God, for which you are also suffering

Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who hadcome from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands thatwere defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eatunless they wash their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders, and whenthey come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. Andthere are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing ofcups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) And the Pharisees andthe scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not walk according to thetradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?

Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproofleads others astray.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming uponyou. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold

and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you andwill eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back byfraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reachedthe ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of themysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found

trustworthy. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged byyou or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I am notaware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is theLord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden indarkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one willreceive his commendation from God.

In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you

must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk fromyour mouth.

Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by sodoing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is aman of understanding. Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; whenhe closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospelof God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holyScriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according tothe flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the

Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about theobedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,

After the uproar ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouragingthem, he said farewell and departed for Macedonia. When he had gonethrough those regions and had given them much encouragement, he came toGreece. There he spent three months, and when a plot was made against himby the Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he decided to return through

Macedonia. Sopater the Berean, son of Pyrrhus, accompanied him; and of theThessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy;and the Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus. These went on ahead and werewaiting for us at Troas,

The north wind brings forth rain, and a backbiting tongue, angry looks.

With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by

    knowledge the righteous are delivered.

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be calledchildren of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us isthat it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what wewill be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall belike him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes inhim purifies himself as he is pure. Everyone who makes a practice of sinningalso practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared to

take away sins, and in him there is no sin.

Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slavesto much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young womento love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working athome, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may

    not be reviled.

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae: Grace to you andpeace from God our Father. We always thank God, the Father of our LordJesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesusand of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid upfor you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, thegospel,

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on hertongue.

Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness uttersdeceit. There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongueof the wise brings healing. Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue isbut for a moment. Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those

who plan peace have joy. No ill befalls the righteous, but the wicked are filledwith trouble.

The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue willbe cut off.

With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.

Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back on him whostarts it rolling. A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth worksruin.

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit. Youlove evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. SelahYou love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue. But God will break youdown forever; he will snatch and tear you from your tent; he will uproot youfrom the land of the living. Selah The righteous shall see and fear, and shalllaugh at him, saying,

My lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit.

After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel. Now Ahaziah fellthrough the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sentmessengers, telling them, Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this sickness. But the angel of the Lord said toElijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king ofSamaria, and say to them, Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are

going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Now therefore thus saysthe Lord, You shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up,but you shall surely die. So Elijah went. The messengers returned to theking, and he said to them, Why have you returned?

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christloved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even benamed among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor

foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there bethanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexuallyimmoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has noinheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How greata forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believesin him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Soninto the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might besaved through him.

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination tohim: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, aheart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a falsewitness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

My lips will pour forth praise, for you teach me your statutes. My tongue willsing of your word, for all your commandments are right. Let your hand beready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts.

    He loved to curse; let curses come upon him! He did not delight in blessing;

may it be far from him! He clothed himself with cursing as his coat; may itsoak into his body like water, like oil into his bones! May it be like a garmentthat he wraps around him, like a belt that he puts on every day!

    Who does not slander with his tongue and does no evil to his neighbor, nortakes up a reproach against his friend;

But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the

sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in thelake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, anddiscerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believesin him should not perish but have eternal life.

Whoever meddles in a quarrel not his own is like one who takes a passing dogby the ears. Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death is theman who deceives his neighbor and says, I am only joking! For lack of woodthe fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases. Ascharcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindlingstrife.

The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is afool. When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoeverrestrains his lips is prudent.

My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, have given your pledgefor a stranger, if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in thewords of your mouth, then do this, my son, and save yourself, for you have

A Psalm of David. O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell onyour holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speakstruth in his heart; who does not slander with his tongue and does no evil to his

neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend; in whose eyes a vileperson is despised, but who honors those who fear the Lord; who swears tohis own hurt and does not change; who does not put out his money at interestand does not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these thingsshall never be moved.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable inyour sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my handand no one has heeded, because you have ignored all my counsel and wouldhave none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock whenterror strikes you, when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamitycomes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Then theywill call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but willnot find me.

Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all the daylong.

As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man forkindling strife. The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they godown into the inner parts of the body. Like the glaze covering an earthen

    vessel are fervent lips with an evil heart. Whoever hates disguises himself withhis lips and harbors deceit in his heart; when he speaks graciously, believehim not, for there are seven abominations in his heart;
