What does it mean to be alive?
By Nicolas Vasquez
Thousands of thingsThere are thousands of things for thousands of
separate animals, fungi, bacterium, algae, and any other life form out there that would classify it as alive.
There are some traits, however, that overlap with more animals than others. Therefore, us humans consider those traits to be what makes something
alive.
Human vs. Jellyfish
Traits of humans
Active cardiovascular system
Warm body
Adaptation to environment
Requires fuel or energy
Made of cells
Traits of jellyfish
Active loose web of nerves
Active stingers
Dead human
No flowing blood
No flowing blood=cold body
Doesn't respond to anything
Has no need for fuel
Has inactive cells
Dead jellyfish
Doesn't respond to anything
Active stingers
Conclusion
As we can see, here is almost nothing in common between a jellyfish and a human, and yet both of them are considered alive. Henceforth, we can
conclude that there is no one trait that determines if something is alive or not
Winner!
......Let's call it a draw.
