FROM AN EXECUTIVE’S PEN…… Hi, my name is Bruce Abbott also known as Monk. I was elected on to the RSA Executive at the

last AGM.

Who am I? Well I was born in Waiuku in 1948 to a family of 6 children.

As a boy I grew up in the Southern Waikato and went to school in Tokoroa. I left school and

joined the Army in January 1964 as a Regular Force Cadet (Parkinson Class). On graduating in

May 66 I was posted to Papakura in the Corp of RNZ Signals. After bouncing around the camps

in the North Island and rising in the ranks I finally retired at the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2

and settled in Waiouru.

Whilst in the services I married and raised 4 daughters. On retirement I went into the hospitality

trade and set up the RSA in Waiouru with their first Secretary / Manager. In 1996 I decided it

was time to move for the betterment of the family’s schooling; so off we went to Onehunga where

I was the Assistant Manager of the RSA. I was made redundant there in 1999 so went to Howick

RSA as the Night Manager for a year before returning to my trade as a Logistics Clerk at

Middlemore Hospital.

After the passing of my wife in 213 and my girls growing up and leaving home I decided to finally

retire and moved to Kamo. I now enjoy the task of Grandad to my 7 Grandkids who I see on a

very regular basis.

My hobbies are Darts and Pool.

With darts it was where I got the nickname of Monk as I am on the Executive of the RNZRSA

Darts Council and the Interdominion Darts Council. The RNZRSA Darts is the only RSA sport

that travel to Australia to play NSW and Vic RSL on a yearly basis.

I look forward to serving you the members to the best of my ability and if you have any queries

about the RSA feel free to speak to me and I will try to answer them for you if I am able.

Rental Property Needed…. Do you have a rental property available for rent or know someone who does? The home we have been renting is no longer available to rent and we are looking for a new longer term rental property. Ideally we would like a 2 or 3 bedroom within the Whangarei area. At this meeting we will be having a silent auction followed by a donation of non-perishable food items to the Salvation Army. Most of our women will be donating an assortment of canned foods & other non-perishable items. If anyone else would like to join in there is a collection box at the bar. Line Dancers – Happy Feet Dance Day – Tuesday & Friday Instructor – Donna Bryant Venue - Clubrooms Start Time – 10:30am Tuesday Start Time – 10:00am Friday Friday is a good day for those new to line dancing. It is the day we learn the various steps and terms used in Line Dancing and everyone is welcome. Tuesday morning we put it all together and dance. There’s no better way to exercise the body & mind.

To achieve this we need to ensure we have your current email address. We have been working on updating our records and have contacted a number of members already. If you haven’t heard from us or did not receive the recently emailed Hannah Street Special Bulletin please contact the office on 09 438 3792 or email us with your details. If you do not have an email address let us know and we will note our records to send all communications to you via New Zealand Post.

Scooter Support Services (Welfare) have a Mobility Scooter available for a member to hire. Suitable for flat and level surfaces. It also has a bit of grunt for reasonably steep inclines and should get up the steepest hill in Whangarei. As with all things for hire certain conditions will apply. If you are interested please contact Colleen on 09 438 9680.

Hearing Aid Batteries We have a variety of batteries available for members at reception for a small donation. Come along to see if we have what you need.
