Regional trade union leaders, who was attending the WFTU’s Asia Pacific Regional Meeting in NUBE Training Centre in Port Dickson, were inspired by the speech given by WFTU Secre- tary General George Mavrikos, today during the Young Trade Unionist Seminar. Mavrikos, who has been an elected unionist since 1975 and WFTU’s Sec- retary General since the 15th WFTU Congress in Havana, Cuba, walked the audience through the inspiring strug- gle of WFTU in campaigning against imperialism, racism, poverty, environ- mental degradation and exploitation of workers under capitalism. The World Federation of Trade Un- ions (WFTU) was established in 1945 to replace the International Federation of Trade Unions. Its mission was to bring together trade unions across the world in a single international organi- zation. “We are optimistic on the present and the future direction of the class strug- gle oriented movement,” said Mavrikos during the seminar. Historical experience, proves that the great achievements of the trade unions and the working class have been ac- complished when the trade unions were guided in their economic struggle. “We and all the other trade union lead- ers will work towards strengthening all the trade unions in every country,” lauded Mavrikos before winding down his speech. Mavrikos also took some questions from the floor, one of it being the role of WFTU in development women and young trade unionists, which was posted by NUBE’s Assistant General Secretary Sis A Karuna. In response to that, he said that WFTU are very serious in its effort to promote trade unionism among youths and women, and this can be seen in the actions taken. “We had 2 youth conferences prior to this and next year we are organising a conference for working women in India,” said Mavrikos. He also answered few other questions asked by NUBE President Tan Eng Hong, NUBE Honorary Treasurer Chen Ka Fatt from the floor.
