Summer 2017 kicked off nicely last month with many different festive activities. First off, we had the Annual Veteran Administration Carnival Day at the VA campus. Five Belmont Village admin and staff members volunteered their time at the carnival and set up all the booths and then manned the watermelon booth for a couple of hours. It was a warm day, but all the Vets and family members who attended the fair were appreciative and had a great time. Also last month, many residents, family members and staff members biked to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. We biked for 12 straight hours - raising at least $10 every 15 minutes. Great job to everyone who participated and to those who donated money. Every little bit helps and residents at Belmont Village always step to the occasion! We will continue these efforts to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease and then walk at the Annual Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease in Santa Monica on September 24. Toward the end of June, the Luau that was held was out of this world. The food was amazing and the Polynesian dancers on the Pool Patio were so entertaining. Residents and loved ones had a great time in the sun! Great job to Alicia, Summer, Greg and, of course, Chef Jean Yves for the amazing cuisine. So now that June is behind us, let’s look on to July and the rest of the summer. Save the Dates: July 4th is always a festive time and a monumental time for summer. The BBQ that we host is amazing and such a great time, so make sure to invite your loved ones. August 6th we are going to celebrate our 8th Annual Anniversary Party. We have two large celebrations every year and this first one is NOT to be missed. Please be sure you RSVP and invite your family and friends. Have a great month, everyone. I’ll see you out there. ~ James Employees volunteering at Veteran’s Carnival

DRCS Health Hintsby Zara Khatchatrian

What Is Fall Prevention?Falls are the number one cause

of injury, hospital visits due totrauma, and death from an injuryamong people age 65 and older. Itis estimated that one in threeolder adults falls each year. Fallsamong older adults is a seriousissue, but research has shown thatmany fall risks can be reduced.

There are many different factorsthat can increase the risk offalling. These include:

• Past fallsHazards in the home andcommunityProblems walkingBalance problemsWeaknessImproper footwear

• Chronic diseasesMultiple medicationsPoor visionDepressionMemory problemsBehaviors like rushing

Because there are manydifferent factors that contribute tofalls, there are different

recommendations for reducingfall risks. These include:

Talking with a healthprofessional to identify and treatmedical problems that might leadto falls. This includes discussingany previous falls with the doctor, reviewing medications with adoctor or pharmacist, and gettingvision checked at least once a year.Getting Regular Physical Activity –making a plan to have regularphysical activity either in a class orat home. The most effective typesof activities to reduce fall riskimprove balance, strength, flexibility, and endurance. BeingAware of Safety Hazards in theHome and Community – thisincludes looking at the home toidentify fall hazards and makingchanges for safety, also calledhome modifications. It is alsoimportant not to rush and to beaware of fall risks when outside.
