Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, preacher to the Papal Household, describes baptism in the Holy Spirit and the Charismatic Renewal in his book, Come Creator Spirit, Meditations on the Veni Creator Spiritus. Here are some excerpts that I found inspiring and renewing. “The new Pentecost is actual and it is happening now. It always was so, but in the last century it has taken on new proportions of a scale never known before...many seriously believe that this is the greatest spiritual upsurge in all the history of the Church: in a mere eighty years from zero to about four hundred million people.”

“In this context we need to take note of what is called the

baptism of, or in, the Holy Spirit, which is the special grace at the core of all of this vast spiritual revival. It occurs as a rite of very simple gestures, shared in an attitude of humility and repentance and personal readiness to become little children ‘for of such is the kingdom.’ It is a renewal and a reactivation and actualization, not only of baptism, but of all that Christian initiation involves.”

“Those who want it prepare themselves, not only by confessing and repenting sincerely of their sin, but also by taking part in meetings where they receive teaching and where they come into a living and joyous contact with the great truths and realities of the faith: the love of God, sin, salvation, new life, transformation in Christ, charisms, and the fruits of the Spirit. And all of this is in an atmosphere marked chiefly by a profound sense of belonging and being loved and cared for. The baptism in the Holy Spirit … this is the first way we perceive the Holy Spirit, as transforming us from within, giving us a desire to praise God and a taste for praise, leading us to discover a new joy in life, opening our mind to understand the Scripture, and above all teaching us to proclaim Jesus, our Lord.’”

Fr. Cantalamessa describes the work of the prayer group: It is living and joyous; it praises God; it provides teaching on the realities of the faith – the love of God, sin, salvation, new life, transformation in Christ, charisms, and the fruits of the Spirit; it provides an atmosphere of belonging, being loved and cared for.

Let us renew our prayer group commitment to carry out the work of the Holy Spirit reaching more people with the life transforming message of God’s love and power. And let us pray for each other.

Fr. Cantalamessa asks, “What do we individually need to make it possible for each one of us to experience Pentecost in this way? “

First we need to ask the Father, consistently and persistently, to send us the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus, and actually to

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On the evening of January 2nd, Fr. Jim Northrop and Fr. Cal Christiansen celebrated a Mass consecrating the ministry of WWCCR to Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit. For all those who participate in the life of the Charismatic Renewal and with the many people who gathered, we entrusted our hearts and our life of faith to Jesus through the intercession of Our blessed Mother.

I believe understanding the mystery of the union between Mary and the Trinity is important in our life of faith. Fr. Michael Gaitly explains the mystery in this way in 33 Days to Morning Glory . . .

“ ….the Father, the Son, and Mary, who is always united with the Holy Spirit (while remaining a creature), do not live along parallel lines. Rather, Jesus, Mary and the Holy Spirit are always united together in one movement “upward” to the Father, and whenever we turn to one of them, we join all of them in their one upward movement. They are not in competition; they don’t take away from each other. Rather, they form a unity and work as a team---though with different roles -- to bring all back to the Father.”

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone understood this truth? Perhaps, you could share this with others like I am sharing it with you. A Marian Consecration to Jesus through Mary is not a one-time event, but a way of life. Our Father was the first person to make an entrustment to Mary when He entrusted His only beloved Son to her.

Thank you, Father God, thank you, Mary, for your Fiat!

Let us invite Mary and the Holy Spirit to accompany us on this years Lenten journey. What new insights and revelations are awaiting us? I know that the Spirit of the living God is all we need to get through the trials of life. I know many of you face great suffering of many kinds, including watching loved ones suffer. Pope St. John Paul II wrote a beautiful encyclical on the Meaning of Christian Suffering, “Salvifici Doloris.” May this message bring you deeper into the mystery of salvific love, exemplified by Jesus in His passion and cross.

“Suffering which is present in so many different forms are present to unleash love in the human person… The world of human suffering calls forth another world, the world of human love…. Suffering is present in the world in order to release love.”

May your Lent be one of sacrifice and praise. Jesus and Mary love you, Sue+

expect the Father to answer! We need expectant faith, a faith full of expectancy! Saint Bonaventure asks, to whom does the Holy Spirit come?

And he answers, with his usual preciseness, ‘He comes to the ones who love him, who invite

him, who eagerly await him.’ It is not possible to count the immense number of people who, in the twentieth century, have felt the thrill of the Spirit in their soul when, joined together with others, they plead for the Spirit’s coming in the words of the Pentecostal

chorus: “Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me. Melt me, mould me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me.” Come Creator Spirit.Jean Beers is a member of St. Hubert Parish in Langley and Living Light Prayer Group.

I love speaking to the Lord in His own language. When we pray in tongues, it is the Holy Spirit within us (1 Cor 14:2) who speaks for us. It is an intimate and amazing way to speak to the One I love, and wholoves me.

It didn’t start that way for me. In the early seventies, I was prayed over for Baptism in the Spirit where it was expected I would speak in tongues. I didn’t. I was heartbroken. The next day, I sobbed in front of the tabernacle because I didn’t receive the gift of tongues, and wondered what was wrong with me. When my pity party at the tabernacle finally came to an end, the Lord asked, “Which do you want more, Me or the gifts.” I answered I wanted Him most of all.

Fr. Cantalamessa, in his book, Come, Creator Spirit (pg. 224) says insisting that everyone receive the gift of tongues would be to, “…give it a status of its own and remove it from the ambit of the charisms which, by definition, are gifts that God gives to whom He wills and when He wills it.”Honestly, I can’t say that I remember a specific moment after that when the gift of tongues began operating in me. Like so much of the journey, it was something that He grew over time within me. What I do know is what a wonderful and useful gift tongues has become in my life. St. Paul says that he is glad he has a greater gift of tongues (1Cor 14:18) and that he wishes everyone to have the gift of tongues (1 Cor 14:5).

It’s true that speaking in tongues is a gift I use mainly in a personal or, more or less, private way. I have given prophetic words in tongues when deeply compelled by the Spirit to do so in a time and place where it’s likely someone will interpret. Such was the case at a leadership conference when Jim Murphy gave the

interpretation which was from Revelations (Rev 3:7-8).Often when I sing in tongues in private or public, the words are followed immediately by singing the same thing in English. Most often, they are words of praise or encouragement.

More recently, the Spirit asked me to pray for others as part of Fire Tunnel. He asked me to pray in tongues over each person. As I did, I also received a prophetic image and message for each person. It was an amazing experience of God’s personal love for each person.St. Paul also says that he wishes everyone would have the gift of prophecy (1 Cor 14:5) because it plays such a critical role in revealing God’s heart and building up the community publicly. Still, whatever builds us up as an individual also builds up the community. All the parts need to be strong to make the body whole, as each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good (1 Cor 12:7).

For me, using the gift of tongues does so much to build my faith. I also find that using the gift of tongues builds up the other gifts within me, because it is a part of surrendering all of me to the One who first loved me.I love to worship the Lord with wild abandon using His gift of tongues within me. There is a great sense of freedom. If I don’t know the words to a song, I can just sing in tongues, with the tune provided of course, so it’s not interrupting others prayer or worship. All the gifts have their place, and it’s not one over the other. God gives to all as He pleases. I’m quite sure that using the gift of tongues is pleasing to Him and I love the freedom I have in this gift to please Him, to adore Him, to tell Him in His own words how much I love Him and being loved by Him.
