The Makings of a Preist – part 7. Graduation vs. Ordination Graduation is a university granting a degree to a person which serves as a testament that the individual completed an academic tract ac-cording to the norms and standards of the uni-versity. Graduation does not necessarily set someone up for a way of life. Many college stu-dents can spend four years of study in a par-ticular field and get a job which has nothing to do with what they studied. Yes, for an example a student in medical school will most likely end up being a nurse or doctor. But for an example, I know someone who studied geology and ended up having to go back to school for law because there were no jobs at the time in geol-ogy. Yes, a seminarian earns degrees and diplomas but it is his ordination which sets him up for a life of priestly service. Ordination serves as a ritual where the people show their support for his ordination and the Church by the laying on of hands, by a bishops, sets the man apart from the rest and putting a mark on his soul gives him the responsibly to offer sacrifice for the people of God. And so after years of formation and study and the approval of the Formation Staff and Rector of the seminary the names of the candidates are sent to the bishop. Before receiving any one of the minor and major orders the seminarian must write, by hand, a letter asking to receive the order and state that he does it freely and on his own. Then an ordination date is set. The word seminary means “seed bed” and serves as a place of prayer, discernment, and training. Just because a man enters the semi-nary it does not mean he will become a priest. And the beauty of the time it takes between en-tering and being ordained really helps the man to make this big “step” in his life. Even for those who leave the seminary I think the experience still helps them to be great men of faith. More to come… Rev. Fr. Stephen A. Saffron
