PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

School is Business as Usual As we are all aware, Australia has also been exposed to the COVID-19 virus with the media reporting a number of cases on the North Coast. Kyogle High School remains committed to the wellbeing of our school community and as such we are following the advice of the Department of Education and Department of Health. Kyogle High School remains open with all classes operating as normal. Earlier this week I sent out two seperate letters outlining steps we have taken to ensure the safety of students and staff and I will continue to provide updates as we are informed of changes that may affect our school. There are a number of students who are unwell with heavy colds, as well as a number of families who have chosen, or advised by Health Care professionals, to self isolate. We are providing workbooks for these students on request. Our staff have spent time developing resources and placing them on an online platform in the unlikely event schools are closed before the Easter holidays. Students 7-10 will be taken through how to access this platform and if the need arises, parents will be provided with a step by step guide to support their student learning from home. These resources will only be actioned by the school if the school is officially closed. The Department of Education has also provided online ‘learning from home ‘ resources which can be accessed by:

https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/curriculum/learning-from-home/teaching-and-learning-resources.html Please support the school by encouraging students to: 1. Wash hands regularly and thoroughly 2. Sneeze into your elbow or a tissue,

disposing of the tissue straight away and then washing your hands

3. Stay at home if you are unwell. Students and staff who show signs of being unwell through the day will be sent home.

Stay well and safe. Gae Masters

VACCINATIONS NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM: Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

In 2020 the following vaccines will be offered: Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to:

• read all the information provided

• complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive

• return the completed consent form to their child’s school

• ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic. Please note that, to improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses dur-ing Year 7 or 8 (for HPV and DTP vaccination) and during Year 10 or 11 (for Meningococcal ACWY vaccination). Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/ Pages/withdraw_consent.aspx.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic either as a physical card or a text message sent to the mobile number recorded on the consent form. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories.

NEW BOOKS AT THE LIBRARY!

ENGLISH FACULTY

In 2020, Kyogle High School will once again participate in the Premier's Reading Challenge. We encourage all students in Years 7-9 to become involved in the challenge, as a way to foster a love of reading here at our school. Many books on the PRC list are available in the school library and of course we are constantly adding to that list as each year passes! Students in Years 7-9 are required to read a minimum of 20 books for the period of the Challenge (finishes on the 28th of August 2020), of which at least 15 are drawn from the PRC list. As a way to boost support for this Challenge, time will be set aside in English lessons for students of Years 7 and 8 to complete reading. Participants who reach the minimum 20 books receive a certificate from the Challenge and Mrs. Kershaw in the library is also arranging prizes to keep up the motivation! We really hope to build on the success of last year and make this year an even better one for the Challenge. Let's get to it!

Mr. Upsall Premier's Reading Challenge Coordinator

TAS DEPARTMENT continued Year 7 Ag/Food Tech Mandatory: Year 7 cooked some healthy wholemeal ham and zucchini muffins. Many stu-dents cited not being a fan of savoury muffins, although most decided they weren’t that bad after tasting them! On Friday students learnt how to make juice with vegetables and wheatgrass that we grew. There were a few surprises with the flavours, with all agreeing that the watermelon juice was the best.

Thank you to parents and carers who will make payments for TAS electives and Tech Mandatory contributions. This helps us continue to purchase materials for students to create amazing projects, which can be taken home when complete. Mrs Kat Byrnes Head Teacher TAS
