PRINCIPAL’s REPORT 6 Welcome Welcome back to Term Two! I am excited for next week when many students will venture back to school. If you are on Facebook but not on TPHS website, search us and look at the short clip by our Leadership Team – made by their own initiative. Thank you girls and guys for your words of support. Students, parents and teachers have worked hard to transition to on-line learning. All associated information has been sent via email and parents should save the documents for future reference. ANZAC DAY At The Ponds High School, we have been proud of our excellent and engaging ANZAC Ceremonies that have tapped into families and guests from the local area. This was replaced with a 10 minute presentation prepared by the HSIE faculty, incorporating one minute of silence. Thank you to students like Jeramie, Year 12 Principal’s Representative, who played the Last Post and the Reveille at the end of his driveway keeping the Anzac Spirit alive. May 2020

SCHOOL UPGRADES I thought there would not be much to say in this newsletter as we sent out Week 3 updates this week, however, there are other updates to share.

The school looks great – thanks to rain and the hard work of our General Assistants: Peter and Bob. The work completed includes:

Replacing the lights outside the hall with LED lights. Electrical upgrades. The HSIE space – pictured in the last newsletter. Weeding and mulching the gardens. Drainage in the senior area has been fixed and completed. Extension to the bike racks area. Hanging of artworks in HSIE new open space classroom. With no pollution, the views of the green grounds and the crystal clear mountains are amazing!

MERITS The TPHS Merit System involves collecting 3 KLA small certificates and ‘cashing them in’ for KLAs which contribute to higher awards. We have focused on KLA certificates to denote recent online presence and excellence. TPHS Front Office staff sent by post over 200 KLA certificates for students brilliantly engaging in the new learning environment.

EXECUTIVE CONFERENCE Last Friday the Executive Team met, well-spaced out, in the Library to discuss Validation and the future directions that The Ponds High School would like to head. We are at the conclusion of the last planning cycle and are looking to the next 4 years of planning. In the near future, we are looking for parents who would like to contribute to this planning cycle.

NEW MEDIA ROOM Staff at The Ponds High School now have access to a new Media Room. This facility has a production quality video camera with access to a green screen and television backdrop. In addition to this video camera, there is a smaller camera setup to capture work created on a light board (backlit glass panel used with fluorescent pens). A Rode Podcaster has also been setup, enabling staff to create audio files for students. Professional development will be commencing next week on the use of this equipment.

VISUAL ARTS Stage 4, 5 and 6 Visual Arts students have been working hard to continue to develop their technical skills and art making techniques whilst working from home. Teachers and students have been challenged during this time to find new and exciting ways of creating works at home, without having all of the usual art making materials available to them that we have on a daily basis whilst working in our Visual Arts Studio spaces.

Please enjoy a collection of works from our Visual Arts students across Years 7 – 12.

Kim Morrison Relieving Head Teacher CAPA

Year 8 MUSIC "The ongoing adventure of online learning in Term 2 sees Year 8 challenging themselves in new and exciting ways. In Music, we're doing our best to challenge and support our students using a variety of music learning experiences, all delivered through our fantastic online learning platform CANVAS. This term we are diving head first into the world of 'The Blues' and exploring the music of several well-known musicians who have had an impact on the musical landscape we see today. To build on

their theoretical knowledge and utilise techniques and skills they learn as a part of this unit, Year 8 will be composing their very own '12 Bar Blues' composition, using the online music composition software known as 'Flat'. We're incredibly fortunate in music that there is a multitude of learning tools that we can utilise at this challenging time for learning. I look forward to seeing all the fantastic compositions when they are completed!" Mr Nick Macfarlane Music Teacher Year 8 Music-Coordinator

YEARS 9 & 10 MUSIC Elective music students in Years 9 and 10 have been studying Australian music. In these examples, students were asked to compose and arrange a song in a traditional colonial folk song style. The song was to fit the style and the time period both musically and lyrically. Some students chose to write their own lyrics inspired by the stories of our colonial history, and some researched famous poems from writers such as Banjo Patterson, Henry Lawson or Dorothea Mackellar. The lyrics were then linked to each musical note to create the finished product. Mr Cameron Kinsey Music Teacher

Stage 4 Agriculture and Food Technologies

Ms Briggs Stage 4 students are very eggcited and have been experimenting with recycled items to grow indoor microgreens using egg cartons and eggshells, (Ms Briggs made a Frida Kahlo inspired one), from our handmade Gnocchi and Mini Banana Bread Loaf practicals. We are not ‘Farmers’, however, we are growing a selection of herbs such as chives, oregano, basil, rocket and baby spinach. These will be planted in TPHS Ag plot garden beds and used for the scheduled Assessment Task during Term 1. All students are busy looking after their Self-Watering Planter project at home, monitoring and recording growth and bringing in soil samples for analysis!

UNIVERSITY UAC – Equity Scholarships Equity Scholarships (ES) help financially disadvantaged students with the costs associated with tertiary study. Details of requirements for individual scholarships can be found on the institution websites. UAC - Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS) -Also know as Early Entry Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS) are one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission to Year 12 students. They do this by using criteria other than (or in addition to) the ATAR. You must apply through UAC for undergraduate admission in 2019–20 to be eligible for SRS. Find out more UAC - Access and Scholarships Programs Brochure This year UAC’s new Access and Scholarships Programs brochure has a summary of information on applying for access and scholarship programs through UAC. Download the brochure. Educational Access Schemes (EAS) - UAC Universities acknowledge that difficult circumstances can prevent students from reaching their true potential, particularly if their educational performance has been affected by long-term disadvantage eg. Mental health, EAL/D. EAS can help you get in to Uni if your ATAR is below the course cut-off. Find out more.
