Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Japanese Sister School Visit
This week we hosted a group of students and one senior teacher from Akatsuki Junior High School. This is the school’s fourth visit to our College. Thank you to all the staff, parents and students who have helped make their week in Australia a truly memorable experience. In particular, I wish to acknowledge Ms Elisabetta D’Amore who has overseen the visit and ensured our visitors had ‘buddies’; a broad exposure to Australian culture; and an array of educational and social activities. A Highlight of the week was the ‘Melbourne City Experience’, which incorporated visiting a number of key landmarks including the State Library, Federation Square and the Shrine of Remembrance.
For our students, our visitors provided them with the opportunity to practice their Japanese language skills and participate in a number of Japanese cultural activities including calligraphy, art and dance.
Curriculum Day
Wednesday August 23rd was a Curriculum Day. The agenda provided time for staff to work in their Teaching and Learning Teams and commence some Term 4 planning. There was also some time spent on the Behavioural Matrix that has been developed by the Student Engagement Team. This will provide greater consistency across the College and align our actions with the College values. The final session of the day provided an opportunity for Mini Schools to reflect on their Vision Statements and consider these in line with the College’s Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan. As a College, we are driven by quite clear goals around student achievement, students’ responsibility for their learning and a commitment to a caring and cooperative school environment.

Middle Years – Mentor – The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
Any of us that have had or worked with teenagers know that the teen years (andsometimes even young people in their early 20’s) can be challenging! The Year 8Mentors will leverage off Steven Covey’s very successful book, The 7 Habits ofHighly Effective Teens to provide a series of lessons aimed at helping our Year8’s build their focus and effectiveness as they navigate the Middle Years ofschooling. Covey suggests that highly effective teens –
Are proactive (Take responsibility for their life) Begin with the end in mind (put their goals into focus) Put first things first (know how to prioritise) Think win-win (a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual
benefit in all their interactions) Seek first to understand and then to be understood Synergise (are able to work in teams, value difference, are able to apply old
knowledge to new problems) Sharpen the saw (maintain balance in all aspect of their life: physical,
social/emotional, mental, and spiritual)
Senior School - Reporting, Assessments, Pathways
As we move towards the end of the term there is a lot of activity in the SeniorSchool particularly preparing Year 12 students for their final exams; providing themwith information about post-school courses, open days and scholarships; andrunning lots of catch up sessions to make sure our students are as prepared asthey can be.
If you have not already checked, the GPA’s have been updated. Make sure youtake time to look at them. If you have any questions or concerns make sure youmake contact with the relevant subject teacher.

This year the Years 5/6 Students worked with Mr Johnson during class time to create a Nesting Box. This Biannual Project has been a massive success in relating the sustainability issues of native animals in the bush. Six Years 5/6’s classes went on the Excursion to a bush site where they installed the Nesting Boxes and rotated through a range of activities over the day. With huge thanks to Sonia Sharkey from ‘South West Goulbourn Landcare’ who assisted with the coordination of the event. Students had a fantastic time digging up Koorie artefacts; looking at a huge range of animal skeletons; digging around for scorpions; reverse treasure hunt and building cubby houses. To top it off a Barbeque was provided by the College and even a bit of excitement with the bus getting stuck on the way in to the site that needed to be hauled out so we could go home at the end of the day.

MRC Community Garden
We went to Docklands, we all got on the bus, we went for two days because there were so many of us.
We learnt about Simple Machines and we went to the park, we learnt about robots but we left before dark.
1OO Days of School
Excursion to Lego Education and Learning Centre
We’ve been out in the garden, weeding and planting, we’ve watered the garden, and it’s looking enchanting.
Circle time has become part of our day, we see all our friends and a “Good Morning” we say.
Community Day
Community Days, they’re fun to remember, there’s one coming up at the start of
September.
We learnt about poetry, and its various forms, we worked really hard, it’s part of our norms.
We celebrated the 100 days, we celebrated in different ways.

How can we engage children with science?
A Van De Graff Generator is a device that produces static electricity in a consistent current by rotating a belt of triboelectric material (A triboelectric material is a substance that produces electricity when rubbed against another triboelectric material, such as a rubber balloon and human hair) such as silk inside of a metal sphere to allow for the sphere to receive a charge.
The beauty of this method of generating static electricity is that because the belt never ends, a Van De Graff generator can supply a consistent amount of electricity for extended periods of time.
Students from Years 5‐11 experimented and enjoyed the study

Well into the flu season, it is important to keep our children healthy. Children are two to three times more likely than adults to get sick with the flu. Usually, the flu is spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. Occasionally, people get the flu from touching a germ‐infested surface. It is important to know the difference between cold and flu. Common symptoms of the flu include high fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, chills, sore throat, exhaustion and dry cough. Children may also have nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Often cold symptoms come on gradually and they include stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and hacking cough. SIMPLE STEPS FOR KEEPING YOUR CHILD HEALTHY: The best way to prevent your child from getting the flu is to take him/her to get a flu vaccine. Talk to your child about practicing good health habits, such as:
Washing hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds
Covering mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing‐preferably into the
inside of the elbow or with a tissue and disposing of the tissue immediately into the bin.
Avoiding sharing drinks, water
bottles, eating utensils and mobile phones.
Avoiding touching their eyes, nose,
and mouth
You can help prevent the flu from spreading at home by disinfecting
Frequently touched surfaces, toys,
and other commonly shared items.
You can prevent spreading illness to others by keeping your sick children home from school until they have been without fever for 24 hours. It is important for your sick child to get rest and drink plenty of fluids.
