Developing independence

• Homework set on Class Charts: lesson content set on Microsoft Teams.

• Homework will gradually increase to 1 hour per night to encourage independence and resourcefulness.

• All class work will be set on Microsoft Teams to support students who are self-isolating or shielding. Students bring their work into school when they return or submit if isolating.

• If we go to a further lockdown we will simply shift all teaching to Microsoft Teams. Students are being taught how to access this.

• Equipment and planners.• Knowledge Organisers.

The Importance of Reading

“Reading is the master skill of secondary school. Skilled reading, writing and talking is crucial for our students to succeed." Alex Quigley, the National Content Manager at the Education Endowment Foundation.

A direct correlation between exam success and how much a student reads for pleasure

Changes in exams from 2017 means wordier questions in subjects such as Maths and Science, requiring a reading age of 15+

Government guidelines suggest 15 minutes or more of reading each night.

Students must be reading appropriately challenging books (roughly, if they struggle to read five words or more on one page, the book may be too difficult).

Parents may still have to share read to encourage this!

Discuss news with your child- there's a lot of it around at the moment! It's vital children have a sound understanding of the world around them in order to provide context for any texts encountered in school.

Accelerated Reader coming soon!

Accelerated reader is an online portal which tests pupils comprehension and inference skills, relating to the book they have recently read. The system tracks reading progress or dips in knowledge, and is designed to look like a fun quiz, promoting engagement. The programme is only beneficial to learning if it’s accessed regularly and at the correct reading level.

It’s accessed via our school website under the ‘students’ tab. More details about how to access from home will be provided in the coming weeks.
