How you can help
Parents are the biggest influence on young people when it comes to deciding on their future, so it’s good to show an interest even if your son or daughter does not always seem to welcome it.
If your son or daughter has some ideas
Encourage your son or daughter to find out all they can about their career ideas and to think whether these careers would suit them: What is involved in the work? (Does it fit in with their interests, skills and personality?) What qualifications are needed? Do they need full-time study? Are the qualifications they are taking in school right for what they want to do? How do they apply? What are the deadlines for applying? What will the courses, jobs or training which they are considering lead to?
How you can help
If your son or daughter has no ideas
Help them think about their- Strengths and weaknesses- Personal qualities- Interests- What work experience has taught them
• Do some research together about different types of jobs and courses
• Ask them about the Post-16 Options Day they will take part in on 5th October
• Look at the local college and sixth form prospectuses
• Attend local college and sixth form open days together
• Suggest that your son or daughter speaks to their tutor or Mrs Cray
• Suggest that they call in to see the Connexions PA on a Tuesday lunchtime
• Speak to the Connexions PA at parents’ evenings
How you can help
…Matravers Sixth Form?• Encourage your child to talk to teachers about the subjects
• Attend the Sixth Form Open Evening – 17th November
…College/other sixth forms?• Take them to open days at college and sixth forms
• Help them fill out college and sixth form applications – parents/carers usually have to sign them
…an Apprenticeship?• Help them to register on the apprenticeship website – www.apprenticeships.org.uk
• Apprenticeships advertised from January onwards – encourage them to keep an eye on the local press as well as the apprenticeships website for vacancies
