C: We gather to worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, our God, our creator, our redeemer, who walks with us and promises to be with us every step of our lives. Amen

R: The preparations are in place, the excitement mounts, and for those who are journeying to families, arrangements are finalised, clothes sorted, gifts wrapped and labelled.

Two thousand years ago and more, a pregnant girl called Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth who was also expecting.

R: As soon as they greeted each other, the baby in Elizabeth's womb kicked out, and she interpreted this as a sign from God that Mary was greatly blessed, because she believed that all God had promised would be fulfilled in her life.

R: Father God, when we consider your servant Mary, what we see is a humility and obedience that is so often lacking in our own lives.

R: As we hear your Word again, and consider the one through whose body you entered this world, remind us of the meaning of humility and grant us a confidence of faith that knows your promises to us are always fulfilled.

In this Advent Season we are called to repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand. So let us confess our sins to God our Father, because Jesus Christ has come to forgive us our sins.

C: O God, as we begin a new church year, as we think of the year passing, we see the reality of the world, hunger, poverty, loneliness, disease, emptiness and despair. Our best efforts seem to change nothing. We are ready to give up. Forgive us.

C: In this time of Advent, we pray that you would enable us to see the signs of your breaking through the tinsel and glitter we use to hide behind. Help us to face reality with patience and hope instead of becoming indifferent to the world's evil.

M: Hear the Good News! God has forgiven you through the birth, life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Receive God's forgiveness by believing this Good News. Through Christ, God calls each one of us to take our parts in the story of God's love and care, the journey of discipleship.

that your Spirit would revive our spirits. In the light of the advent candles, we pray that your word would rekindle our visions. In this season of Advent, prepare us to receive you as the one who comes as the Babe of Bethlehem and who comes again as the King of kings. Amen.

The Readings

R: The first reading for the first Sunday in Advent is written in chapter 61 of Isaiah beginning at verse 1.

Isaiah 61:1-11 (CEV)

The Spirit of the LORD God has taken control of me! The LORD has chosen and sent me to tell the oppressed the good news, to heal the brokenhearted, and to announce freedom for prisoners and captives.


2This is the year when the LORD God will show kindness to us and punish our enemies.

The LORD has sent me to comfort those who mourn, 3 especially in Jerusalem.


He sent me to give themflowers in place of their sorrow, olive oil in place of tears, and joyous praise in place of broken hearts.


They will be called "Trees of Justice," planted by the LORD to honour his name. 4Then they will rebuild cities that have been in ruins for many generations.


5They will hire foreigners to take care of their sheep and their vineyards. 6But they themselves will be priests and servants of the LORD our God. The treasures of the nations will belong to them,

and they will be famous.


7They were terribly insulted and horribly mistreated; now they will be greatly blessed and joyful forever.

8I, the LORD, love justice! But I hate robbery and injustice.


My people, I solemnly promise to reward you with an eternal agreement.

9Your descendants will be known in every nation. All who see them will realize that they have been blessed, by me, the LORD.


10I celebrate and shout because of my LORD God. His saving power and justice are the very clothes I wear. They are more beautiful than the jewellery worn by a bride or a groom.


11The LORD will bring about justice and praise in every nation on earth, like flowers blooming in a garden.

2nd Reading

R: The 2nd Reading is written in chapter 4 of 1st Timothy beginning at verse 6.

6If you teach these things to other followers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus. You will show that you have grown up on the teachings about our faith and on the good instructions you have obeyed.

7Don't have anything to do with worthless, senseless stories. Work hard to be truly religious. 8-9As the saying goes,

"Exercise is good for your body, but religion helps you in every way. It promises life now and forever.”

These words are worthwhile and should not be forgotten. 10We have put our hope in the living God, who is the Saviour of everyone, but especially of those who have faith. That's why we work and struggle so hard11Teach these things and tell everyone to do what you say.

12Don't let anyone make fun of you, just because you are young. Set an example for other followers by what you say and do, as well as by your love, faith, and purity.
