Changes to Grading
• Graded 1 – 9 rather than A* - G
• 9 is the highest
• 5 will be considered a good pass
Plan for the Year
• Students have fully covered all components of both GCSEs.
• The remainder of the year will be spent revising topics and
honing exam techniques.
Additional Opportunities
• A carousel system of revision sessions is already running after
school (Monday – Wednesday)
• Students have been provided with a copy of the timetable for
these sessions.
• Revision guides – a revision guide has recently been published
and students will be given the opportunity to purchase one

• After the Christmas holidays, students will be completing a

Science GCSE’s at St. Wilfrid’s
• All students will study two separate GCSE’s in Science (Core and
Additional GCSE Science) apart from Triple Science candidates who will
study three GCSE’s (Biology, Chemistry and Physics).
• Each GCSE is a stand-alone GCSE assessed through three 1 hour
written examinations (25% each) and one ISA controlled assessment
(25%).
• All exams will take place in the Summer of 2017.

• Core GCSE: Students sit exams on B1, C1 and P1 and a Core ISA assessment.

What are ISA’s?
• Investigative Skills Assignments (ISA’s) –
• Pupils given a research topic
• Pupils research this practical/topic and create their own notes
• Pupils sit ISA paper 1 exam on this planning
• Pupils conduct the practical in question
• Pupils analyse results with a table and graph
• Pupils sit ISA paper 2 on the practical and associated questions
What are ISA’s?
• Investigative Skills Assignments (ISA’s) –
• Pupils are guided through the process by subject teachers. The
exams take place in classrooms but under strict exam
conditions. Pupils should follow the advice from their teachers
and prepare for exams using the revision resources that will be
provided.
When are the ISA’s?
• Core ISA – Has already been completed in lessons last half term.
• Additional ISA – Currently being completed in lessons finishing this
week.
• Separate/Triple Science ISA’s – 1 ISA completed, second currently
being completed in lessons finishing this week. Third ISA to be
completed in lessons in the near future (date tbc).
Possible ISA Re-sits
• The Science department will review the results of the ISA’s and
determine if a student needs improve his/her grade.
• There will be opportunities for these pupils to re-sit the ISA/ISA’s on
Monday 5th December and possibly a day off timetable later in the year
if necessary (still tbc).
• Discussions will take place with pupils and parents will be informed.
Mock Exams
• Core/Additional – Students will sit a full Core GCSE paper and
an Additional paper with all content covered up to that time.
• Triple – Students will sit a full Core GCSE paper and a full
Additional GCSE paper.
• The mock exams for Science begin on the 3rd January and take
place over the following two weeks.
Revision
• Students need to think and interact with material as they revise.

• We are a dedicated and committed team at St Wilfrid’s and we will do everything

revision/work and the results they achieve – there is no short cut to success.
• Mocks are coming up very soon and students must treat these as the real deal –
preparing well for mocks sets you up well for the summer exams and allows you to
identify strengths/weaknesses and improve general exam technique. Work hard for
mocks – you will do better in your mocks and summer exams!!!

In the first year, the
same proportion of students will as currently get A and above
achieve a grade 7 and above

The National Reference Test/OFQUAL legislation
• Different schools selected each year:
– 300 schools tested each year
– 30 students take the maths test and another 30 take the
English test
• We have been selected. Tests will take place either 22nd/23rd
February 2017
• Designed to inform GCSE awarding
• Could be used to inform awarding in 2018 and beyond
• Students and schools do not get results.
