A Message from Fr. Jake… I know that we have talked a lot about Fr. Scott Foley in our different publications for the last several months, but for those who watch or attend Mass this weekend, you will be able to see and hear him for the first time. Fr. Scott's assignment at OLV began on July 1st however, he took off the initial days of July to spend with his parents to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary at the end of June. Therefore, he has now fully moved into the rectory and is ready to begin his duties as the Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Victory. I will be talking more about his role and responsibilities here at OLV in the coming weeks. Welcome to OLV, Fr. Scott! In addition to Fr. Scott, I am happy to welcome Kaye Meyers to the parish staff. Kaye will be filling our K-8 Faith Formation Coordinator position. Kaye's primary role will be coordinating and administering the K-8 faith formation program and assisting JFK with religious education curriculum and sacramental preparation. She will also be taking over responsibility for the parish's Safe Environment program. Kaye and her husband, Tom, are also members of the parish. Welcome to OLV, Kaye! Jennifer Wemhoff will be remaining on the OLV staff as well, but she will be filling our newly created position that will focus solely on adult faith formation. In this new role of the Adult Faith Formation Coordinator, Jennifer will work to provide faith formation opportunities for those over the age of 18 in the parish. She will be getting a new email in the next few weeks, but Jennifer can still be reached at the faith formation office in the school at 563-391-8384. Jennifer and Kaye will be working together over the coming weeks to transition into their respective positions. Furthermore, they, along with the school staff, and myself will be monitoring the latest guidance being given out by our Bishop, the State of Iowa, and Scott County in regards to COVID-19 precautions. Please know that registration forms for faith formation programs along with more details about programs offerings will be coming soon. We know that many parishioners want this information as soon as possible, so we will be working hard in the coming days to process all of the latest information and make decisions about the future. As I mentioned already, there is definitely a lot of news coming out about COVID-19 during these initial days of July. OLV is monitoring the guidance that Bishop Zinkula is giving in regards to COVID-19 along with the guidance being given by the State of Iowa and Scott County. I am not going to speculate about what will happen in the coming days and weeks ahead, but please know that we will communicate with the entire parish about any changes that will have to be made as a result of our ever evolving situation around COVID-19. Given what is happening in other places in the United States, changes could happen very quickly. Please make sure that you stay tuned to our parish website and other sources of communications for updates. Most importantly, please continue to pray that we are able to find a vaccine and treatments that will help the world to manage this difficult and dangerous situation. I want to end this week by thanking everyone who has attend Mass over the last two weeks for your patience. We are continuing to learn about what works best with the current restrictions we have for the celebration of the Eucharist, so I expect that we will continue to be making minor changes in the weeks to come. I personally love having parishioners back at the celebration of the Eucharist, but please know that the parish will continue to provide on-line recording of the Mass, daily reflections, bulletins, and other resources for those who are not able to come back to church. We hope to provide help and support to everyone during these difficult days. Please be assured of my continued thoughts and prayers for all of you. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to contact the parish office. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us.

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Stewardship Moment Good stewards in a parish are like yeast in bread. Their selfless gifts of time and talent help the parish grow and thrive; and their example inspires others too!

From your Parish Nurses

Social Action/Christian Service Catholic Social Teachings ask us to treat all people with human dignity. The USCCB states in the definition that “We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things.” Fr. Richard Rohr states “The deepest questions are not those of rights and power, or whether or not we’re getting everything that society owes us. The deepest questions are those of how love can be expanded and increased. How can we “defer to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:21)? Wearing a mask during Covid-19 is not about our rights or the government telling us what to do. It’s about treating everyone with human dignity by doing our share to keep them safe.

Life can seem to be full of turmoil with COVID-19 and the social unrest causing changes in our daily way of life. Life is definitely different. We are not able to embrace each other, but instead we have to social distance and mask our faces causing distance. Let us remember that kindness for one another can help with a person’s health and wellbeing. “Do things for people not because of who they are or what they do in return, but because of who you are.” -Harold S. Kushner “Sometimes it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a person’s life.” -Jackie Chan “Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” -Scott Adams Kindness can be contagious, let’s pass it on! Be kind to others even though there may be differences in ethnic backgrounds or beliefs. We are all in this together. Source: FTD by Design, Wellness Matters

GOSPEL MEDITATION - July 12, 2020 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Using the best seeds doesn’t always guarantee the best plants. An older Italian gentleman straight from Italy gave me these amazing tomato seeds that he claimed produced the best tomatoes ever grown. Without doubt, the fruit he shared with me was a testament to that fact. These tomatoes were amazing! I couldn’t wait until the next growing season to plant these seeds and harvest my own tomatoes. The whole experiment ended up a failure. I did everything the gentleman said, but my fruit didn’t even come close. What happened? At first I was perplexed, then some years later the light dawned. The problem wasn’t the seeds, it was the soil! You cannot sow seeds in any old place and in a haphazard way and expect them to be at their best. It doesn’t work that way. Planting the seeds is the easiest part. Preparing the soil is the challenge. Tilling, mulching, enriching, and building up the nutrients are all required for good fruit. Then after the seeds are planted, more care is required in order to maintain that healthy, nutrient rich environment for those seeds to sprout, grow, and flourish. God happily sows the seeds of his Word. What do we do with them? If we expect to be a passive bystander and have good fruit magically grow, we are mistaken. Bearing the good fruit of God’s Word requires preparation and work. We have to cultivate the soil of our lives so that those seeds can find a proper home. This one thing alone takes a great deal of patience, time, and effort. What kind of preparation have we put into our lives so that we can be a recipient of God’s seed? It takes a great deal of soul-searching and ego-checking to properly prepare. God is the ever faithful and persistent sower. If the seeds do not bear fruit the first time, God will come back time and time again, giving it another try. If we have created a suitable bed for sowing, then once the seed is sown, we must properly maintain them. What is our maintenance plan for the seeds of God’s Word? We need not only a source for water but a watering schedule. We need to weed, aerate the soil, nurture the young plants, protect them, and provide proper nutrients. What does our spiritual maintenance plan look like? If we have done all things well, imagine what the seeds of God’s Word could produce in us!

Interested in Joining Our Parish? We extend a warm welcome to all who worship with us and invite you to consider joining our parish community. Stop by the information kiosk in the Gathering Space to pick up a packet of materials with further details. We’d genuinely like to connect your family to our family of faith and hope that you will allow us to be part of your spiritual journey.
