Dear Parishioners, Once again, I thank all of you for being so vigilant and cooperative regarding the wearing of masks while in church and following all of the pandemic protocols that have been established by the Archdiocese of Hartford. I’ve said it be-fore and I’ll say it again, I’m sure eve-ry time I mention masks during the weekly announcements, you think: “There he goes again.” I think it, too. Unfortunately, COVID-19 cases are climbing rapidly nationwide and pos-itivity rates and hospitalizations in Connecticut keep growing as well. We all know, and the leading scien-tists tell us, that proper mask wearing is one of our best defenses we have during the pandemic. Keep up the good work, pray for the good health of all: it helps everyone. With the above being said, I was informed last week that a person who attended a funeral here on Friday, November 6, tested positive for COVID-19. We have posted a notice on our so-cial media platforms and the funeral home was informed as well. Each week you hear me make an announcement regarding the wearing of face-masks and I make a more detailed announce-ment at the start of each funeral. Here is how we,

as a community, are keep-ing safe during this time: • As you know we are very diligent in the

cleansing of the church after any event that takes place; this is also true following daily Mass and funerals.

• For my part, I do not have any physical contact with any person: I refuse to do fist bumps or elbow taps. I’m sure that you have noted that when distributing Holy Communion, I drop the host into the hand of the communicant so as to avoid contact. • We do not have lectors or Extra-Ordinary Ministers of Holy Commun-ion so as to keep contact to a mini-mum as well.

• I believe that we are properly doing every-thing that has been recommended to us so that we may stay ahead of the virus. Should any other developments arise I will certainly keep you informed of them.

Despite all of the “heavy” news this week, I hope that this coming week is a pleasant one.

Extension of Dispensation from Sunday Mass Obligation

Now through Feb. 16, 2021

On March 13, 2020, each and every Cath-olic in the Archdiocese of Hartford was dis-pensed from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass by Archbishop Leonard P. Blair due to the potential danger of the coronavirus pandemic. In light of continued uncertainty regarding the extent and duration of the pandemic in the state of Connecticut and throughout the Archdiocese of Hartford, Archbishop Blair has now extended this dispensation from the Sunday obligation through Saturday, February 16, 2021. The Archdiocese of Hartford continues to monitor the severity of the situation and will provide updates regarding decisions reached for the archdiocese as they are made.

Our Monthly Parish Devotion: Praying for Deceased Loved Ones

May we pray for them now, and always. St. Gertrude the Great is invoked for souls in purgatory and for living sinners. Our Lord told St. Gertrude that the following prayer would release 1,000 souls from Purgatory each time it is said. The prayer was extended to include living sinners.

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today,

for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family.

Our first reading begins with a refreshing passage from Proverbs proclaiming the value of wives. We have heard, throughout history, of many fa-mous men attributing their suc-cess to the support their wives have given them. Women have always been in the forefront of influencing men in their deci-sionmaking. I can personally attest to the support my wife has given me in nearly 34 years of being a Deacon. It is an undeni-able fact, and I believe many of my brother Dea-cons will agree, that our ministries would never have begun without the support and sacrifices made by our wives and families. This is true of Catholic Deacons who are married clergy, and also the clergy of other faiths in which ministers are allowed to be married. History and scripture have shown us many exam-ples of the influence of women and their assis-tance to men who have lived out their lives at-tempting to help others either in their faith or in public office. Fortunately, in the second half of the 20th Century, women began to emerge in public life and clerical life of other faiths to offer their tal-ents in a more complete and equal role. The United States even has its first woman and first female minority in the Executive branch of our government as Vice-President-Elect. God has created all of us equal. Racial equality has taken far too long to enter into American culture, so too has it taken far too long for gender equality to gain equal footing. May all segments of life -- religious, public and corporate -- fully acknowledge the equality of all God’s chil-dren. It is only through the voices of all people that balance and harmony can be accomplished. Our Gospel today focuses on just that is-sue: Using all the talents available to us. Many years ago, I attended a play that centered around the experience of explorers. The explorers in the

play dreamt of successfully reach-ing their destination but also how they dealt with their fears, espe-cially the fear of surviving in harsh weather and terrain. In one scene, an explorer speaks of his fears as they all try to make a de-cision on how to proceed. The decision is whether to continue forward, facing possible starva-tion and death, with the hope of

the success versus retreating and returning to safe ground. One explorer states, “God created us for a purpose with specific talents and responsi-bilities. It can be a single moment in our life or a lifetime commitment, but we must define our-selves by doing as God is calling us to do. We must never hesitate to use the gifts that are uniquely ours, given to us by God.” Jesus’ parable today separates those who are obedient and are willing to take risks to make a better world. The parable condemns those who sit back expecting life to fulfill their expectations without ever attempting themselves to improve on the world as it currently exists.

“...This Word of God proclaimed in the liturgy pos-sesses a special sacramental power to bring about in us what it proclaims. ... How, then, do we respond to this wonderful gift of God's Word? We respond in word and song, in posture and gesture, in silent meditation and, most important of all, by listening attentively to that Word as it is pro-claimed.” -- General Instruction of the Roman Mis-sal, United States Catholic Conference of Bishops.

First Reading — The woman who fears the Lord is to be praised (Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31). Second Reading — Brothers and sisters, you are children of the light (1 Thessalonians 5:1-6). Gospel — Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsi-bilities (Matthew 25:14-30 [14-15, 19-21]).

Social Justice Committee is Looking for Help!

Drivers Needed The Social Justice Committee would like to acknowledge the work of so many during this pandemic, specifically those who have been feed-ing the hungry in so many ways under the awe-some direction of Deacon Dean. Now, here’s where you can help: DRIVERS ARE NEEDED FOR TWO ON-GOING EVENTS: 1. Taking food to seniors who cannot get out,

every other Saturday morning at 10:00. You would sign up for the Saturday that you can do it. The more drivers, the less often you work.

2. Picking up sal-vaged food from Cumberland Farms on Monday mornings, or possibly other mornings. Again, the more drivers we have, the less often you are scheduled.

Call Deacon Dean: (203) 521-0199
