Celebrate Memorial Day

Monday, May 30, 2016 Parish Office is Closed

Mass is at 9:00 a.m. No Evening Mass

OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 4 NORTHVILLE, MICHIGAN

Jesus gave us his body and blood as spiritual food. This is a special day that we celebrate this gift of his body and each Sunday we gather at the table for this nourishment to sustain us throughout the week. There have been many sacred choral works written to honor the Body and Blood of Jesus. The one that the Adult Choir is singing this Sunday is by Mozart, titled “Ave Verum Corpus.” When

translated, it means “Hail true body.“ It was written six months before Mozart’s death in 1791, and is a popular choral work that is

an essential piece of choir repertoire. Another famous composition about the Body of Christ is the “Panis Angelicus,” (translated means “Bread of angels”) by Cesar Franck. The text was written by St. Thomas Aquinas who lived from 1225 to 1274. Each composition reveres the body of Christ as the heavenly food that was given to all men as a preview of heaven itself.

This Sunday is the Adult Choir’s last time to sing for the year. They will begin a well deserved summer break. Thank you, choir members, for another year of fine singing and musical growth. Have a safe and restful summer!

Kathy Sanderson, Music Director

We have returned to Ordinary Time, however last weekend and this weekend have Solemnities that replace the Eighth and Ninth Sundays in Ordinary Time. Last Sunday was Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity and this Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi).

Today, our solemnity celebrates our Catholic belief that the bread and wine of the Eucharist are transformed into the real presence of Christ—Body, Blood, soul and divinity. The readings chosen for this solemnity can help enrich our understanding of the meaning of the Eucharist.

The first reading is from Genesis. We hear about Melchizedek who only appears twice in the Old Testament. The other time is in Psalm 110, which ironically, we also hear today. Melchizedek appears suddenly in Genesis to acknowledge Abraham's victory in battle. He prepares a meal for him and blesses him in the name of God. The passage was certainly selected for today’s solemnity because Melchizedek served a meal of bread and wine. But it is the titles of this unusual character that provide a helpful context for the Eucharist. The name Melchizedek literally means “king of righteousness or justice.” His position as “king of Salem” (14:18) means “king of peace.” So here is a person who prepares a meal and by his person associates that meal with justice and peace.

Our gospel is from Luke 9:11-17 and in it Jesus responds to the real human hunger of the people. He is not just feeding individuals but he feeds a huge crowd. The crowd represents the hunger of the world. Each time we share in the Eucharist, we can rejoice in the real presence of Christ whom we have just received. But we also need to see that we share in the promise of God’s kingdom of peace and justice for our world. We are all called to bring about this kingdom.

Each of us is called to live the Eucharist and the life of justice; and to live for peace and love. This life involves us living with those who suffer. We may be called to share our life with people who are sick or the elderly, or with people who are lonely. We may be called to share our life with those who struggle with an addiction. We may be called to share our life with those who are angry because of the hurt they suffered when they were young. We do not need to look far to find people who are hungry, suffering or lost. They are the people who say “we are in a deserted place…“ And in reply the Lord says to each of us, “give them some food yourselves.”

How will you live the Eucharist this week?

Farewell 8th Grade Students! With great enthusiasm, the eighth grade students have been busy

wrapping up the end of the school year! Over the past couple of weeks, these students have made it through final exams and an amazing trip to Washington D.C. This year, we proudly recognize having the most students who are graduating from OLV with the GOLD award (all A's in classes and a 90% or higher on the IOWA), as well as the SILVER award (All A's and B's in classes). Nearly every student in the eighth grade is receiving a CITIZENSHIP award. The CLASS of 2016 was outstanding in both academics and citizenship which made the year fantastic for all!

One highlight of the year, is the Eighth Grade Assembly, which took place on their last day of school. During this assembly, the entire school is present to watch the “wake-up” videos, to cheer on the eighth grade boys and girls—as each group performed a dance, and to gather as one in prayer with a last blessing for the students who were off to D.C. This is the highlight of OLV’s Spirit Week in which the students had a different themed "dress down" day.

Our students will be attending many different high schools in the fall. We wish them the best of luck and many blessings on their academic endeavors!

Memorial Day, is more than a

time to gather for family outings or to open up the cottage! It is a designated time for us as a nation to bring to mind those who have fought and or have given up their lives so that we may live in freedom. Established in 1868 as a day to honor the fallen soldiers of the Civil War, Memorial Day has become a

day to remember the price of our freedom and the sacrifices of those who have fought so that we can be free.

The Wars have been fought both here in the United States and abroad and have done more than preserve our civil liberties and way of life. They have preserved our right to worship our God and practice our faith.

As a family this weekend, participate in the Memorial Day activities that are planned throughout the area. Whether it is by watching the parade or some other observance you will actively take part in keeping alive the precepts of our beliefs as a people and honor those who not only have given of their lives in past wars but also those who serve today.

Visit or call family and friends who have served and thank them for preserving our rights. For those who are no longer with us, if it is feasible, visit their gravesite and place an American flag on it as a sign that we remember.

A Memorial Day prayer that could be used as a part of your observance this weekend:

Dear Heavenly Father,As we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice

for the freedoms we enjoy every day, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Please hold our servicemen and women in your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and your presence as they stand in the gap for our protection.

We also remember the families of our troops. We ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes, and we pray your peace, provision, and strength will fill their lives.

May the members of our armed forces be supplied with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters feel our love and support. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Have a safe holiday and plan on spending some time

with your Church family, as well. Thank God for all that you have and especially for the right that we hold dearest: to gather publicly so that we can worship our God and speak of our love for him.

Marriage and Family Life Engaged couples across the Archdiocese of Detroit have been preparing for summer nuptials through marriage preparation programs. Catholic marriage is a calling from God to a shared vocation of life and love. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the archdiocesan Office for Marriage and Family Ministry to assemble marriage preparation programs designed to help couples build a foundation for this sacred union. These programs provide valuable opportunities, away from the distractions of wedding preparations, for couples to prayerfully discuss their future life together. The office also offers support services and programs that enrich and nurture people in every stage of the family life cycle, beyond the newlywed stage For more information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.AOD.org.

PRISON MINISTRY by June ClarkMy Spiritual Visitor (a story by an inmate)

The first words that come to mind are WOW, I am so blessed.  In 1998, when my best friend would tell me

about her spiritual visit I could feel the joy coming from her and I wanted some of that, too. For me, that meant facing fear and opening up to a stranger and accepting God again. At first, my fears kept me from seeing my faith. As time passed, I was provided kindness, compassion and love which taught me that "where I live" is not as important as knowing that I am loved just as I am. To try and imagine the last

seventeen years without her in her life would have made for a much darker place. Ghandi said, ”Be the change you want to see in the world.” My volunteer is a shining example of God's love and compassion. I am truly blessed to have her as my spiritual advisor.

For more information about Prison Ministry, please call June Clark at (734-354-9427 or Deacon Jim Ward (734) 276-7113.

KNIGHTLY NEWS

Fifth Sunday Rosary Program Sunday, May 29, after the 9:30 a.m. Mass

The month of May is dedicated to Our Lady, and the final Fifth Sunday Rosary recitation lead by the Knights of Columbus will take place on Sunday, May 29. Our Lady Herself said to St. Gertrude, “Never has any man composed anything more beautiful than the Hail Mary. No salutation could be dearer to my heart than those beautiful and dignified words that God the Father addressed to me Himself.” Beautiful indeed.

Please join the Knights of Columbus on Sunday, May 29, to recite the rosary in the church immediately following the 9:30 a.m. Mass.  ALL are welcome!
