Dear People of St. Anthony, St. Mary and Holy Family Parish:
“Jesus said to Peter: Do you love me? Peter answered him: Yes, Lord, you know that
I love you. Jesus said to him: Then feed my sheep.”
(John 21:15)
As you celebrate Eucharist today, I will be celebrating Eucharist along the shore of
the Sea of Galilee. Perhaps there will be sheep in view as we listen to the same
Gospel. Jesus of course wasn’t referring to four legged sheep when he was talking to
Peter. He was referring to two legged people. As I left for this trip “feeding the
sheep” was very much on my mind and heart.
On March 31st Catholic Charities convened a meeting at the Clark County Courthouse to explore the need for
and the support for a Transitional Living Center for homeless people in Clark County. They had invited
about a dozen agencies to come and share what they perceived as the need and what they could offer in
support. At the meeting there were five people representing agencies, three staff members from Catholic
Charities, Judy Morrow, myself and four St. Anthony parish members.
At least one of the St. Anthony parish members clearly came with the intent of stopping this from happening
in Loyal. The primary concern expressed was the safety of the school children. Much was also said about
how our communities, parishes and schools are decaying and how dangerous drug users have taken up
residence in our neighborhoods. The assumption in the person’s statements was that the Transitional Living
Center was going to attract more dangerous people into our community and have them live right next to our
Catholic School.
I was very impressed with the way the staff from Catholic Charities handled the situation. After the meeting
when I thanked them they said it is pretty much the same in every community they have worked in. People
fear the worst. And it takes a long slow process to address people’s legitimate concerns and work through
them.
In response to the concerns expressed on March 31st, they said three things. First of all, it is premature to be
against this proposal, because the proposal hasn’t even been fully formulated yet. The purpose of the meet-
ing was to meet with professionals in the area to determine if there is a need and if so, what specific popula-
tion we would try to address. Once the target population is identified then a proposal for a program to ad-
dress their needs can be developed. That proposal would then be shared at open community meetings for
people to respond to. At the end of the meeting all felt we should seek to help homeless single mothers with
children first.
The second thing the Catholic Charities Staff said in response to the fears expressed, and which was
confirmed by the Clark County agencies staffs present, was that initially the people accepted into the
Transitional Living Center Program would be people already in Loyal. All felt there are homeless families
already in our community who would greatly benefit from this program. Once they were helped we could
begin to help people from neighboring communities in the county. So we would not be “bringing in
dangerous people” to our community from outside.
But what really impressed me was the third thing the Catholic Charities staff brought out. They said we are
all concerned about our decaying rural communities. But what are we doing to change that? The Transition-
al Living Center would be a powerful way to help families who have come apart to get their lives back to-
gether again. It would be a way of rebuilding our community. The county agency representatives said they
often deal with families that can’t benefit from their programs because they have no stable place to live.
Stable housing gives them the ability to face and address their other issues. It is the first step on the ladder
back to being productive community members.
And I believe it would be a way of rebuilding the spirit of our parishes. Instead of living locked up in fear
we would be taking positive action to address the situation. Peter’s experience of the Risen Lord was being
sent to “feed his lambs.” Could ours be the same?
Fr. Steve

Catholic Charities Love Thy Neighbor Appeal As St. Alberto Hurtado used to say, "We are all invited to give until it hurts". It is not easy, but we can guarantee you that you will receive a thousand to one in return! In years' past we have asked you to help local families with utility assistance; assistance to help keep their lights and heat on, but experience has taught us that while the needs of the people we serve include utilities, there is still so much more! Our mission is to help the person where they are at and not with what we think they need. In other words, we help the person, not only their needs. By making a contri-bution to Catholic Charities, your generosity will allow us to do the works of mercy that Christ calls us to do. You can donate online at www.cclse.org. Thank you and God Bless!
