In today’s gospel Jesus asks his apostles, “But

who do you say, I am?” Then he gives the first

prediction of his passion and death, the ultimate

example of self-giving love. This question from

Christ is a challenge to our personal commit-

ment and faith to Christ and his church which

calls us to practicalities in our day-to-day living

as St James tells us. Let it be our prayer that we

may always “say” that Christ is the Lord and

messiah who redeems us through his freely ac-

cepted suffering on our behalf, and may we al-

ways find strength in his words. “Whoever

wishes to come after me must deny himself,

take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever

wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever

loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel

will save it” (Mark 8:34-35).

Connecting with everyday life: Ask yourself and your people what it means to: Deny self. Put aside all that is selfish, self-centered, and self-referential in order to live in Christ’s mission. Take up your cross. All the suffering, trials, and challenges of life, especially those we bear as a result of living our faith. Follow the Lord. Commit oneself as a disciple.

Hurricane Prayer

O Heavenly Father, all the elements of nature obey your command. Calm the storms that threaten us and turn our fear into praise of your goodness. Protect us from hurricanes and disasters of nature. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you through the power of the Holy Spirit, One

God forever and ever. AMEN
