Grade 8 to Grade 9Easing the Transition . . . The Guidance Department at Huron Heights
Each student will be assigned a Guidance Counsellor to assist in:
Course selection Academic assistance Long-term educational planning
and Career exploration Other personal concerns
OSSD RequirementsOntario Secondary School Diploma
30 Credits
40 Hours of Community Involvement
(may be completed during summer 2015)
Completion of the Literacy Requirement (Grade 10)
Course Selections: Things to Consider for Success
Diploma Requirements 30 credits in a variety of areas 18 compulsory & 12 elective
Course Types Academic, Applied or Open
Open Level Courses
Appropriate for ALL students
Prepare students for further study in certain subjects
Enrich the educational experience overall
Academic Courses Emphasize theory and abstract
problems
Lead to College, University, or University/College courses in grades 11 and 12
Recommended MINIMUM average of 70%
Applied Courses
Focus on practical learning and concrete examples
Prepare students for entrance to some college and/or apprenticeship programs as well as direct entrance to the workplace
Special Education Students who have been identified
through Special Education will continue to receive support through the Resource Centre at Huron Heights
