VOLUME 36 - ISSUE 1

WELCOMESteven Wilksch - Principal Faith College

Welcome to the 2020 College year. I wish to extend a particularly warm welcome to our new families and staff. Last week at our Opening service I spoke on behalf of all staff expressing how thankful we are that everyone in our community has returned safely to the new College year, particularly given the devastation of fires and floods that have impacted many people across our nation. Closer to home, we have been thinking and praying for those College families who live in fire affected regions such as Mt Torrens, Woodside, Charleston and Cuddle Creek just to name a few. We also celebrated the achievements of all of our 2019 DUX recipients in particular Year 12 DUX student Nicole Poulton. During our opening worship, I shared a story about a remarkable woman called Veronica, who grew up in Liberia, Africa, as one of 8 children who was cared for by her single mum. Through experiencing poverty, violence and war, many people may have thought the odds were against her. However, Veronica’s resilience and determination has led her to the present day where she lives in Canberra. Veronica was recently awarded a Doctorate after completing her PHD on ‘Violence against indigenous women and the role of the law’. So as we focus our minds and hearts on the year ahead, when things get tough, I encourage you to look at the other side of the coin recognising we are amongst the most privileged people in the world. Year 12 Dux Nicole Poulton with Principal Steven Wilksch

I wonder what our Faith community could potentially achieve if each of us deliberately and intentionally practised the habit of looking for things to be thankful for. So my challenge to myself and our community this year is to encourage each other to consciously think about expressing gratitude.

May this year bring many blessings to you and your families through your involvement with Faith.

On the 30 November, nine students and two staff flew to Germany for two weeks on the biennial Germany Trip. We were met at Hamburg airport by host families from our sister school, Charlotte Paulsen Gymnasium. During the following week, new friendships were formed as we experienced the daily life of German students and families. We also visited a number of cultural and historical sites. A highlight for many was the day trip to Lübeck. From Hamburg, we moved on to Berlin where we stayed together in a hostel, which was a very different experience to being in our host families. We visited many historical places and averaged 13km of walking each day! The students grew in confidence using public transport, navigating and keeping track of their spending, but the relationships and experiences we shared as a group are our definite shared highlights.‘My highlight was my host family, my host sister and I got along so well and my host parents were the sweetest people. We cried a lot on the last morning when we said goodbye.’ Ella Varpenius‘The churches were all so beautiful and it was interesting to read about the history, particularly at the St Nikolai Church, learning about Hamburg during World War II and the air raids. We don’t normally think about history from other people’s experience.’ Nicole Tilley‘My highlight in Hamburg was climbing the Michel (church). Getting used to the cold climate was interesting and using the trains was fun. In Berlin, my highlight was visiting the East Side Gallery.’ Oliver Fogarty‘My personal highlight has been learning about the Berlin Wall and life in East Berlin. I knew a bit about the Wall before but not about life there. Also meeting and talking with other people on the trip who I didn’t know before at school.’ Sydney Pick‘I enjoyed every second of it! I loved seeing all of the historical elements through the churches, town halls, museums and the different markets. I have some amazing memories.’ Annabelle Pinchbeck
