Welcome December! November flew by in a blur, but now the nights are getting darker and it is getting colder outside. It must be December! At this time of year we turn our thoughts to celebrating our traditions with family and friends. We are now beginning to think about those who may not be as fortunate as us during this upcoming holiday season. Our annual Toy Drive will take place this month. Please consider giving so we can help those less fortunate than us this Winter. Please note that we will be holding our annual food drive closer to April during Education Week. We also have many fun events coming up like our school Sing-a-longs. Please refer to your classroom calendars for individual class events and/or the school calendar which is on our website. As we approach the holidays, the staff at Meadowvale Village would like to extend their best wishes to all of our families during this happy season. Whichever holiday you celebrate I hope you enjoy the time that you spend with your family and friends. Thank you for working with us to provide a supportive and positive learning environment for all of our students here at Meadowvale Village. Student Leadership at Meadowvale Village P.S.

Did you know that students in all grades have a variety of student

leadership opportunities at Meadowvale Village? Here are just a few…

Student Ambassadors – Two students in each class from grades 1-5 have been chosen

to represent their class in a wide variety of ways. Some

examples include…welcoming new students, greeting members of the community during special events, and helping

to support Year 2

Kindergarten students as they transition to recess. Ask your child who their student ambassadors are.

Playground Activity Leaders in Schools (PALS) – Students in grades 4 and 5 provide friendship and fun through

structured recess activities to students in grades 1, 2, and 3. During lunch recess daily, primary students can join our

PALS on the playground, and participate in a variety of games and activities. This school year, we have over fifty

PALS! Ask your child if they are a student leader, or attend PALS during lunch recess. Remember, there’s always

room for one more!

MVPS News Team – Students in grade 5 practiced, auditioned and were selected to be a part of this student leadership

group. Every morning, two team members arrive at school early to prepare for the announcements, and then read sev-

eral important messages to the entire school community while focusing on reading with fluency, clarity and expres-

sion. This student leadership initiative allows students to improve their language skills, take ownership over their

learning environment, and find greater voice within their school. Ask your child if they are part of the MVPS News

Team.

FYI to Meadowvale Village Families Coming up in the near future Meadowvale Village Public School will be having Solar Panels installed on our rooftop. There will be no safety risks to our students, all activity will be on the rooftop. There may be minor inconveniences, which we will keep you informed of through letters home and synrevoice messages.

Library News

Understanding what you read is the most important part of reading. Teachers refer to this as comprehension. Good readers are aware of when they understand and when they do not understand what they have read. If they have trouble understanding specific words, phrases, or longer passages, they use a wide range of problem-solving strategies. Here are some “fix-up” strategies that good readers use:

rereading reading ahead skipping ahead asking questions drawing inferences making predictions figuring out unknown words

stopping to think connecting the reading to background knowledge

trying to get a mental picture of what is happening looking at the pictures

When reading with your child at home, you can help them develop comprehension skills by having conversations about what they have read. You can also encourage them to use some of the “fix-up” strategies listed above.

November 21st to November 25th was “Bully Awareness and Prevention

Week”. Throughout that week, we asked our students to make a pledge to

Choose Action and make the world a better place.

Harry will be honest and be kind to

his friends. Aiden said “I will stop

people who are being

bullies.”

Abigail said “I will let other

students play spies with

me if they want to play.”

Katie said she will

choose to be caring in

her school.

Harvin said “I will choose action by standing up

for a friend when they are getting bullied.”

Nylah said she will stand up to

bullies.

Adnan is going to be caring when

someone is sad and he will help

anyone.

Carly said “I will care for

others and be honest, I

will never lie in the

world.”

Miley said “If I’m outside at recess

and I see a kid that is alone I will play

with them.”

Morgan mentioned that she will

make a difference “by being caring

for people who need a friend.”

Liam said “I will be responsible in the

classroom”. Rida was excited to say “I will choose action to make a difference by caring.

I will help others when they get hurt.”

Parking and Pets

Parents if you are dropping your children off, or picking them up after school please do not park in the fire routes or

our bus loading zones. Also, please be aware that pets should not be exercised on Peel Board Property.

Around the Gym

Congratulations to the Gr. 4/5 Co-ed European Handball team on winning their second consecutive championship on November 21st. The team went undefeated in the round robin tournament held at David Leeder. The team demonstrated dominant defense and amazing offence while playing against Vista Heights 14-4, Levi Creek 14-3, Willow Way 17-0, and Briarwood, 17-6. In the finals, Meadowvale had to play a much improved Vista Heights team and captured a tight 6-3 victory. Great effort, determination and team spirit was shown. Mr. Arthur is proud of the team’s hard work and accomplishments. Way to go: Jordan, Jasraj, Jaikar, Khaleel, Jerron, Isha, Saihaj, Harshita, Naina, Yashica, Matthew, Adam, Theo, Rishab, Joshua, and Karan Skating will be offered once again for the gr. 4's as they will be going on 3 excursions per class. This

free skating (including rentals) program offered by FUNdamentals and the City of Mississauga is a wonderful introduction to the sport of skating. A big thank you to the parent council who is subsidizing the cost of the bus. The gr. 5 students will once again be going on 2 skiing trips (January 31st and February 14) to Horseshoe Resort outside of Barrie. Stay tuned for a ski package to be coming home with the gr. 5 students in the next few weeks.

News from the Music Department

December Concert – Thursday, December 15 @ 6:30 p.m.

Mark your calendars now for our evening of music. To open our show, both MVPS Choirs will be performing. Then, be prepared for ALL of the students in Grades Four and Five to entertain you with My Planet, Your Planet. The students were motivated by the Canadian Opera Company’s performance of “Second Nature” to present a musical about caring for our environment. There is nothing more exciting than watching your child perform LIVE, and we hope to see all of you here for this energetic and fun show. Students are asked to arrive at 6:10 p.m. We would love to fill the gym with a big audience, so please plan to attend. Your children are looking forward to performing for you!

Meadowvale Village Public School Choirs The MVPS Choirs have been working hard at each rehearsal to prepare for the

upcoming concert the evening of Thursday, December 15th. The students did an outstanding job performing at our Remembrance Day Service, and they will be

reprising those songs as well as lots of new songs for you. ALL choir members are expected to return to school for this performance; please arrive promptly at 6:10 p.m. for our 6:30 performance as the MVPS Choirs open the

show! You will be amazed by the musicality of these students when you hear them. Thank you for supporting their commitment to choir and reminding them to attend all practices.
