Hello everyone Special activities and events continue to dominate our weeks with the calendars and diaries overflowing. Last week we recounted our happenings in chronological order lest we miss something out. We’ll do the same this week as there’s rarely a dull moment at BPPS! We’d previously mentioned that the Girls’ Soccer Team had started well at the State Championships last Thursday. Whilst they con- tinued their good form, they encountered some tough opponents on the day, ending up with one win and two losses for the day. They defeated Grey Street 8 – 0, but were then defeated by Overnewton 0 – 1 and Langwarrin 0 – 2. As with the boys, we are extremely proud of these girls who not only played so well but represented the school so admirably. Their sportsmanship and demeanour was, at all times, excellent. Congratulations for doing so well girls and congratulations and thanks to Mr Mulder for his commitment to coach- ing the girls to perform at such an impressive standard. A dedicated group of parents conducted a highly-successful Fathers’ Day Stall on Friday. Sia Papadopoulos and Jane Fellingham had done a great job assembling a range of terrific gifts, providing the children plenty from which to choose. Thank you and thanks also to your team of helpers who assisted with sales on the day. The Grade 4s returned from Camp Oasis on Friday afternoon after enjoying three terrific days in Mt Evelyn (or Mt Everest as one of our younger school members referred to it!). This group also represented the school exceptionally well in the way they behaved and participated in all activities with enthusiasm. Our sincere thanks are extended to teachers Miss McHugh, Miss Brennan, Mrs Pritsis, Miss Amiconi, Miss Poor, Mrs Trollope, Mrs Mulder and Mr Hone, teacher aide Mrs Watson and parents Ms Tolcos, Mr Fellingham and Mr Louey for generously committing the time and energy to make this wonderful experience possible for the children. On Tuesday our Grade 5s headed off to Camp Coonawarra in East Gippsland and yesterday the Grade 3s set off for Phillip Island. Early re- ports from both venues indicated everything was going well. Around 70 of our athletes represented the school at the District Championships on Monday. There were many fine individual and team (relay) performances and many personal bests attained on the day. In fact, the BPPS competitors performed so well that we won the District Shield for the second year in a row! This is a wonderful achievement in a field of 14 schools, even allowing for the fact that two schools, Camberwell Girls and Fintona, only have girls and several of the schools are much smaller than us. Congratulations to all our participants on your terrific efforts and to Mr Batt who spent many hours training the children and organising the squad. 30 of our athletes now progress to the Division Championships early next term. On Monday the school welcomed our grandparents to be part of our annual Grandparents Concert. Performances came from our vari- ous music groups as well as individuals: Junior Choir, Emily Leonidis, the Orchestra, Dan Stavretis, the Boys’ Vocal Group, the Violin Ensemble, the Girls’ Vocal Group, Mason Rizzo, the Recorder Ensemble, Tiffany Huang, Isaac Flynn and the Senior Choir. Thanks to all the students who performed and thanks to Miss Poor and Miss Stephen for their preparation for what was an extremely successful event. We also thank our very special grandparents for making time to see and hear our very talented students. Also on Monday, to celebrate Literacy Week, students were asked to bring a favourite poem which they kept in their pockets and shared at various times throughout the day. We all joined during our Care, Learn and Share session culminating with a mass sharing of poems on the central synthi-turf area. Thanks to Miss Lindau for her coordination. Tuesday saw an excellent turn out to our school’s Parents and Friends Association meeting. The change of time to 9.10 a.m. proved to be popular with so many people in attendance. It was a great opportunity for some constructive conversations and information shar- ing. Thank you to all who attended. Hello everyone

Special activities and events continue to dominate our weeks with the calendars and diaries overflowing. Last week we recounted our

happenings in chronological order lest we miss something out. We’ll do the same this week as there’s rarely a dull moment at BPPS!

We’d previously mentioned that the Girls’ Soccer Team had started well at the State Championships last Thursday. Whilst they con-

tinued their good form, they encountered some tough opponents on the day, ending up with one win and two losses for the day. They

defeated Grey Street 8 – 0, but were then defeated by Overnewton 0 – 1 and Langwarrin 0 – 2. As with the boys, we are extremely

proud of these girls who not only played so well but represented the school so admirably. Their sportsmanship and demeanour was, at

all times, excellent. Congratulations for doing so well girls and congratulations and thanks to Mr Mulder for his commitment to coach-

ing the girls to perform at such an impressive standard.

A dedicated group of parents conducted a highly-successful Fathers’ Day Stall on Friday. Sia Papadopoulos and Jane Fellingham had

done a great job assembling a range of terrific gifts, providing the children plenty from which to choose. Thank you and thanks also to

your team of helpers who assisted with sales on the day.

The Grade 4s returned from Camp Oasis on Friday afternoon after enjoying three terrific days in Mt Evelyn (or Mt Everest as one of

our younger school members referred to it!). This group also represented the school exceptionally well in the way they behaved and

participated in all activities with enthusiasm. Our sincere thanks are extended to teachers Miss McHugh, Miss Brennan, Mrs Pritsis,

Miss Amiconi, Miss Poor, Mrs Trollope, Mrs Mulder and Mr Hone, teacher aide Mrs Watson and parents Ms Tolcos, Mr Fellingham

and Mr Louey for generously committing the time and energy to make this wonderful experience possible for the children. On Tuesday

our Grade 5s headed off to Camp Coonawarra in East Gippsland and yesterday the Grade 3s set off for Phillip Island. Early re-

ports from both venues indicated everything was going well.

Around 70 of our athletes represented the school at the District Championships on Monday. There were many fine individual and

team (relay) performances and many personal bests attained on the day. In fact, the BPPS competitors performed so well that we won

the District Shield for the second year in a row! This is a wonderful achievement in a field of 14 schools, even allowing for the fact

that two schools, Camberwell Girls and Fintona, only have girls and several of the schools are much smaller than us. Congratulations to

all our participants on your terrific efforts and to Mr Batt who spent many hours training the children and organising the squad. 30 of

our athletes now progress to the Division Championships early next term.

On Monday the school welcomed our grandparents to be part of our annual Grandparents Concert. Performances came from our vari-

ous music groups as well as individuals: Junior Choir, Emily Leonidis, the Orchestra, Dan Stavretis, the Boys’ Vocal Group, the Violin

Ensemble, the Girls’ Vocal Group, Mason Rizzo, the Recorder Ensemble, Tiffany Huang, Isaac Flynn and the Senior Choir. Thanks to

all the students who performed and thanks to Miss Poor and Miss Stephen for their preparation for what was an extremely successful

event. We also thank our very special grandparents for making time to see and hear our very talented students.

shared at various times throughout the day. We all joined during our Care, Learn and Share session culminating with a mass sharing of

poems on the central synthi-turf area. Thanks to Miss Lindau for her coordination.

Tuesday saw an excellent turn out to our school’s Parents and Friends Association meeting. The change of time to 9.10 a.m. proved

to be popular with so many people in attendance. It was a great opportunity for some constructive conversations and information shar-

ing. Thank you to all who attended.

FROM THE ASSISTING PRINCIPAL

PFAD

Today saw our ‘Principal for a Day’, Cr Jim Parke, Mayor of the City of Boroondara, spend time at BPPS.

Along with a tour of the school with Tom H and Stephanie S and visiting classrooms, Jim spent considera-

ble time with our school leaders and Junior School Councilors. The students had prepared questions for Jim.

These were based around Jim’s professional career and his role on Council. The two groups were especially

interested in what it means to be a leader and what skills are required. We look forward to Jim returning the

favour when the school leaders will visit the City of Boroondara Council offices on the 10 October. Part of

the visit will involve a 90 minute Civics and Citizenships focus. We look forward to reporting on this at a

later date.

ACTIVE SCHOOL’S FORUM

Last night our school took part in the Eastern Region Active Travel Forum. Our role was to

speak to the many initiatives we have in place to support active travel between home and

school. Together with Sucheta, Caelin and Josh DLT we presented to 21 schools that were in

attendance. Our students had put together a presentation which covered various aspects, some

of which included our school’s involvement in the Boroondara Active and Safe School’s Pro-

gram, decals identifying walking routes to school, the Walk to School Day program, Walk

Wheel Wednesdays, our very successful Smoothie bike days and our new bike shed develop-

ment. As well as presenting we came away with lots of great ideas for our school. The first one

we’d like you to think about is using our decal walking markers as a place to meet in the morn-

ing and then walk as a group. Some of you may already be doing this. If you have been or plan to we’d like to hear about your experienc-

es as well as sending pictures of what you’ve seen along your walk. If you’d be able to send these to [email protected]

Much of the research presented last night was about the pro-social outcomes of walking with people as well as the positive physical bene-

fits.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

I’ve spoken before of our school’s commitment and importance of the link between home and school. On our school’s website there are

two links which we welcome feedback on. What would you like to know more about that isn’t already available? If you could visit our

iPad Program at BPPS page and the Home-School Partnerships page and email the school with the subject ‘Website Feedback’ we would

appreciate it. The first document on our list is to provide information on the iPad app ‘Showbie’.

RUBBISH FREE LUNCHES

On behalf of the Keen Green Team I’d like to thank our school community for your support of our rubbish free lunch initiative. If you’ve

been to the school recently you will have noticed the reduction in waste. At present we’re looking at ways to support the eating of food

during the recess break. The concept of ‘brain food’ being available during the day is being explored. We’re also investigating classroom

compost bins. With our chickens we also have an avenue for food scraps.

WEBSITE TRAFFIC

I thought you might be interested in seeing the various countries who have visited our website in the last month. I’m surprised to see al-

most half our traffic coming from the US. Perhaps it was Mr. Reg on his recent trip there. Enjoy the second last week of the term.

MORE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL!

CAMP NEWS

The news from camp is very positive. The weather is perfect, the camp activities great and the students and staff are

having a great time. All going well both the Grade 3 and 5 camp groups will be at BPPS by 3.00 p.m. Please be

mindful that there will be many buses arriving at one time. If you are driving it might be wise to park a block or two

away.

ART WEEK

The last week of term 3 is Art Week at Boroondara Park Primary School. This year we are showcasing the work of

grades 3 – 6, whereby every child from those grades has one of the art works they have completed this year on dis-

play to the school community. Alongside their work is a brief reflection about their work, or about art in general.

Also on display are some art works created by adult artists in our school community, and they too, have reflected on

their arts practice.

During the week we invite everyone to come and wander the corridors of the main building and visit the displays,

whether you have a child in those grades or not. You will be amazed at the skills and thinking of our students.

A special inclusion in this year’s display is the “Foundation Fantasy”, a collaborative work created by the Founda-

tion students. This abstract work will be auctioned to the highest bidder at the school fair in November.

We look forward to hearing your “oohs” and “ahs” next week! Mrs Trollope and Mrs Hortin

The ‘Artist of the Week for next week will be Oliver Woodman from grade 3SG. Oliver captured the slightly abstract style of the Italian artist Amadeo Modigliani in his self-portrait. The elongated face and neck produced an ex-tremely interesting and creative artwork. Well done Oliver.

District Athletics Day

On Monday, we had 70 students represent the school at the Balwyn North District Athletics Carnival at

Doncaster Athletics Tracks. It was a superb day with all of our students performing at an exceptional level

in their events and proudly representing our school. There are 14 schools in our District competing for the

shield, with students who place in the top 4 for their event gaining points for their school.

As the day progressed, it was clear that we were edging our way towards the top of the ladder. We all

waited in anticipation as the final results came in and as they were read out we finished in ….. first

place!!! Back to back champions!! A fantastic effort.

Congratulations to the 30 students who have now qualified for the Division Athletics Carnival at the Bill

Sewert Athletics track in East Burwood on Wednesday 5th October. We wish all of our athletes the best of

luck!

State Soccer Finals

Congratulations to our Boys and Girls’ Soccer Teams who competed extremely well at the State Soccer

Finals last week. Both teams won at least one match and had to play against some difficult competition. A

big thank-you to Mr Mulder and Mr King for training and coaching the students as well as the parents for

transporting the students on the day.
