Weekly Update

March 25, 2020

IT WOULD BE EASIER TO PRAY IF I WERE CLEARO Eternal One, it would be easier for me to pray

if I were clear and of a single mind and a pure heart;if I could be done hiding from myself

and from you, even in my prayers. But, I am who I am,

mixture of motives and excuses, blur of memories, quiver of hopes, knot of fear, tangle of confusion, and restless with love, for love.I wander somewhere between

gratitude and grievance, wonder and routine, high resolve and undone dreams,

generous impulses and unpaid bills.

Come, find me, Lord.Be with me exactly as I am.

Help me find me, Lord.Help me accept what I am,so I can begin to be yours.

Make of me something small enough to snuggle, young enough to question, simple enough to giggle,

old enough to forget, foolish enough to act for peace;skeptical enough to doubt the sufficiency of anything but you,

and attentive enough to listenas you call me out of the tomb of timidityinto the chancy glory of my possibilities

and the power of your presence.

-Ted Loder, Guerrillas of Grace

The Face Masks Project

If you love to sew and you wantto make a difference, you aregoing to love this project. I would

invite you to look through yourfabric stash and find fun cottonprints. If you have even a smallamount of cotton print fabric, you can make face masks. Istarted working on a coupledifferent versions over theweekend and came up with twostyles that seem to work well andfit comfortably. I invite youto search the internet as I did andfind even more ideas. I found apost that suggested that the facemask should include a layer of an

unwoven material such as fusible interfacing or a layer of 100%cotton T-shirt material. I tried the patterns that use elastic tosecure the mask on the face but found that it is difficult to get thesize right. So, I’m using fabric ties. The fabric ties are easy tomake and require just four 1 ½” X 18” strips of matching fabric foreach mask. I am including a few photos to give you an idea abouthow the finished masks should look. The pattern that I prefer isthe one I found on www.craftpassion.com. There is a tutorial forthis pattern on Youtube.

Of course, these masks are not as good as the n95 masks that arerecommended for health care workers and first responders.Homemade masks are not intended to replace the n95 masks. Weshould do all we can to support efforts to make sure our healthcare workers and first responders have the BEST protectiveequipment. In fact, UW Hospital in Madison has posted amessage that they don’t want donations of homemade masksbecause they are expecting to receive masks from a company thatis able to make the n95 masks and other protective gear (gowns, gloves, etc.). In any case, it is predicted that there may be ashortage at some point. My niece, a nurse in an intensive care unitin a hospital in Texas, has been issued one mask per day and toldshe must reuse it throughout her shift.

If you are interested in making face masks and want to talk abouthow to make them and share ideas about how we can distributethem to friends and family and others in the community, callme. I’m home all of the time except when I’m out taking awalk. Stay well and safe at home everyone! My number is(608)239-6060. My email is: [email protected]. Your friend in Christ,Iris Christenson
