Hence, one of my favorite parts of Advent was the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It is in this context that I would like to speak about “hope.” Hope is a word with a lot of weight. It is like having a secure line that reaches all the way to heaven. No matter what troublesome waters may come your way and rock the boat, as long as your line is secure and anchored in heaven, there is always hope. For the moment we are still waiting for Jesus to come and pull us in, and in order for us not to grow lax or anxious, God has given us Mary. In this sense Advent is intertwined between Jesus and Mary. According to St. Alphonsus Liguori, people outside the Church cannot endure when we Catholics call Mary our “hope.” They say that God alone is our hope, and that according to the prophet Jeremiah: “Cursed is the person who trusts in a creature.” Mary, they argue, is a creature, and how can a creature be our hope? Well, that all depends on what kind of hope you are looking for. St. Thomas says that we can place our hope in a person in two ways – as a principle cause and as a mediate cause. For example: those who put their trust in, let’s say a king, put their trust in him as their sovereign; but a king also has ministers and intercessors. When a favor is granted, even if it comes via the mediator or intercessor, the petition comes really from the king. Hence the petitioners have a right to call the mediator their “hope.” The King of Heaven, being infinite Goodness, has given us His own Mother as our Mother and intercessor, and has granted her all power to help us. So it is that He wishes us to place our hope for salvation and every blessing in her. Those who put their hope in creatures alone, apart from God, don’t get very far. But those who put their trust in Mary, who being the Mother of God and is never alone, are able to secure grace and eternal life. Therefore, it is perfectly reasonable to call the Blessed Virgin Mary our hope. St Ephrem, reflecting on the mystery of hope, says that God wills that all who are saved should be saved by the instrumentality of Mary, and addresses her in these words: “Hail then, O hope of my soul, O Lady, never cease watching over us. Keep and guard us under your wings of mercy, for after God, we have no hope but in you.” In this season of Advent we await in hope for the return of our King and Savior. Nevertheless, until he comes, I strongly encourage all to give Mary a chance and to place our hope in the hands the most beautiful, most tender and sweet Virgin Mary. Our light, our sweetness and our hope. Fr. Trinidad

From the Desk of Fr. Trinidad

Growing up in Southern California, it never dawned on me how incredibly devoted my family was to the Virgin Mary. So much so that Advent was just as much about Mary as it was about Jesus. Hence, one of my favorite parts of Advent was the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It is in this context that I would like to speak about “hope.”

Hope is a word with a lot of weight.

Hence the petitioners have a right to call the mediator their “hope.”

The King of Heaven, being infinite Goodness, has given us His own Mother as our Mother and intercessor, and has granted her all power to help us.

Keep and guard us under your wings of mercy, for after God, we have no hope but in you.”

In this season of Advent we await in hope for the return of our King and Savior. Nevertheless, until he comes, I strongly encourage all to give Mary a chance and to place our hope in the hands the most beautiful, most tender and sweet Virgin Mary. Our light, our sweetness and our hope.

Mark Your Calendars Jonathan Ryan, Organist/Choirmaster, and the St. Mary’s Music Program invites you to an evening of Christmas Lessons & Carols with our Schola Cantorum on Sunday, December 23 at 6:00 p.m. This beautiful Christmas musical evening lasts about an hour and centers around Scripture readings and beloved Christmas carols. Modeled after the world-famous Lessons & Carols held annually at King’s College, Cambridge in England, it is appropriate for all ages. We hope that both parishioners as well as those from our Nutley and northern New Jersey community will take advantage of this special opportunity rarely given in our area outside of New York City. Music will include cherished Christmas carols for all to sing such as O Come All Ye Faithful, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing to Christmas pieces in Spanish to modern choral masterworks. As we have invited some of the finest singers from New York City and New Jersey to sing with our new Schola Cantorum, which regularly sings for the 12:00 Sunday Mass, we are excited to present this inspiring way to prepare ourselves for Christmas. A free-will offering will be taken.
