OUR FATHER IN FAITH The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham and to his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called “father” in faith by more people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God’s call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham’s faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? How fortunate we are to have Father Abraham as our guide and example! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dear Sacred Heart Parishioners,

Greetings to all. I’m Manuel “Manny” Recera. I’m glad to be back to working fulltime in the parish and I am looking forward to getting to know and serve you as your Pastor. I was born and educated in the Philippines in Mindanao. I am the second child in a family of eight siblings. After High School, I studied at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary, Taloto,

Tagbilarin City, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and English. I studied theology at San Carlos Major Seminary in Cebu City to earn my Master’s Degree in Divinity. I was ordained on May 3, 1985 by my late Bishop Felix S. Zafra and was assigned as Parochial Vicar in my hometown at Holy Cross Church, Siocon Zamboanga Del Norte. A year after, I was assigned to our Diocesan College Seminary at Cor Jesu, to teach and act as Spiritual Director for seminarians. After four years, I was sent by my bishop for further study here in US at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago for my MA in Theology. I served at Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Transfiguration Church in Chicago. In 1996, I went home to the Philippines to serve my diocese for ten years. I worked as Parochial Vicar and Administrator in the parishes. At the same time, I worked in Campus Ministry in three Diocesan Colleges. Then, I was assigned as the VP for Religious Education in Catholic Schools and Colleges in the Diocese. Though I was busy working in the diocese, my bishop sent me for a year’s study in Manila and Tagaytay City. After my formation, I worked as a member of the staff of the CBCP on Episcopal Commission on Clergy. My last assignment was as the Rector of Cor Jesu College Seminary. In 2006, my bishop permitted me to work here in the US for ten years. I worked at the Diocese of Rockford for three years as Parochial Vicar at the parishes of St Joseph, St Mary and St Thomas Aquinas in Freeport, Illinois. Then, I moved to seek a warmer place (for I was always sick during winter time in Illinois.) I worked in the Diocese of Las Vegas and was the Parochial Vicar at St Joseph Husband of Mary’s Church. After a year I was invited by my classmate from the Archdiocese of San Francisco and visited Monterey. I feel at home and love the Monterey Peninsula. With the help of some Filipino priests, I applied to work in the Diocese of Monterey and Bishop Garcia accepted me. I worked as Chaplain at Palma High School and at the Newman Center at CSUMB in Marina. I was a resident priest here at Sacred Heart Church during that time. After a year and a half, I was sent by Bishop Garcia to Santa Cruz to work as Chaplain-Priest at Dominican Hospital for three and a half years. Last June was my 10th year of working here in the US and I was asked by my new bishop in the Philippines to make a decision either to stay in the US or to go back to the Philippines to serve. After prayer and discernment, I decided to stay in the Diocese of Monterey. I was formally released or excardinated by my bishop from my diocese last June. I will be officially incardinated to the Diocese of Monterey this August 14, 2016. I am happy and honored to be part of this Diocese. All my ministries from different dioceses were full of challenges and I have been blessed with grace-filled experiences. I am looking forward to serving Sacred Heart Parish and I do hope and pray that with your love, prayers, and active participation, I will be a good and holy servant of the Lord and His people. God bless us all.

Queridos Feligreses del Sagrado Corazón,

Saludos a todos. Soy Manuel "Manny" Recera.

Some Sacred Heart parishioners go and visit prisoners in the jails, and prisons, and juvenile hall. If you would like to hear about their experiences and consider if this is a ministry you would like to try, you’re invited to a meeting in the Blue Room, on Wednesday, August 24 at 7 PM. For more information call Deacon David at 772-8218.

Estuve en la cárcel y me visitaste. Mt 25:36.
