Editor’s Letter/Lettre de la rédaction

Here at Porter, we’re getting pretty excited about the dawning of this particular New Year. As Nina Simone sang, “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day...and we’re feeling good.” Why? Because 2012 promises to be an exceptional year in all kinds of ways. It’s an Olympic year, it’s the Chinese Year of the Dragon – one of the most auspicious in the calendar – and Franklin the Turtle will be appearing on a postage stamp. It also happens to be a leap year.

We hope our proposals in this first re:porter of2012 will be as stimulating as any others that mightcome your way this year. Our Weekender featurescales the snowy heights in Vermont and samplesthe après-ski gourmet highlights on offer in themaple syrup state. Meanwhile, our Neighbourhoodfeature raises a glass to Walkerville, Ontario, foundedby Hiram Walker, owner and producer of CanadianClub Whisky, and now home to cutting-edge barsand restaurants. And looking further ahead, ourWorkplace feature quizzes the Chicago ArchitectureFoundation on the future shape of our cities.

Wherever you’re bound in this annus mirabilis, wehope that Porter will be playing a part in making itmemorable. As Franklin the Turtle would undoubtedlysay, it’s a year for coming out of your shell, getting inthe swim – and pushing the envelope.

Whisky TownWindsor’s Walkerville neighbourhood, steeped in history (and a bit of booze), is the city’s pre-eminent dining and shopping destination. À Windsor, le voisinage de Walkerville empreint d’histoire (et d’un doigtd’alcool) est le lieu idéal pour se restaurer et magasiner.

Walkerville doit son nom à Hiram Walker, le propriétaired’origine américaine du Canadian Club Whisky. Walker abâti une grandiose ville éponyme sur les terres entourant sadistillerie, garantissant ainsi des logements décents, de bonnesécoles et des services publics pour ses employés. Pour cela, ilfit appel aux services d’Albert Kahn, l’architecte à qui Detroitdoit nombre de ses bâtiments classiques.

Walkerville fut intégrée à Windsor en 1935, mais elleconserve son atmosphère de petite ville bucolique et sonarchitecture victorienne et Tudor. Mais les profs d’universitéont beau avoir remplacé les ouvriers, Walkerville conserve soncaractère iconoclaste. En outre, ses boutiques et restaurants sedistinguent de ceux de Windsor. Hiram aurait été fier de voir cela.

Walkerville gets its name from Hiram Walker, the American-born owner of Canadian Club Whisky. Walker built a grand,eponymous company town on the farmland surroundinghis distillery, ensuring that his employees had good homes,schools and public services. He tapped Albert Kahn, thearchitect behind many of Detroit’s classic buildings, to help.

Walkerville officially became part of Windsor in 1935, but itretains its bucolic, small-town feel and Victorian and Tudor-stylearchitecture. The cottages might today be owned by moreuniversity professors than factory workers, but Walkerville stillpossesses a charming degree of self-sufficient iconoclasm. Andits boutiques and restaurants are unlike anything you’ll find inWindsor. No doubt, old Hiram would be proud.

Gourmet EmporiumThis double-decker spot, owned by neurosurgeon Balraj Jhawar and his wife, Chantal, features a something-for-everybody tapas menu. Try the seven-course prix fixe, which might allow you to sample everything from vegetarian samosas to seared ahi tuna and potatoes bravas. A large stage dominates the first-floor dining room, and a salsa band provides the beat for a weekly Latin dance party. Vito’s PizzeriaWhile two-year-old Vito’s isn’t located in the traditional Little Italy ’hood, it arguably offers Windsor's most authentic Italian cuisine. The focal point of the elegant, exuberant dining room is a tiled, wood-burning stove that turns out crisp, whole-wheat, thin-crust pies both traditional (think egg and prosciutto) and contemporary (the artichokes and mushrooms on the vegan Verdura are so perfectly roasted, you won’t miss the cheese). Kildare HouseWalkerville’s most beloved watering holegot a facelift in 2010, but new ownerVito Maggio didn’t tamper much withthis pub’s snug, cheerful ambience.(He changed the name, with a wink,to O’Maggio’s Kildare House, thoughno local calls it that.) Built in 1855 for aHiram Walker employee, the two-floormansion is a warren of wood-linedrooms. Twelve beers are on tap, includingfaves like Newcastle, Harp and, naturally,Guinness. The shop carries a wide range of men’s, women’s and children’s apparel that suits each pursuit (yoga pants can easily be worn on the treadmill). Everything’s made in Canada or the US, and Carvalho insists that each Yoga Journal-endorsed piece – as well as the abundant lines of jewellery – be produced by eco- and charity-conscious companies. “It’s a good, happy place,” she says. Far Flung FoodsProprietor Greg Williams spent a lot of time travelling the world in his previous life as a computer analyst. Now, the world comes to him – in the form of cheeses from Italy, France, Spain and Québec; Field Gate organic meats from co-op farms all over southwestern Ontario; hot sauces and rubs from Louisiana; and the best mustard in Canada, Kozlik’s. All these products, most of which are impossible to get anywhere else in Windsor, are packed into his small shop at the Market Square, a year-round farmers’ market open every day except Monday. Guided tours of the company’s waterfront headquarters – a replica of an Italian palace that Walker visited in the 19th century – provide a history lesson and a chance to sample the legendary liquor. Walkerville definitely has a small-town feel. My kids don’t have to be drivento school; we walk to the market. It’s a realgem of a neighbourhood. In my apartment building – my uncle also lived in this building 30 years ago – there are a lot of people my age. We have everything we need. We never need to leave. We have a good reputation and a wealth of knowledge in that space. It’s been the anchor that’s allowed us to broaden our scope into traditional technologies, like IT.

The US is still very much the leader in biotech. In Canada we’re in a predicament. We have tremendous scientific know-how at the university level, but we don’t have sufficient funding. Our job is to help companies grow – hopefully to the point where they can partner with a pharmaceutical company or go out on their own.

Investment bankers aren’t terribly popular right now.But we play a valuable, if not critical, role in financing a wide range of companies. Everyone recognizes that there’s a strong need for that. Though, there are some unsavoury types in this industry who have created a negative perception.

A lot of people think investment bankers are always making a ton of money. In reality it’s a cyclical business. I’ve seen enough to remain cautiously optimistic. I think creativity and entrepreneurship will prevail.

I live in Montréal, but I spend three or four days a week in Toronto. The commute is a necessary evil. Thanks to Porter, it’s less evil than it was. Billy Bishop Airport is a godsend. I’m one of those people who play the door-to-door-world-record-time game, and I can tell you that it currently stands at just less than three hours. I’ve got it down to an art now.

I view flying as an opportunity for downtime. I generally have a pretty busy day, and while I’m flying, no one can really bother me. I clear work aside and read a book or even nap.

The quality of service on Porter shines through. There are times when I’ve been late for flights and missed them, and they’ve been quick to get me on the next one with minimal fuss. I also love the amenities on board. When you’re rushing around and you’ve missed lunch or whatever, that in-flight snack can tide you over. I have a big appetite, so that’s a real plus. We didn’t really have that service outside business class until Porter came along. They’ve set a higher bar.

Do I have a life outside work? Well, work is a passion, and as an entrepreneur who’s building a business, it takes up a lot of my time. My wife’s a writer, so she understands the need to focus on a job. I have two young children and an older daughter, and I give them as much attention as I can. I’m also passionate about cycling, so I do as much of that as I can. Work, family, cycling – that’s pretty much my life.

Les gens croient que nous nous en mettons plein les poches. En réalité, c’est une activité cyclique. J’ai assez d’expérience pour afficher un optimisme prudent. Je pense que la créativité et l’entrepreneuriat finiront par prévaloir.

Je vis à Montréal, mais je passe trois ou quatre jours par semaine à Toronto. Le voyage est une corvée inévitable. Grâce à Porter, c’est moins pénible. L’aéroport de Billy Bishop est un don du ciel. Je m’amuse à chronométrer mon trajet de porte à porte et je peux affirmer que mon record est d’un peu moins de trois heures. C’est tout un art.

Pendant le vol, je me détends. En vol, personne ne peut me déranger, alors j’en profite pour lire ou je fais la sieste.

La qualité de service de Porter est excellente. Il est arrivé que je sois en retard et que je rate mon avion. À chaque fois, on m’a mis sur le vol suivant sans complications. J’adore aussi le confort à bord. Si je n’ai pas dîné à cause du travail, cette petite collation servie à bord est pratique. Comme j’ai de l’appétit, c’est vraiment quelque chose que j’apprécie. Ce service n’existait pas (sauf en classe affaires) avant Porter.

Ai-je une vie en dehors du travail? Mon job emploi ma passion, et comme je suis l’entrepreneur qui a créé cette activité, cela me prend du temps. Comme ma femme est écrivaine, elle comprend le besoin de se concentrer sur un travail. J’ai deux jeunes enfants et une fille plus âgée, et je leur consacre autant de temps qu’il m’est possible. J’essaie aussi de faire du vélo, une autre passion. Le travail, ma famille, le vélo – voilà ma vie en raccourci.

In 1885, with business booming at his farm equipmentmanufacturing company, John Jacob Glessner commissionedthe architect Henry Hobson Richardson to build him a home.Richardson created a masterpiece. The striking South Sidehouse, which was notable for its distinctive floor plan andbright, private courtyard, offered a clear expression of thearchitect’s revivalist style, Richardsonian Romanesque.

À sa mort en 1936, Glessner légua sa demeure à l’AmericanInstitute of Architects (AIA). Son entretien s’avéra toutefois tropcoûteux pour cette institution et après avoir changé de mainsplusieurs fois, la maison était menacée de destruction au granddam de plusieurs citoyens : avec Frank Lloyd Wright et LouisSullivan, Richardson constitue la Sainte Trinité de l’architectureaméricaine. En outre, la maison Glessner incarne une époquecruciale pour Chicago, celle de la reconstruction après le grandincendie, lorsqu’un boom immobilier met l’architecture aucœur de la conscience collective. C’est ainsi qu’un groupe decitoyens rachète la maison pour 35 000 $ en obtenant le statutde National Historic Landmark et forme ce qui va devenir par lasuite la Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF).

En 45 années d’existence, la CAF a connu une croissanceextraordinaire et a sans aucun doute dépassé tous les espoirsde ses fondateurs. L’outil le plus connu de la CAF est sans doute la croisière fluviale, une visite guidée le long de la Chicago River qui permet d’admirer 50 bâtiments importants, de Willis Tower (ex-Sears Tower) à Marina City (les épis de maïs). Les adeptes d’autres moyens de transport ne sont pas oubliés : la CAF propose des visites en bus, à pied, à bicyclette et en Segway.

Le cœur de la fondation est le Santa Fe Building, son siègede Michigan Avenue conçu par Daniel Burnham. On y trouveune boutique de design éclectique et, dans l’atrium lumineux,plusieurs expositions. La plus populaire est la superbemaquette de la ville de 30 m2. (« Au départ, ce devait être uneexposition temporaire, dit Osmond, mais elle fait désormaispartie des meubles.») On peut aussi admirer Design on the

In the 45 years since, the CAF has grown tremendously, exceeding, no doubt, the wildest hopes of its founding members. Today, it’s among the world’s leading architecture and design organizations, remarkable both for its vast range of programs – from tours and exhibitions to lectures and debates – and for its reach: The CAF engages nearly half a million people each year.

“I certainly never get bored,” says president and CEO Lynn Osmond. “It’s always, Which hat am I putting on today?” Osmond, a native of St. Catharines, Ontario, who started her career at the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto, has lived in Chicago for 15 years and speaks with a broad Midwestern accent. The CAF’s activities may seem disparate, she says, “but there is a unifying theme to everything we do. It is all about public understanding of architecture – connecting people and place through the power of design. And we have different tools to reach different audiences.”

The CAF’s most famous tool, perhaps, is the river cruise,a 90-minute boat trip along the Chicago River, which offers alook at more than 50 significant buildings, from the Willis Tower(aka the Sears Tower) to Marina City (aka the corncobs). Thoseinclined toward other modes of transportation are also wellserved: The CAF offers tours by bus, foot, bicycle and Segway.

The heart of the foundation is its headquarters, in the Daniel Burnham-designed Santa Fe Building on Michigan Avenue. The building houses an eclectic design shop and, in the sun-filled atrium, a handful of exhibitions. Most popular is the stunningly detailed 320-square-foot scale model of the city. (“We thought it was a temporary exhibit,” says Osmond, “but

En architecture, apparence et réalité sont souvent différentes dit Gregory Dreicer, le vice-président de l’interprétation et des expositions. « Les gens pensent que tout est terminé avec l’achèvement d’un bâtiment. Mais il continue à évoluer. Aussi, nous envisageons les bâtiments comme des processus et non des objets. »

Aux yeux de la CAF, les gens – leurs interactions avec les bâtiments et les communautés qui se forment autour d’eux – sont aussi importants que les piliers et les parapets. « La CAF

(Ronan transforms the El train into a suspended monorail and pedestrian pathway; Vendrell replaces Roscoe Village’s quiet streets with parks.)

The CAF’s mandate, clearly, has evolved far beyond its founding moment at the Glessner House. In fact, the CAF no longer fights for preservation at all; instead, through lectures and the Chicago Debates series, it offers a nonpartisan forum for all voices. “We never take a stand on whether a building should be torn down,” says Osmond, “but it’s fun for both sides to get into it.” Last June the CAF hosted “Re-use It or Lose It,” a debate about plans to tear down the Bertrand Goldberg-designed Prentice Women’s Hospital. It pitted a redevelopment-friendly zoning lawyer against a preservationist. “We want to help people form their own opinions,” says Osmond.

The shift, from advocate to neutral facilitator, not only lends the CAF credibility as an educator and policy consultant; it also reflects a broader philosophical shift in which the organization has come to acknowledge the complexity of the subject at hand. In architecture, things are seldom what they seem, says Gregory Dreicer, vice president of interpretation and exhibitions. “People think you build a building and that’s it. But once it’s up, it’s changing. The most important thing for us is approaching buildings as processes – not as objects.”

For the CAF, people – the way they interact with buildings and form communities around them – are as important as pillars and parapets. “The CAF isn’t just about beautiful

buildings,” says Osmond. “It’s about streets, public spaces, transportation, neighbourhoods, communities. Really, it’s about understanding cities.”

The CAF has developed textbooks and curricula, which are used by schools in 45 states and nine countries, and its community outreach has given Chicagoans of all stripes, says Osmond, a “great vocabulary to talk about architecture.” Shari Massey, the foundation’s CFO, is quick to add that for the CAF, architectural education goes far beyond distinguishing Wright from Mies van der Rohe. “We expose the public to issues that impact their communities,” she says. “We empower them to understand how to make their own communities more livable.”

No doubt, the CAF’s range of activities is vast. (“I have a hardtime getting my head around it sometimes,” admits Massey.)Still, according to Osmond, the greatest difficulty isn’t actuallykeeping up; it’s opting out. “We have so many opportunitiespresented to us, and the biggest challenge is saying no,” shesays. “We use Mies van der Rohe’s expression ‘Less is more.’So we’ve been asking ourselves: What are we going to give upto grow? And as Chicago grows, how do we grow with it? ”

Vermont’s charms might be best enjoyed in Burlington, a leafy, laid-back college town, which is the ideal starting point for any winter adventure. Begin by stocking up on supplies at the Outdoor Gear Exchange, a shop that will instantly put you in a Vermont state of mind. Those mad enough to climb frozen waterfalls will appreciate the ice axes and ice screws. Fair-weather hikers should bypass the sarcophagi-shaped sleeping bags and insteadperuse the brightly patterned made-in-Vermont Darn Tough socks and puffy, down-filled jackets.

Built in 1930, the Flynnwas meticulously restored to its original Art Decosplendour in 2000 (witness the incredibly detailedstencilling along the moldings in the lobby and theornate, carved murals beside the stage). MikhailBaryshnikov danced here, Sonny Rollins blewhis sax here and, most recently, acts like LucindaWilliams and Laurie Anderson have dropped in.

Queen Anne homes. As you move away from the town centre, Burlington’s streets become wider, packed with rambling Victorian mansions, some peeling and dilapidated, others lovingly maintained or restored. Part of the latter group is the Willard Street Inn, run by the disarmingly friendly Davis family: mom and dad Katie and Larry, daughter Carrie and son Jordan. Built in 1881 by Charles Woodhouse, a Vermont senator, the 14-room inn has been modernized with Wi-Fi, en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. “Ski reports for all nearby mountains are on the dashboard of the communal Mac in the living room,” Jordan, unofficial IT guy, says. And that smell? There’s always something in the oven at the Willard. Carrie bakes cupcakes, and guests receive a daily delivery of fresh chocolate chip cookies. Breakfast might include a hot peach coffee cake, served alongside eggs and homemade granola. When it snows, Larry likens the marble-floored solarium, where breakfast is served, to “a giant snow globe.”

On your drive to Stowe, treat your passengers to a beer tasting at the Alchemist Cannery. The brewery makes just one beer here: Heady Topper, its highly praised flagship double IPA. Why cans, you may ask? They’re more eco-friendly, requiring less energy to manufacture, ship and recycle than bottles. Just go easy on the tasting, drivers: With an alcohol percentage of eight, Heady will go straight to your head.

Pulling up to the valet at the five-star Stowe Mountain Lodge, the crisp air will dispel any residual beer buzz. This 312-room ski-in-ski-out resort, opened in 2008, is part European alpine village, part oversized, early-20th-century New England cabin and all 21st-century luxe. An alpine concierge service arranges everything from dinner reservations to ski lessons, while the ski valet will tune your equipment, even warming your boots or lugging your gear to the chairlift.

Better, assemble tomorrow’s picnic lunch, then head to Waterbury for a farm-tastic feast at Hen of the Wood. In a dimly lit 19th-century gristmill, with stone walls and wood beams, the open kitchen churns out dishes like cornmeal polenta with duck sausage and fried oysters. Pair that pillowy gnocchi and local grass-fed porter steak with something red from the naughtily non-local wine list – say, a Piedmont Barbera d’Alba?

The next day, between outdoor excursions andeating yourself silly, make time for art. Built in 1861in the Greek Revival style, the building that housesthe Helen Day Art Center, in Stowe Village, wasoriginally a high school. For little ones who quicklytire of the slopes, the ground-floor library has a well-stocked kids’ section and affords a welcome retreatfrom the crowds, a block away on Main Street.Upstairs is the art, all of it contemporary, much of itby local and emerging artists.

For nostalgic types, a little antiquing is in order. SirRichards Antiques Center, in Waterbury Center, hasa well-edited collection. There are sunny rooms filledwith furniture from as far back as the 18th century,fine china, jewellery, furs, framed art and old posters.If you’re committed to travelling light, check out thevintage postcards. Some are printed with images ofjolly skiers enjoying the pleasures of 1950s Stowe,the same snow spread out like cake icing under afamiliar Technicolor blue sky – small mementos ofthat timeless Green Mountain magic.

Chaquenouveau venu suit un programme de formation de quatresemaines dont deux sont consacrées à la sécurité. Leséquipages reçoivent une formation complète sur chaque aspectde la sécurité, des connaissances générales sur l’appareil auxprocédures d’urgence en passant par l’équipement et la sécuritédes passagers. Le programme est si complet qu’en cas debesoin ils n’auront aucun mal à se le rappeler. Ils reçoivent aussiune formation de secouriste de niveau C, ce qui leur permet detraiter des difficultés respiratoires ou d’accoucher une maman.Certes, ce dernier scénario ne s’est jamais produit chez Porter,mais je touche du bois pour que cela continue.

I’m an in-flight purser for Porter, but I am also part of the team that helps train the flight attendants. Every new flight attendant goes through a four-week training program, and two and a half of those weeks are devoted to safety training. The flight attendants will be instructed in every aspect of in-flight safety, from general aircraft knowledge to emergency procedures, equipment and passenger safety. By the time we’ve finished, the training is so ingrained that it can be recalled instantly should it be needed. The first-aid training is to Level C, which means we can deal with everything from rescue breathing to delivering a baby. Not that anyone’s had to tackle the latter scenario on a Porter flight, and I’m going to knock on wood right here that no one ever does.

The other week and a half of training covers customer service. Porter prides itself on going the extra mile with customer service, and when we’re recruiting, we look for people with previous customer service experience that we can draw on. We take that and put our “flying refined” stamp on it. I’ve seen other airlines where the cabin crew can barely be bothered to come out and ask if you want a drink; they’re too busy chatting away in the back. We impress upon new recruits that Porter is a different deal; people that work here love the company and love to interact with the passengers. It’s a genuine boutique operation, with an open-door policy, and people feel they have a vested interest in the company and its bottom line. Look after people, and you’ll have repeat customers, and everybody wins.

What are the little things that make a really big difference to a passenger’s perception of an airline? I think it’s as basic as the cabin crew smiling and saying please and thank you, and making eye contact and treating people with respect, offering to hang up jackets and assisting with bags. It’s about creating a club-like atmosphere where anyone can be a member. It’s about making it personal where regular passengers are often greeted by name, and their preferences will be remembered and attended to: “I know you like a glass of red wine,” “I think you prefer tea without milk,” that kind of thing.

Right before this job, I taught martial arts for many years. I trained kids from the age of three right up to adults of 70 in karate. Before that, I was in marketing and advertising, so I have that kind of branding background, too, and while they’re obviously very different disciplines, I think that both feed directly into what I’m doing now. I’m a little bit older than your average flight attendant – I’m 40 – even though I still try to keep a fresh outlook. I’m just saying that I have more life experience to draw on when it comes to training others. Because safety in particular can be a very dry, black-and-white topic, you have to be very dynamic as an instructor to get people involved and enthused. I try to focus people’s minds and animate an eight-hour classroom day.

What drew me to the airline industry? I was very fortunate to meet a friend who turned me on to Porter. Having a career change in your late 30s is very challenging, but I thought, OK, let’s give it a whirl. I started as a flight attendant and was invited to apply for a trainer position a few months later because of my background. And I’ve actually been involved in initial or recurrent training for every single flight attendant at the company – all 245.

It’s hard for me to be a passenger on a plane, especially on another airline. I’ll see things, and I’ll think, “I can’t believe they’re doing that.” I’ll get quite twitchy if I see some sub-standard customer service. It’s hard to stop myself from saying, “OK, let me through. I’ll serve these rows.” I think that I have aknack for people. I’m not saying I’m awesome, but I’ve foundmy niche here.

Une semaine et demie est par ailleurs consacrée au service clientèle. Porter se targue d’en faire toujours un peu plus, aussi, lorsque nous recrutons, nous cherchons des gens avec une bonne expérience en matière de service à la clientèle et nous raffinons leurs connaissances. J’ai déjà vu des compagnies où c’est à peine si les hôtesses daignent vous proposer une boisson parce qu’elles sont trop occupées à bavarder à l’arrière. Nous soulignons aux recrues que chez Porter c’est différent. Le personnel aime cette compagnie et s’occupe des passagers. C’est une opération de charme, avec une politique de transparence. Les employés sont dévoués à l’entreprise. Si l’on s’occupe bien des passagers, ils deviennent des habitués et tout le monde y gagne.

Quels sont les petits détails qui font une grande différence surla perception qu’ont les passagers d’une compagnie aérienne ?Je pense que ce sont des choses assez élémentaires, commeavoir le sourire, dire « s’il vous plaît », établir un contact visuel,traiter les passagers avec respect, offrir d’accrocher les vesteset de mettre les sacs dans les compartiments. Il s’agit de créerune atmosphère de club dont tout le monde peut devenirmembre. Il faut offrir un service personnalisé en appelant lespassagers réguliers par leur nom et en se rappelant leurspréférences : « Je sais que vous aimez le vin rouge » ou « Vousprenez votre thé sans lait, je crois ». Ce genre de détails.

Avant mon poste actuel, j’ai enseigné les arts martiaux pendant des années. Au karaté, j’avais des élèves de 3 ans à 70 ans. Et avant, j’ai travaillé dans le marketing et la publicité, ce qui m’a donné cette expérience en matière d’image de marque. S’il s’agit bien sûr de disciplines différentes, je crois qu’elles m’ont néanmoins préparé à mon activité courante. Je suis un peu plus âgé que la moyenne du personnel de cabine – j’ai 40 ans – mais j’essaye de rester jeune d’esprit.

Mais cela me donne l’avantage d’avoir plus d’expérience lorsqu’il faut former des membres d’équipage. Car, la sécurité en particulier, peut s’avérer un sujet assez ingrat à enseigner. Il faut que l’instructeur soit dynamique et inventif pour arriver à susciter l’intérêt de son public. Je fais en sorte que mes collègues se concentrent lorsque j’anime un cours de formation de huit heures.

Ce qui m’a attiré dans le secteur du transport aérien ? J’ai rencontré un ami qui m’a parlé de Porter. Changer de carrière lorsque l’on approche de la quarantaine est un peu un défi, mais je me suis dit « pourquoi pas ». J’ai d’abord été agent de bord puis, après quelques mois, du fait de mon parcours professionnel, j’ai été encouragé à poser ma candidature au poste de formateur. Et je peux affirmer que j’ai participé à la formation initiale ou aux stages de remise à niveau de tout le personnel navigant (245 personnes !) de la compagnie.

C’est difficile pour moi d’être un simple passager sur un avion, surtout sur une autre compagnie, car je critique tout et je me dis : « Mais qu’est-ce qu’ils font ? » Si je vois un mauvais service, je dois me retenir de me lever et de dire : « Allez, laissez-moi m’occuper de cette rangée. » Je crois que je sais instinctivement établir un bon contact avec la clientèle. Sans me vanter, je pense avoir trouvé ma voie.
