PRISM updates Surveys were completed by the FL-PRISM and results are available on the Google

Drive- everyone is added to- send email if you have difficulty with accessing information. Survey looked at where FL-PRISM should focus efforts and there were four key areas that respondents indicated that were most important: Create and distribute educational materials (n=10), Host invasive species educational workshops (n=9), Conduct invasive species management workshops (n=8) and Pursue funding for PRISM activities (n=11). Results are available on the Google Drive or by request.

Stakeholder meeting update- 57 people in attendance from all over the FL-PRISM. Gregg Sargis, Dave Adams, James Balyczak, Mark Whitmore and Toni DiTomasso provided introduction and spoke based on their background and research. Surveys were completed by the FL-PRISM and results are available on the Google Drive.

Three HWS students are conducting research studies within the FL-PRISM – one student focusing on Hydrilla at the north end of Cayuga and Seneca Lakes and the canal between them.

Conference attendance, iMap trainings, outreach to school, ISAW, etc. Hilary Mosher indicated that a matrix has been developed with the various groups

and potential partners within the FL-PRISM for getting the word out about PRISM and for education and outreach. Mosher indicated that there is a wealth of information and resources within our PRISM that can and should be utilized. Also, Montezuma Audubon Center has several IS outreach programs- ‘Get Into the Marsh’- and PRISM will hope to be involved in their programs.

Hilary will coordinate and conduct an iMap Invasive training for a group of 15 or more people. Send request to Hilary as appropriate.

Partner updates Bob Duckett- indicated he is interested in starting an HWA task force Jules Ginenthal Cornell Plantations- Stewardship crew does IS plant management.

Have a done a lot of HWA treatments (maybe 1,000), starting again this year. Natural areas academy, which is similar to a master gardeners program has many volunteer opportunities

Abby Dylag (FLI) – HWS student who is identifying regions where black and pale swallow-wort occur in the FL-region and studying site conditions where they exits.

John Gibbs- Forest stewardship plan- relief committee NY forest owners, Collaboration with ESF and Cornell- 5500 acres on state land, 4500 as wildlife management areas

Staychock- Tabling at the Yates Co. Fair Lyons- Tabling at the State Fair with the OPRHP for all 12 days. Implementing a

master watershed stewards program and have trained seven people so far and one or two will be working with IS, master gardeners, gardening invasives,

Baker- Syracuse roadside herbicide treatment is completed in some counties. Traditionally, DOT has worked with hogweed, but DEC is working on this program currently. The problem for DOT is that the tree crew are primary applicators, and with EAB in the area, the crew will be splitting time. DOT has treated private property for hogweed if landowners were ok with it. They are finding good results with roundup, but problem is the thousands of seeds (hogweed) that stay viable for years. But, they are having good results in areas with minor infestations. Issue with EAB- DOT is looking to possibly purchase an arborjet and have applicators inject ash trees, but currently, the program has not been implemented.

Harman- Rochester region DOT, landscape architect to focus on preventing the

spread of invasives by having contractors avoid spread invasives by washing equipment and using wash stations. The problem with treating in areas where private land is adjacent is that the IS spread so they focus on preventing this spread.

Kristina- Forestry educator focused mostly on terrestrial IS- EAB task force has been very successful. There is funding to expand the task force to a regional effort. There is a public forum on June 30th to address HWA Spafford, NY. ACTION ITEM: Send information about the HWA Town Hall event to FL-PRISM. Currently including IS in all of the volunteer training programs. There is a small contract with Dept. of Ag and Markets for education. It is very hard to get the purple detection traps for EAB. They have worked with the County and with Aphis. DEC has also provided some for

research in determining the extent of EAB infestation. Wunderlich- discovered EAB last year in Cayuga Co, started a small task force

formed by a former CCE employee. A student is currently mapping ash trees in Auburn. Bruce Natale is an environmental engineer and part of the working group.

Hargrave- SUNY Morrisville has 1000 acres of forest for IS research and student projects. Hargrave will teach an IS course and will have student conduct IS research projects.

Albrecht- Saw Japanese Barberry at a CountryMax in Palmyra, also observing what the SWCD are offering for homeowners, lets staff know about IS status. Writes letters to editor of local newspapers. Part of NYS DEC Giant Hogweed program, has seen improvements and is in her 5th summer of hogweed removal

Sheridan (DEC) - Cornell has a list of deer resistant plants – lists barberry as one. Emily will let CCE ISP team know and see about getting this revised. Looking to advance an ecosystem based management approach within the Great Lakes system great lakes EGL- collective fed, state and local GLRI 2014-2019 action plan online- adaptive management and climate remediation

Gilman- Teaches a Field Botany course- with over 100 students that have collected specimen. He maintains an herbarium with 15,000 specimen sheets and is available to assist with taxonomic identification. Gilman wrote Count Flora Atlas in 1983

Staltman- Cornell Native Plants Society- has many roles at Cornell and in the community regarding plants. Japanese stiltgrass is an issue in the Ithaca Natural Areas and is the first confirmed population in the FL and has spread to surrounding areas in Ithaca. HWA is also an issue. IS a big problem with 4 natural areas and 6 mi creek reservoir- need to garner effort on how to focus on problems-. Anna looking to work with the city forester to determine level of HWA infestation.

Deller- FL National Forest where ~ 1/3 is in grazing allotments. They have been doing botanical inventory and treating IS through broadcast spraying in grassland areas, riparian and woody areas where knapweeds and thistles are an issue. Stiltgrass has been discovered and worked to have a hand pulling day and contacted adjacent land owners.

Finger Lakes -N/S distinction- at this point, the group decided to keep the FL-PRISM one group and not split. Group could revisit this at a later date. No objections, there is interest in revisiting this in the future. Tabled for future meeting
