16
“Thou anointest my head with oil…” (Psalm 23:5) BY FR. JOHN MEMORICH The practice of anointing with perfumed oil and/or ointments was quite common amongst the Hebrews. To them, it was a welcoming sign of hospitality to guests, as well as a sign of “belonging” or inclusion (Luke 7:38, 46). It was the custom of the Jews in like manner to anoint themselves with oil, as a means of refreshing or invigorating their bodies (Deut. 28:40; Ruth 3:3; 2 Sam. 14:2; Ps. 104:15); a custom continued amongst the Arabs to this present day. By providing a generous amount of this oil to the hair of face of guests, it acted as a revitalizing emollient after being in the hot, dry, arid heat. Think of how nice it is when you apply scented hand or body lotions labeled as “invigorating” or “for stress relief.” The act of anointing with oil also carried over into the Jewish religious realms. Such scented oils played a significant role in the consecration of Priests (Ex. 29:29; Lev. 4:3), Prophets (1 Kings 19:16; 1 Chr. 16:22; Ps. 105:15), and Kings (1 Sam. 16:13; 2 Sam. 2:4). [Note: anointing a king was equivalent to crowning him and is something still practiced to this day during coronation ceremonies in countries that have retained royal figureheads.] God also deemed that the priests should anoint the sacred vessels (Ex. 30:26) to consecrate and make them holy for ceremonial usage. Oil was used also for medicinal purposes. It was applied to the sick (Ps. 109:18; Isa. 1:6; Mark 6:13; James 5:14), and also to wounds as mentioned in the story of the Good Samaritan who poured oil and wine upon the wounds of the beaten man (Luke 10:30-37). The bodies of the dead were sometimes anointed (Mark 14:8; Luke 23:56). Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ was also “anointed” (John 1:41; Ps. 2:2; Dan. 9:25, 26; Acts 9:22; 17:2, 3; 18:5, 28), In fact, the term Christ, which derives from the Greek word Christos, is a direct translation of the Hebrew word, Messiah, meaning the Anointed One.” Jesus was “anointed” by the Holy Spirit as He came up from the waters of the Jordon after being baptized (Mark 1:10) to be The High Priest, The Holy Prophet, and The True King – as well as The Sacred Vessel by which our salvation comes! Thus, we too, as the Anointed-One’s Church, His Inheritance, His “chosen people, a royal priesthood, and holy nation” (1 Peter 2:9) are anointed in Baptism and Chrismation to share in His Kingdom! An anointing that continues as we are anointed with blessed oil during vigils or during the sacrament of Holy Unction. www.StMichaelsCleveland.org | 5025 E. “Thou anointest my head with oil…” (Psalm 23:5)BY FR. JOHN MEMORICH

The practice of anointing with perfumed oil and/or ointments was quite common amongst the Hebrews. Think of how nice it is when you apply scented hand or body lotions labeled as “invigorating” or “for stress relief.”

The act of anointing with oil also carried over into the Jewish religious realms.

2:2; Dan. 9:25, 26; Acts 9:22; 17:2, 3; 18:5, 28), In fact, the term Christ, which derives from the Greek word Christos, is a direct translation of the Hebrew word, Messiah, meaning “the Anointed One.” Jesus was “anointed” by the Holy Spirit as He came up from the waters of the Jordon after being baptized (Mark 1:10) to be The High Priest, The Holy Prophet, and The True King – as well as The Sacred Vessel by which our salvation comes!

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Christ Is Born! Happy New Year St. Michaels! I hope this article finds you happy and well. With the new year come new beginnings, a chance to resolve to make our lives better and healthier.

Your church board has been hard at work this past month getting ready for our Annual Parish Meeting on February 16, 2020. All reports are being finished and turned in with the goal of presenting the state of our parish both fiscally and spiritually. Soon you will receive the annual parish Vikas. I hope that you will review it and come to the meeting with your concerns and ideas to make our parish healthier and stronger. Your parish council needs your ears and voice.

Starting next month, I will concentrate on three major concepts in my newsletter this year, devoting each month to one of the following topics:

1. Spiritual well-being of our parish2. Financial stability of our parish3. Outreach and service to our community

On a final note, we are trying to improve attendance at Saturday 5pm Vespers. We are planning a potluck dinner after Vespers once a month to this end. Vespers is the first service of the daily cycle of divine services celebrated. The liturgical day begins at sunset, so vespers is the first service of the daily cycle of divine services. Let’s resolve to start the divine services by attending Vespers.

In Christ,Ryun Louie

CHICAGO, IL [MW Diocese Communications] — Wednesday, December 18, 2019, marked the tenth anniversary of the repose of His Eminence, Archbishop Job of Chicago and the Midwest. The Faithful of the Diocese of the Midwest are asked to remember him in their prayers.

Archbishop Job was born Richard John Osacky in Chicago on March 18, 1946. He completed university studies at Northern Illinois University and, after graduating from Saint Tikhon’s Seminary, South Canaan, PA, in 1970, he served as cantor and youth director at Saint John the Baptist Church, Black Lick, PA. Concurrently, he assumed responsibilities in leading Reader Services, conducting religious education and youth work, and painting icons. It was his extraordinary affinity with Orthodox youth that gained him the recognition of the Church at large.

Fr. Joseph McCartney is the rector of Ss. Peter & Paul Church in Lorain, Ohio, and was an associate priest at Archangel Michael Orthodox Church prior to that. In 2016 due in part to the rising costs of health insurance, Fr. Joseph sought a blessing to pursue CPE and professional chaplaincy as a way to help the parish offset these costs. Upon receiving the blessing of His Grace, The Right Reverend Paul, Bishop of Chicago and the Diocese of the Midwest, he began his CPE internship at St Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, in the summer of 2016, and was subsequently accepted into the residency program in the fall.

A CPE residency program is very similar to what medical residents experience as part of their training. Chaplains learn how to minister at the bedside with patients dealing with a variety of health issues. They learn how to interact with other members of the interdisciplinary treatment team, learn about ethics in pastoral care, and many other facets of hospital life, including serving on-call rotations where they can be called anywhere in the facility.

After completing his fourth unit of CPE, Fr Joseph was hired as Director of Pastoral Care at Mount Alverna Village (a 200 bed

Catholic nursing home) in Parma, OH. With his endorsement letter from the Office of Institutional Chaplaincy, and the preparation of his materials, Fr. Joseph appeared for his first certification review in February of 2019. The certification committee felt there were a few competency areas they would like Fr. Joseph to further develop. At his subsequent review in October 2019, that committee was pleased to recommend him for certification. His certification is through The Association of Professional Chaplain’s (APC) Board of Chaplaincy Certification.

May God grant Fr. Joseph many years in both certified chaplaincy at Mount Alverna Village, and parish ministry at Sts. Peter and Paul Church!

From the Manger to the Cross, our Lord led an exemplary life: one of purity, holiness, solemnity, and pious servitude. He was born a peasant yet died as a criminal. His birth took place in a stable in the company of animals, while His death occurred in the company of thieves. As a baby He was laid in a wooden man-ger; as a man He was laid upon a wooden cross. The political leaders of His country tried to murder Him as a babe, but it was the supposed supreme religious leaders who finally succeeded where Herod had failed. Jesus’ friends willingly fled at His ar-rest, while His family was forced to flee to Egypt when He was a toddler. Christ’s hand-chosen followers abandoned Him in a moment of chaotic crisis, yet Three Kings followed a Star to be close to Him in the realm of a silent, peaceful night. The rabble brought swords, spears, and chains to detain the “Criminal,” yet the Three Wisemen brought the regal gifts of gold, frankincense,

and myrrh to the “Lawgiver.”

But despite Jesus’ humble birth and disgraceful death, our Lord completed His Father’s mission. In life He kept His heart pure and sinless. In death He became the holy sacrifice for the people who were His enemies. He obeyed when we would not. He loved what we hate and hated what we love. No wonder the angels burst into praise at His birth, while the earth shook at the inequi-ty of His death. From the Manger to the Cross He lived not for our praise, but for the glory of His Father.

Christ is Born!

PARISH NEWS

AROUND THE PARISH

WHAT’S THAT SMELL?Many of you undoubtedly smelled that bad odor that permiated the stairwell and vestibule over the last few weeks. After much research, we identified the problem as a sewer gas that was coming up through a floor drain that was covered up in the Vestibule. We apologize for the odor but are pleased to have found the root of the problem and have a plan to keep it from coming back.

THE ARCHANGEL12

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

[The above quote, attributed to Edmund Burke, was most memora-bly used by John F Kennedy in a speech he gave in 1961.]

The world often condones what the Church condemns and Chris-tians, by virtue of their very ideology, must live and function in a fallen world which expresses beliefs and customs contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Therefore, practicing the Christian Faith is oftentimes a struggle, an uphill battle; like paddling a canoe up-stream against the swift downward current of sin and moral decay. Thus, many Christians maintain a faith which is lukewarm since they prefer to “give in” to societal pressures rather than stand firm against them; validating mediocrity. Yet if no one stands up for the truth or for what is right, evil will indeed continuously triumph. Therefore, it takes someone with courage, sometimes even just one person, to make a change.

The saints of the church for centuries have provided us with pro-found examples of how to resist the societal pressures that often push one to act against their faith. At the beginning of the 5th cen-tury there was just such a saint. One who made a stance against so-ciety that can only be likened to David standing up against mighty Goliath. His name was Telemachus.

St. Telemachus is a lesser known saint in our Church, but his deed is no less noble, for his actions put an end to the gladiatorial games. In the days of the Roman Empire, the great Coliseum of Rome reg-ularly overflowed with spectators to witness human beings battle against wild beasts or against one another. The crowds, ravenous with, and fueled by bloodlust, found its greatest delight in these “games.” However, on January 1, 404 AD, as the vast crowd watched the gladiatorial games, a Syrian monk by the name of Telemachus leaped onto the Coliseum floor. He was so moved in his heart to act out against the utter disregard for the value of human life that he

cried, “In the name of God, this thing is not right! In the name of God, this thing must stop.”

As the crowds booed and jeered, Telemachus piously stated his opposi-tion to such horrific acts, which were merely for the sake of public amuse-ment. The spectators became enraged at his chastising message and began howling even louder. The masses mocked him, cursed, and threw food at him. Eventually, amidst the grow-ing hysteria, they began to throw stones. Everyone was caught up in the frenzy, but in the end, as the dust settled, this gentle monk lay dead upon the ground.

Viewing the humble monk’s bloody body, so battered and mangled, the response of the crowd miraculous changed. The entire arena became eerily quiet and then the crowds began to slowly file out as the people recognized the horror of their actions.

After this, the Emperor suspended the gladiatorial games for three days in honor of Telemachus’ death, but history goes on to record that, because of his courageous act, within a few months they de-clined in popularity and ceased all together; simply because one man dared to speak out for what he believed was right. Thus, one man can make a difference. As Robert Kennedy once said, “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

CHURCH INFORMATION

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2In 1973, he was ordained to the diaconate and subsequently to the priesthood by Bishop

Theodosius of Pittsburgh [later Metropolitan Theodosius]. He was assigned to the parish in Black Lick, where he also served as spiritual director for the Orthodox Christian Fellowship at nearby Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

As a celibate priest, he maintained a zeal for the monastic life in all his endeavors. In 1975 he was made a riasaphor monk, and later was tonsured a monk in the in the Lesser Schema by [then] Bishop Herman in August of 1982. In November of that year he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite.

Recognizing his zeal and spirit of dedication to Church service, the Diocese of New England nominated Hieromonk Job as their diocesan bishop. The Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America ratified the nomination and elected him Bishop of Hartford and the Diocese of New England. He was consecrated to the episcopacy on January 29, 1983, at All Saints Church in Hartford, CT.

At its session of November 5, 1992, the Holy Synod of Bishops elected Bishop Job to the See of Chicago and the Diocese of the Midwest, which had been vacant since the retirement of Bishop Boris in 1988. He was enthroned as Bishop of his native city at Holy Trinity Cathedral on February 6, 1993.

In his years in the See of Chicago, the Diocese of the Midwest experienced tremendous growth. This was witnessed in—but certainly not limited to—the establishment of numerous new mission parishes in the diocese.

In addition to his ministry as the ruling hierarch of the Diocese of the Midwest, he enjoyed his long-standing and excellent reputation as an iconographer and iconologist. He was often called upon to offer lectures on this subject, and he was willing to assist and encourage other iconographers.

In recognition of his over two decades of “good and faithful” service as archpastor, at the March 2004 Session of the Holy Synod, Bishop Job was elevated to the rank of Archbishop.

Archbishop Job fell asleep in the Lord unexpectedly on Friday, December 18, 2009 en route from Cleveland to Chicago. He is interred on the grounds of Saint John the Baptist Church, Black Lick, PA.

May Archbishop Job’s memory be eternal!
