Good morning to all !! todays lesson follows on nicely from the previous one we did on fossil fuels !! Using a technique called fractional distillation we can make lots of useful products from one single fossil fuel ! Clever stuff !
Many products that we use on a day to day basis like jet fuel , petrol , diesel , paint , nail varnish , road tar ( bitumen ) are all made from crude oil that we extract from under the sea .
Lets have a look at how this process is done and lets try and answer the questions !!
Key questions:1- Where do we find crude oil ?2- Crude oil is a hydrocarbon , what two elements make up a hydrocarbon ( the clue is in the name )3- We call crude oil a “finite “ resource , what does finite mean ?4- What type of energy do we apply to crude oil to get it to separate into different products ?5- A product with a long carbon chain has a higher boiling point … True or false ?6- What C is the change of state from a gas to a liquid?7- Some products from crude oil have such a small carbon chain they stay as a gas .
